What happened to Lenovo and Motorola’s German sales ban? The InterDigital patent dispute explained

The German court order against Lenovo and Motorola was real but limited to certain cellular-enabled products. The licensing dispute later moved to binding arbitration, and a permanent blanket ban is not established by the latest cited filings.

Short answer: A German court did impose an enforceable injunction in May 2024 against Lenovo products that infringed an InterDigital cellular patent. The order affected certain 4G/5G-enabled devices, including Motorola smartphones and Lenovo hardware with WWAN (mobile-network) modules—not every Lenovo or Motorola product. Lenovo appealed, and the parties later moved the licensing dispute into binding arbitration. The latest cited filing does not establish a final arbitration award or the exact current German availability of each model.

What the Munich court ordered in May 2024

On May 2, 2024, the Munich Regional Court (often called the Munich I Regional Court) ruled for InterDigital in a case involving a European patent related to cellular standards. InterDigital said the court found Lenovo infringed and ordered it to stop selling infringing products in Germany. The company published its account of the decision in an update on the dispute.

The order was enforceable after InterDigital served an enforcement note. Contemporaneous reporting put the required security deposit at €4 million; that figure comes from secondary coverage rather than the published court judgment. Lenovo appealed and asked the Munich court to suspend enforcement. The court rejected that stay request in June 2024, according to InterDigital’s later annual-report filings.

This was a German injunction concerning products within the asserted patent’s scope. It was not a Europe-wide order and did not establish that every device sold under either brand infringed.

Was there a blanket Lenovo and Motorola ban?

No. The reported restriction was tied to products containing relevant WWAN (Wireless Wide Area Network) cellular technology. WWAN modules provide mobile-network connections such as LTE/4G and 5G; contemporaneous reports also described the dispute in terms of GSM and UMTS technology.

Product category How the reports described the impact
Motorola smartphones Cellular models were among the products affected; reports specifically identified the Edge 50 family.
Lenovo laptops Configurations fitted with LTE/5G or other WWAN modules were the relevant category.
Lenovo tablets and other mobile-connected devices Some reports referred broadly to cellular-enabled tablets and related products, but an exhaustive model list is not established by the cited sources.
Wi-Fi-only computers and tablets These do not contain the disputed cellular module and were not described as covered by the injunction.
Accessories Android Central reported that accessories such as chargers and earbuds were not affected.

A model name alone may not answer the question. The same product family can have Wi-Fi-only and LTE/5G configurations, so buyers need to check for a SIM slot, eSIM support or a listed WWAN modem.

Why InterDigital and Lenovo went to court

The patent and FRAND issue

InterDigital develops wireless technologies and licenses a large patent portfolio. Its 2025 Form 10-K reported more than 38,000 patents and patent applications as of December 31, 2025. The company alleged that Lenovo used patented cellular technology without agreeing to appropriate licensing terms.

Many patents connected to technical standards are treated as standard-essential patents (SEPs): a manufacturer implementing the standard may need access to them to make a compliant product. A patent holder that has made a licensing commitment is generally expected to offer terms that are FRAND—fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory.

FRAND does not mean royalty-free. The disagreement can involve the royalty level, which products and sales are covered, treatment of past sales, and how a worldwide license should be structured.

InterDigital’s position

InterDigital said it met its FRAND obligations and characterized Lenovo as an “unwilling licensee.” Its account of the German ruling is available in the company’s statement. The cited materials do not publish a final royalty rate that the court set for this dispute.

Lenovo’s position

Lenovo said it respected the court but disagreed with the decision and intended to appeal. In comments reported by the South China Morning Post, Lenovo argued that InterDigital’s demands were not FRAND, including in relation to Lenovo’s third-party suppliers. Lenovo also said access to standardized technology on fair terms supports innovation, affordability and consumer choice. Those are Lenovo’s arguments, not findings established here as fact.

What German shoppers saw

Contemporaneous reports said Lenovo and Motorola removed affected products from their German websites, while some independent retailers continued selling inventory already in their warehouses. That created an important distinction: a retailer could sell existing stock for a time even if the manufacturer could not lawfully replenish it.

Timeline: from injunction to arbitration

Date Verified development
September 2023 InterDigital filed the German patent complaint against Lenovo and affiliates, according to its annual-report litigation section.
May 2, 2024 The Munich Regional Court issued the first-instance ruling described by InterDigital as finding infringement of the asserted cellular patent.
May 2024 InterDigital served an enforcement note; reports said a €4 million security deposit enabled enforcement.
June 2024 The Munich court rejected Lenovo’s request to stay enforcement during the appeal.
Fourth quarter 2024 The parties agreed to binding arbitration over new cellular and other technology patent-license terms, effective from January 1, 2024. InterDigital filed its arbitration request in November.
March 2025 InterDigital said the full arbitration tribunal had been confirmed and expected a hearing before the end of 2025.
Latest cited 2026 filing InterDigital described the arbitration as an open matter and said the related litigation had been dismissed by the fourth quarter of 2024.

The later arbitration changes how the dispute should be described today. It is accurate to call the May 2024 injunction a real historical event; it is not supported by the cited evidence to call a blanket, permanent 2026 sales ban still newly in force. Nor do the cited filings verify a final arbitration award, a settlement, formal vacation of the injunction or the exact status of every German product listing.

What this means for buyers and procurement teams

Consumers who need mobile connectivity

If independent cellular access is essential, confirm that the exact SKU has LTE/5G support and is authorized for German sale. A Wi-Fi-only laptop or tablet can avoid this particular WWAN issue, but it requires Wi-Fi, tethering or a separate hotspot.

Businesses buying fleets

  • Obtain written confirmation of German distribution rights for cellular configurations.
  • Ask who licenses the modem technology and whether the vendor offers indemnification.
  • Separate a product-level injunction from a brand-wide prohibition.
  • Plan replacement stock, warranty handling and a Wi-Fi-only or hotspot fallback.

The case also illustrates why standard-essential-patent disputes matter beyond courtrooms: a device can be technically compliant with a cellular standard yet face sales restrictions while licensing terms are contested.

Bottom line

Lenovo and Motorola did face a genuine German patent injunction in May 2024, but it targeted infringing cellular-enabled configurations rather than all products. Lenovo appealed, enforcement was not stayed, and the parties later shifted their licensing fight into binding arbitration. The latest cited evidence records ongoing arbitration and dismissed litigation, not a verified final settlement or a newly imposed blanket ban in 2026. Check the exact German SKU and seller status before buying a cellular Lenovo or Motorola device.
