Meta and News Corp confirmed a multiyear agreement in March 2026 to bring News Corp journalism into Meta AI’s news-related answers and link users to publisher websites. Outside reporting puts the deal at up to $50 million per year for three years—an implied maximum of roughly $150 million—but neither company has publicly confirmed that figure, a guaranteed minimum, or the contract’s detailed technical rights.
What Meta and News Corp actually announced
Meta’s March 13, 2026 announcement lists News Corp alongside Le Figaro, Prisa and Süddeutsche Zeitung in a broader effort to add real-time news and other content to Meta AI. Meta says the service can use partner content in answers and provide links to the publishers’ websites.
The announcement confirms the commercial partnership, but it does not publish a price, term, contract, or description of the arrangement as a model-training license. Meta’s stated goals are to make answers more timely, relevant, accurate and balanced; those are product objectives, not independently verified results. Meta’s announcement.
Confirmed facts versus reported terms
| Point | What is established |
|---|---|
| Partnership | Meta and News Corp have a multiyear AI-content agreement, confirmed by the companies and reporting. |
| Product use | Meta AI can use partner news in answers and link to publisher websites, according to Meta. |
| Annual payment | Reportedly up to $50 million a year, according to Wall Street Journal reporting summarized by Engadget; not publicly confirmed by either company. Engadget. |
| Term | Reportedly three years, according to coverage by TheWrap; the companies have not published the term. TheWrap. |
| Implied maximum | About $150 million, calculated from the reported $50 million annual ceiling multiplied by three years. It is not proof that Meta will pay that amount. |
What the reported price does—and does not—mean
“Up to $50 million per year” could reflect a ceiling, milestones, usage, or other conditions. The public record does not establish a guaranteed annual payment, minimum commitment, payment schedule, renewal or termination terms, or the amount ultimately payable. Saying that Meta “paid $150 million” would therefore overstate the evidence.

What content is likely covered
Reporting describes rights involving News Corp’s United States and United Kingdom content, including The Wall Street Journal and other News Corp brands. News Corp also owns titles such as the New York Post, but public information does not show that every publication, archive, image, video, subscriber-only article or local edition is included on identical terms.
Corporate ownership is not the same as the rights granted by this contract. The deal may cover selected brands, formats, territories and uses rather than every item News Corp controls.
Training, retrieval or both?
Public descriptions are not fully aligned. Meta emphasizes real-time retrieval, generated answers and links. Engadget and TheWrap report that News Corp content can also support chatbot responses and AI-model training. The companies have not released a technical rights schedule.
That leaves the division among training, fine-tuning, retrieval augmentation, indexing, storage, display and attribution unresolved. It is safest to say that public reporting describes both answer-generation and model-related use, while Meta’s own statement specifically highlights current news access and source links.

Where users will encounter the content
This is a content-supply arrangement for Meta AI experiences across Meta’s apps and devices, not a standalone News Corp product inside Facebook or Instagram. A user asking a news question may receive a generated answer informed by partner reporting and links to an original publisher page.
A license does not mean Meta AI will reproduce complete articles. Paywalls and subscription requirements can still apply, and the final experience depends on Meta’s citation, excerpt, ranking and attribution choices. Meta’s broader publisher description is available here.
Why Meta is licensing journalism
- Current reporting gives an AI assistant a source of information that changes faster than a static training corpus.
- Professional publishers can broaden coverage and provide identifiable source links.
- Negotiated permissions reduce legal and commercial uncertainty compared with using copyrighted journalism without authorization.
- Publisher agreements help Meta compete with other assistants and search products pursuing similar arrangements.
Reuters reported that Meta’s earlier publisher agreements also focused on real-time information and links, while terms for several deals were undisclosed. Reuters coverage via Investing.com.
Why News Corp agreed
The arrangement creates a direct licensing stream and gives News Corp a commercial precedent when negotiating with other AI companies. It may also help readers discover publisher pages through Meta AI, although no public source establishes how much referral traffic the deal will generate.

News Corp’s 2024 OpenAI partnership was widely reported as a five-year agreement worth more than $250 million over its term. That is useful context, not an apples-to-apples price comparison.
The two contracts may differ in covered brands, exclusivity, training permissions, display rights, territories, renewal options and payment structure. Nothing publicly establishes that Meta received the same rights as OpenAI.

What the deal could mean for publishers
Potential advantages
- New licensing revenue from current reporting and archives.
- More leverage when negotiating with technology companies.
- Possible audience discovery through links in AI answers.
- A framework for specifying permitted uses rather than accepting unbounded scraping.
Risks and trade-offs
- An answer may satisfy a user without producing a visit to the source article.
- Large publishers may capture deals that smaller outlets cannot negotiate.
- Publishers could become dependent on a small number of platforms.
- Generated summaries can omit context or misstate reporting even when the underlying content is licensed.
- The long-term value of training rights is difficult to price, and confidential terms limit outside comparison.
What it means for Meta AI users
- News answers may draw on more current U.S., U.K. and international reporting.
- Users may get links to original articles instead of an answer with no identifiable source.
- A licensed source does not guarantee that a generated answer is correct, complete or neutral.
- Users may see a summary rather than full text, and a linked article may remain paywalled.
- The deal does not establish how Meta handles attribution, corrections, removals or disagreements over an answer.
Questions the public record still cannot answer
- What minimum payment, if any, is guaranteed?
- Which specific brands, formats, archives and territories are included?
- Are training rights exclusive, nonexclusive or limited to particular models?
- How long may Meta retain and update licensed material?
- What attribution, correction and takedown procedures apply?
- Does News Corp receive engagement or referral data?
Bottom line
This is a genuine, significant commercial licensing agreement, but its headline value needs careful handling. The best-supported description is a reported ceiling of up to $50 million annually over a reported three-year term—not a confirmed $150 million payment. Its wider importance is the normalization of negotiated access to professional journalism for AI systems, while the contract’s exact content scope and technical permissions remain private.
