ERC-8004 makes AI-agent identity, feedback and validation signals legible to software, but it does not make those signals truthful or make them collateral. The standard could help marketplaces price services, route tasks and set credit terms—if applications add evidence, reviewer-quality controls, payment records and real enforcement.
Why agent reputation matters
An agent can discover another agent through protocols such as MCP or A2A, authenticate it and exchange task messages. That still leaves the commercial question: will the counterparty deliver?
ERC-8004 is designed for the gap between communication and settlement. Communication protocols make an agent reachable; ERC-8004 makes identity and trust signals queryable; a separate payment rail settles the transaction. Payments are explicitly outside ERC-8004’s scope, according to the official EIP.
That separation matters for anyone evaluating financial exposure. A score can inform a decision, but it cannot reimburse a loss. The useful question is therefore not whether a high score means an agent is safe, but whether the surrounding system makes the score hard enough to fake and meaningful enough to use.

What “reputation as an economic primitive” means
A primitive is a basic input that other systems can reuse. In an ERC-8004 ecosystem, reputation is intended to be machine-readable, publicly queryable, portable between applications and composable with marketplaces or smart contracts.
It is not necessarily one universal number. The design supports task-specific feedback, tags, reviewer identities, numerical scales, links to evidence and validation results. A code-review service might expose separate measures for correctness, security and turnaround. A trading agent might be assessed on return, drawdown and execution quality.
That information could affect several economic decisions:
- Pricing: a credible record may support higher fees or better assignments.
- Discovery: buyers and agents can reduce the time and uncertainty involved in selecting a provider.
- Credit and collateral: a lender or marketplace may use past performance when setting limits, escrow requirements or payment timing.
- Routing: software can select providers by task category, validation status, price and risk tolerance.
- Insurance and bonding: underwriters may use evidence of performance when pricing risk, subject to enforceable claims and reserves.
These are possible design outcomes, not established market premiums. Reputation is information about expected performance; collateral, escrow, insurance and legal remedies absorb losses.
ERC-8004’s three registries
Identity Registry: who is the agent?
The Identity Registry uses an ERC-721-based identifier. An agentId points to a registration URI (often called an agentURI or token URI) containing structured metadata about the agent, its capabilities, prices and interaction methods. That file can list service endpoints such as A2A or MCP interfaces.
The EIP describes the identity as portable, browsable and transferable. Portability helps an agent be recognized across applications, but transferability creates an important risk: ownership of the identity token may change without proving that the same operator, software version or infrastructure remains in control. Production systems should record wallet binding, operator changes, endpoint changes and agent versions rather than treating an NFT as proof of continuity.
Reputation Registry: what do counterparties report?
Feedback uses a signed fixed-point value: an int128 numerical value paired with a uint8 decimal precision from 0 through 18. Records can include tags, a feedback endpoint or URI, optional off-chain JSON, a hash commitment and the client address associated with the feedback.

The standard does not mandate a universal aggregation formula. Scores may be computed on-chain for transparency and composability or off-chain for more complex filtering and statistical analysis. Flexibility allows domain-specific evaluation, but it also means two scores may not be comparable. A 90 out of 100 in one marketplace can represent a different task, reviewer population and error tolerance from a 90 elsewhere.

Aggregators should expose raw records, disagreements, exclusions and confidence rather than compressing every dimension into a single headline number.
Validation Registry: what has been independently checked?
An agent can request validation and a validator can record a response. Possible methods include re-execution, stake-secured checking, zero-knowledge machine-learning proofs, trusted-execution-environment attestations or trusted judges. ERC-8004 supplies interfaces and hooks; it does not require one validator technology or guarantee that a validator is independent.
The EIP proposes security proportional to value at risk. A low-value, reversible task may need only basic reputation. A high-value or irreversible task may require independent validation, staking, cryptographic evidence or a trusted execution environment.
Where economic value could come from
Lower search costs
A marketplace can filter by capability, task category, reviewer set, validation status, endpoint health, price and availability. The direct benefit is reduced procurement time and uncertainty, not an abstract badge of trust.
Differentiated prices and automated procurement
If records are credible, an agent with demonstrated performance may win more valuable work, need less human supervision or charge more. Another agent could automatically choose a provider by combining capability, category-specific feedback, validation, settlement history, current price and a maximum acceptable loss.
Collateral, escrow and credit terms
A marketplace might use history to set collateral, escrow duration, credit limits or pay-before-delivery rules. That treats reputation as a risk input. It does not turn the record into a fund that compensates a buyer after failure.

