The Richest Native American Tribes in 2024: What the Data Actually Shows

There is no reliable all-tribe 2024 net-worth ranking. Here is what official gaming data and documented Chickasaw and Choctaw figures can—and cannot—tell you.

There is no authoritative 2024 ranking of Native American tribes by net worth. Tribal governments generally do not publish standardized, comparable balance sheets, and the figures that are available measure different things. The strongest nationwide measure is the $43.9 billion in fiscal-year 2024 gross gaming revenue reported by the National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC), but that is an industry total—not the wealth of one tribe or the amount paid to individual citizens.

A useful comparison therefore labels each figure as gross gaming revenue, enterprise revenue, regional economic impact, assets or member payments, and states its year, geography and level of verification.

Why “richest” is not a single, measurable answer

“Net worth” would normally mean assets minus liabilities. For tribes, however, publicly available information is uneven: one government may report business revenue, another may publish an economic-impact estimate, and another may disclose neither. Those measures cannot be placed in a valid league table without common accounting definitions and dates.

  • Gross gaming revenue (GGR) is the amount wagered minus winnings returned to players. It is before operating costs, debt service, taxes and reinvestment.
  • Enterprise or governmental revenue can combine many businesses and public entities and may not equal profit or cash available for distribution.
  • Regional economic impact estimates activity generated across a surrounding economy; it is not tribal net worth or audited revenue.
  • Assets require a balance sheet and consistent valuation rules, which are not available in a comparable all-tribe 2024 dataset.
  • Per-capita payments depend on an approved allocation plan, eligible population and the funds a tribe elects to distribute.

Accordingly, calling a tribe “the richest” without naming the metric and source year would overstate what the evidence establishes.

The nationwide 2024 gaming figure

The NIGC reported $43.9 billion in FY2024 gross gaming revenue from 532 independently audited gaming operations owned by 243 federally recognized tribes across 29 states. The total was 4.6% higher than FY2023. NIGC defines GGR as wagers minus winnings returned to players, so it should not be read as tribal profit, net assets or member income.

“These revenue numbers demonstrate the positive impacts of tribal gaming and the essential role it plays supporting tribal sovereignty, job growth, infrastructure, education, and important social, health, and welfare programs in tribal communities,” NIGC Vice Chair Jeannie Hovland said in the agency’s 2025 release.

The figure establishes the scale of tribal gaming as a sector. It does not identify which tribe has the largest balance sheet, nor does it show how much any one citizen receives.

Documented examples of large tribal economic activity

The following examples are useful because they disclose substantial activity, but their metrics and years differ. The reported figures come from secondary reference material rather than a standardized 2024 ranking.

Chickasaw Nation

A published reference estimates the Chickasaw Nation’s annual regional economic impact at more than $3.18 billion. That is an impact estimate for the surrounding region, not an audited statement of tribal net worth or annual profit.

The reported portfolio includes WinStar World Casino, other casinos, Lone Star Park, Remington Park Casino, the Chickasaw Cultural Center, hotels, museums and Chickasaw Community Bank. The breadth of those holdings helps explain why a regional-impact figure can be large, but it still cannot be compared directly with another tribe’s gaming revenue or assets.

Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma

Another reference reports more than $2.51 billion in 2022 economic impact and expected FY2023 revenues of $2.45 billion from tribal businesses and governmental entities. It also reports approximately 12,000 employees.

The listed activities span casinos, smoke shops, truck stops, restaurants, health care, manufacturing, document services and management services. The $2.51 billion is an impact measure, while $2.45 billion was an expectation for FY2023 revenue; neither is a direct 2024 net-worth ranking.

What the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act allows revenue to fund

The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) permits net gaming revenue to support tribal government operations and programs, member general welfare, economic development, charitable organizations and local-government operations. A tribe may also make per-capita distributions under an approved Revenue Allocation Plan.

Those choices mean that revenue can remain in public services or businesses rather than appear as a cash payment. IRS guidance says per-capita payments made under these plans are generally taxable to recipients. A payment amount therefore cannot be used by itself to rank a tribe’s wealth.

“Under the IGRA, tribe-owned casino revenue must support tribal economic development and welfare, including local charities and, in some cases, sharing it with state and local governments,” the U.S. Census Bureau explains.

What the Census data says about economic outcomes

The U.S. Census Bureau reported a 19.6% American Indian and Alaska Native poverty rate in 2024, compared with 12.1% for the United States. The same 2025 Census article notes that tribal gaming generated more than $40 billion annually and summarizes research associating casino ownership with improved reservation economic outcomes.

In the first two decades after IGRA, real per-capita income on reservation lands rose 46.5%, compared with 7.8% in the United States. The cited research also found about an 11% decrease in childhood poverty, roughly a 7% increase in AIAN women’s labor-force participation and a 4% reduction in overall unemployment over that period.

These are population-level outcomes, not proof that every tribe or household benefited equally. They also measure economic change rather than tribal net worth.

How to evaluate claims about the “wealthiest” tribe

  1. Name the metric. Ask whether the claim concerns GGR, net revenue, total enterprise revenue, assets, regional impact or per-capita payments.
  2. Check the year and geography. A 2022 regional estimate, an expected FY2023 revenue figure and FY2024 gaming data are not interchangeable.
  3. Check verification. Distinguish independently audited operations from estimates, forecasts and secondary summaries.
  4. Separate the tribal government from its citizens. Business income may fund health care, education, infrastructure and administration instead of direct distributions.
  5. Read allocation rules before comparing payments. Eligibility, population size and an approved Revenue Allocation Plan determine who receives money and how much.

Using those checks, the defensible 2024 answer is metric-specific: tribal gaming was a $43.9 billion industry, while available Chickasaw and Choctaw figures document large economic footprints without proving either tribe has the highest net worth.
