T-Mobile announced a $5 monthly increase for each affected voice line on selected older plans on March 13, 2025. The change began April 2, 2025, so it is now a past billing event—not an upcoming increase. Some legacy Simple Choice, ONE, Magenta and Sprint-derived plans were included, but not every former Sprint customer was affected.
What T-Mobile changed
The reported change applied to selected legacy plans and added $5 per affected voice line each month. T-Mobile described it as a continuation or completion of earlier legacy-plan adjustments rather than a wholly new pricing policy. The announcement and amount were reported by PhoneArena.
A higher bill is not automatically this price increase. Check whether the recurring rate-plan charge changed, rather than assuming the cause was a device installment, insurance, streaming service, international pass, tax, government fee, late fee or one-time charge.
Why former Sprint customers were watching
The Sprint-T-Mobile merger closed April 1, 2020, and the increase started April 2, 2025. That timing led industry reports to connect the change with the expiration of certain five-year protections. The timing supports that interpretation, but it does not prove that every affected account was governed by the same five-year restriction.

- "Triple-cut" SIM Card can be punched out for the desired size. Universal, 3-in-1 SIM.
- GSM Technology. Compatible with 3G, 4G and 4G LTE devices.
- Compatible with postpaid cellular service.
- No annual contract.
- SIM card only.
T-Mobile’s public merger FAQ says the company committed to provide the same or better rate plans, including 5G access, for at least three years. That statement is not a plan-by-plan legal analysis and is not proof that every Sprint customer received a nationwide five-year price freeze. State attorneys-general settlements, federal merger conditions, marketing promises and individual plan documents can impose different obligations. See the T-Mobile merger updates page and the Department of Justice merger materials.
Which former Sprint accounts should be checked
- Accounts still using legacy Sprint billing arrangements.
- Accounts migrated to T-Mobile billing.
- Accounts labeled Magenta Complete or another Sprint-derived plan.
- Legacy Simple Choice, ONE or Magenta plans.
- Customers who voluntarily changed plans after the merger.
- Customers who received a written price-change notice.
A Sprint-derived or Magenta Complete label alone does not establish which protection applied. Compare the current plan name, plan or SOC code if shown, original enrollment or migration date, and the written notice. Magenta Complete background and an April 2, 2025 pricing note are described at Sprint SWAC.

How much could the increase add?
| Affected voice lines | Nominal monthly increase | Annualized increase |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | $5 | $60 |
| 4 | $20 | $240 |
| 5 | $25 | $300 |
These are illustrations of the reported $5-per-line change, before taxes or other billing changes. The figure should not be applied automatically to every T-Mobile customer, every Sprint-derived account, tablets, watches, home-internet lines or data-only lines.
How to verify whether your bill changed
- Compare a bill from before April 2025 with one issued after April 2, 2025.
- Look for a line-level change in the recurring rate-plan charge.
- Open your current bill and account cost details to confirm the plan name and line charges.
- Search March 2025 texts, emails and mailed notices for the effective date and affected lines.
- Separate the base plan from device payments, insurance, third-party services, taxes, fees, passes, discounts and one-time charges.
- Ask T-Mobile support for the exact reason and effective date of any increase.
- Save bills, notices and screenshots before changing the account.
What Price Lock and the Un-contract Promise cover
T-Mobile’s Price Lock FAQ describes several generations of protection, including a 5-Year Guarantee, Last Month Price Lock, Original Price Lock and the Un-contract Promise. Eligibility depends on the account’s activation or switch date and plan terms, not simply on being a long-time customer.

For qualifying versions, T-Mobile says that if it raises the price and the customer leaves, it may cover the final month’s recurring service charges when the customer gives notice within 60 days. This is not an indefinite freeze and is not a promise to pay every amount on the final bill. Taxes and fees, device charges, some discounts, per-use charges, add-ons, third-party services and satellite connectivity are among the stated exclusions. Review the legal terms for the version applicable to your account.
What happens if you leave T-Mobile
T-Mobile’s cancellation guidance says service cancellations are generally future-dated and typically take effect at the end of the current billing cycle. Porting a number to another carrier does not necessarily stop billing immediately.

- Remaining device installments may continue or become due.
- Promotional bill credits, free-line offers and trade-in credits may end.
- The final bill can contain cycle-end, prorated or unrelated charges.
- A Price Lock benefit, where applicable, concerns qualifying recurring service charges—not automatically equipment or taxes.
- Request written confirmation of any promised final-bill credit.
Stay, change T-Mobile plans or switch carriers?
Compare the complete after-discount cost rather than an advertised base rate.
| Option | Potential benefit | Important risk |
|---|---|---|
| Stay on the legacy plan | No porting, account migration or immediate loss of existing features. | The increase compounds across lines and future legacy-plan changes remain possible. |
| Move to a newer T-Mobile plan | Potentially better hotspot, international service, streaming benefits, device promotions or a newer price guarantee. | The after-discount total can be higher, and old perks or credits may change. |
| Switch carriers | A prepaid or MVNO plan may reduce the base bill or provide a useful switcher promotion. | Coverage, network priority, roaming, device financing, free lines and promotional credits may be worse or lost. |
Before switching, test coverage at home, work and regular travel locations; compare hotspot, premium-data, international and roaming needs; and include autopay requirements, taxes and fees. Official options include Mint Mobile, Visible, US Mobile, Google Fi Wireless, AT&T Prepaid and Verizon Prepaid. Their terms and current prices vary, so no alternative is universally cheaper.

Some customers discussed legal action after the increase, but the change should not be labeled illegal without analyzing the customer’s contract, plan terms, marketing representations and applicable state or federal requirements. Preserve notices and bills, ask T-Mobile to explain the charge, and consider an FCC complaint as an escalation route. A complaint is not a guarantee of reimbursement or a successful legal claim. This is general information, not individualized legal advice.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every former Sprint customer was affected.
- Confusing $5 per affected line with $5 per account.
- Treating an anonymous employee report or leaked list as an official plan roster.
- Calling Price Lock a permanent price freeze without checking its version.
- Assuming T-Mobile will pay device balances when the stated benefit concerns recurring service charges.
- Porting out before checking device obligations, credits and the final bill.
- Using a 2025 report as evidence of a separate 2026 increase or forced migration.
The Bottom Line
Former Sprint customers should inspect the bill issued after April 2, 2025, identify the exact recurring-charge change, and verify their plan-specific merger or Price Lock protection before switching or accepting a new plan.
