AI can make tax preparation faster, but it should be treated as an assistant—not an autonomous tax preparer. For U.S. federal individual returns filed in the 2026 season (tax year 2025), use AI to organize records, explain terms, find the right forms and prepare questions. Use official IRS instructions or validated tax software to establish the filing result, and use a credentialed professional for ambiguous, high-value or complex issues.
This guide covers personal-tax chatbots and AI features in tax software. Tax policy for AI businesses, software deductions and potential “AI taxes” is a separate subject. State and local taxes, entities, trusts, estates, international tax and other countries require separate analysis.
What “AI and taxes” means
The phrase covers several different tools with different responsibilities:
- General-purpose chatbots: explain concepts and help organize questions, but can produce outdated or invented tax law.
- AI inside tax software: guides interviews, imports documents, checks for omissions and may connect you with an expert.
- Document automation: extracts data from forms or transactions; every imported number still needs comparison with the original.
- Tax professionals: apply judgment, resolve disputed facts, plan across years and represent clients.
The IRS says AI-supported processes do not replace human judgment in decisions affecting taxpayer rights or obligations (IRS privacy policy). Commercial “AI-powered” labels are not IRS endorsements.

What AI can safely do
| Use | How to use it safely |
|---|---|
| Document checklist | Ask for categories such as wages, interest, dividends, brokerage activity, retirement distributions, mortgage interest, gifts and business expenses. |
| Plain-English explanations | Have it explain AGI, basis, withholding, capital gains, depreciation or self-employment tax using synthetic examples. |
| Organization | Turn a transaction list into spreadsheet columns for date, proceeds, basis, fees and missing records; review each entry yourself. |
| Form navigation | Ask which IRS form or software interview topic may apply, then open the current instructions. |
| Planning your questions | Generate a list for a CPA or enrolled agent and identify facts you have not yet gathered. |
| Recordkeeping | Create a post-filing checklist for receipts, source documents, calculations and payment confirmations. |
These are low-risk assistance tasks. They do not establish that you qualify for a credit, deduction or election.
Where AI is unreliable
- It may use the wrong tax year, confuse marginal and effective rates, or apply federal rules to a state return.
- It can omit filing-status rules, phaseouts, limits, elections, carryovers, basis adjustments or required schedules when facts are incomplete.
- Complex areas—including digital assets, options and restricted stock, rentals, home offices, multi-state income, foreign accounts, amended returns and entity elections—require current authority and often professional judgment.
- A mathematically correct calculation can still be legally wrong if the eligibility assumption is wrong.
For 2025 returns, digital-asset activity may require reporting even if you did not receive Form 1099-DA; the obligation is not limited to people who receive that form (IRS 2026 filing updates).

- Recommended if you own a home, have charitable donations, high medical expenses and need to file both Federal & State Tax Returns

The Taxpayer Advocate Service reported that an informal review found leading tax chatbots gave inaccurate or irrelevant answers on a substantial share of complex questions. That is an informal review, not a universal accuracy rate (Taxpayer Advocate Service).
Protect tax data before using a chatbot
Never paste these into a public AI service
- Social Security numbers, ITINs, driver’s-license or passport numbers
- Bank and routing numbers, IRS credentials, Identity Protection PINs, passwords or authentication codes
- Unredacted W-2s, 1099s, brokerage statements, K-1s, tax returns or another person’s client information
- Exact addresses combined with financial information, or unredacted medical, legal, immigration or employment records
IRS internal guidance says sensitive information should be shared only with authorized tools (IRS AI privacy guidance). For consumers, treat a chatbot as another party receiving your data.

- Premium: Windows 10 or higher and Business: Windows 11
- Tax prep made smarter: With AI Tax Assist, you can get real-time expert answers from start to finish.
- Quickly import your W-2, 1099, 1098, and last year's personal tax return, even from TurboTax and Quicken software
- Five free federal e-files and unlimited federal preparation and printing
- Free e-file included for most business forms
A safer redaction workflow
- Work from a copy, never the only original.
- Remove names, addresses, identification numbers, barcodes, QR codes, employer IDs and document-control numbers.
- Replace values with labels such as
[W-2 wages]or[federal withholding]; use rounded or synthetic amounts for explanations. - Read the provider’s retention, training, human-review, third-party-processing, deletion and security terms. Turning off model training does not necessarily eliminate storage, backups or legal disclosures.
- Delete the conversation when appropriate, then monitor accounts. If credentials were exposed, change them and consider an IRS Identity Protection PIN.
A prompt that keeps tax research bounded
I am asking for general U.S. federal tax research for tax year 2025, not a final filing decision. Do not guess. Identify the relevant IRS form, publication, regulation, or statute, state assumptions, and list facts that could change the answer. Scenario: - Filing status: [category] - State: [state] - Income type: [general category] - Relevant dates: [dates] - Amounts: rounded or synthetic figures only Question: [plain-language question] Output: 1. General rule 2. Exceptions 3. Relevant form or IRS source 4. Facts to verify 5. Questions for a tax professional
Open every cited source yourself. AI citations can be wrong, incomplete or irrelevant.
How to verify an AI answer
- Confirm it is for tax year 2025 and identify whether it is federal, state or local.
- Identify the relevant IRS form and open its current instructions.
- Check the applicable IRS topic, publication or official FAQ for thresholds, phaseouts, limits, deadlines and exceptions.
- Confirm filing-status and residency requirements, then check state conformity separately.
- Recalculate in validated tax software or a spreadsheet and compare populated forms with your source documents.
- Save the source and reasoning with your records.
- Ask a credentialed professional when the amount is material, the facts are disputed or the decision affects multiple years.
Can AI file your taxes?
Some products use AI for data entry, explanations and error checks, but the tax product—not a chatbot—transmits the return. You remain responsible for the information and elections submitted. The IRS says taxpayers remain responsible for accuracy even when another person prepares the return; paid preparers generally sign and include a PTIN (IRS Topic 254).

Ask what “expert” means: chatbot, customer-service agent, enrolled agent or CPA, completed-return review, full preparation, audit support or IRS representation. Those are different services.