Insurance and bonding
Insurers or bond providers would need defined claims, evidence standards, dispute procedures, capital reserves and reliable attribution of failure. ERC-8004 leaves validator economics and enforcement to implementations, so those protections must be built around the registries.
What the protocol does not solve
| Mechanism | Main function |
|---|---|
| Reputation | Information about reported historical behavior |
| Validation | Evidence about a particular output or capability |
| Collateral | A loss-absorption resource |
| Escrow | Conditional control of payment |
| Insurance | Transfer of defined risks to a capitalized provider |
| Slashing | An economic penalty for specified misconduct |
| Payment history | Evidence that a commercial interaction actually occurred |
On-chain storage proves that a record was submitted and preserves its integrity; it does not prove that the underlying claim was honest. A feedback entry does not automatically prove delivery or payment. Those links require separate receipts, artifacts, contracts or validation.

Technical lifecycle and payment separation
- Register an identity and attach a registration file.
- Publish capabilities, versions and service endpoints.
- Discover a counterparty and inspect category-specific reputation and validation.
- Agree on price, deliverables, risk controls and dispute terms.
- Execute the task.
- Settle through a separate payment rail.
- Record feedback and, where appropriate, an independent validation result.
- Aggregate the new evidence for later routing, pricing or credit decisions.
This is a conceptual architecture, not a mandatory ERC-8004 command sequence. x402 is one separate protocol that can provide programmatic, HTTP-native payments; its documentation describes wallet-based payment flows and approximately one-second settlement as project claims. ERC-8004 can be paired with x402, but it does not include it. A payment receipt may strengthen reputation evidence, yet no feedback record proves payment unless an application links the two.
Deployment references and contract addresses
The official contracts repository lists these registry addresses. Verify the chain and explorer before using them in production, because the same vanity addresses appear on more than one network.

The 2026 reality check: registered is not active
A June 2026 study of Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain and Base found a large gap between registrations and usable agents. Approximately 3%, 4% and 15% of registrations, respectively, exposed a valid registration file with at least one live service endpoint under the study’s methodology. The study also reported incomplete metadata and substantial batch-registration activity. Registration totals therefore cannot be used as active-agent or adoption counts. The study states January 29, 2026 as the mainnet deployment date it analyzed, not as a universal measure of ecosystem maturity. (study)
The same study found that feedback values were not necessarily commensurable, many records lacked verifiable interaction grounding and reviewer behavior showed substantial Sybil coordination. Sybil-flagged reviewers represented approximately 73.6% of reviewers on Ethereum, 59.2% on BNB Smart Chain and 90.6% on Base under that study’s detection method. After flagged feedback was removed, many rated agents had no valid feedback remaining.

It estimated that one feedback transaction could move a median agent across a nominal trust threshold for about $0.0027 on Base, $0.0042 on BNB Smart Chain and $0.055 on Ethereum during the observation period. These are study-specific estimates, not permanent network prices or measurements of every deployment.
The economic implication is straightforward: a signal is valuable only when fabricating it costs more than the advantage it unlocks, or when downstream systems reliably discount suspicious records. Otherwise fake history can capture premium pricing, distort credit limits, crowd out honest newcomers and cause serious buyers to ignore the registry.

| Failure mode | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Sybil attacks | Many cheap identities can submit mutually reinforcing feedback. |
| Collusion | Coordinated agents can trade reviews or validations while appearing independent at the address level. |
| Score inflation | Near-universal positive feedback may reflect weak standards rather than quality. |
| Reviewer selection | An aggregate can hide poor performance with a particular client or task class. |
| Identity transfer | The token can change hands without transferring the original operator, infrastructure or expertise. |
| Agent upgrades | A new model, prompt, tool set, operator or endpoint may not deserve the old history. |
| Endpoint hijacking | A registration file can continue pointing to an endpoint whose control or behavior changed. |
| Cross-chain fragmentation | One agent may have separate histories on Ethereum, Base, BNB Smart Chain and other networks. |
| Privacy leakage | Feedback can expose clients, timing, task categories, commercial relationships or sensitive artifacts. |
| Feedback extortion | A party may threaten a negative review unless paid or may retaliate after criticism. |
| Validator capture | A validator network can become unreliable if selection, incentives or conflicts are unmanaged. |
A practical trust ladder
| Transaction type | More suitable controls |
|---|---|
| Low-value, reversible task | Basic reputation, endpoint checks and a small trial. |
| Repeated operational task | Category-specific reputation, payment history, monitoring and periodic revalidation. |
| Medium-value task | Reputation plus escrow, defined acceptance tests and sample validation. |
| High-value or irreversible task | Independent validation, stake or bond, escrow, insurance and a dispute path. |
| Safety-critical task | Formal verification, cryptographic proof, trusted hardware or a regulated operator. |
This ladder follows the EIP’s value-at-risk principle. A score should influence controls only after the application establishes what was measured and what happens when the agent fails.

Implementation checklist for builders
- Version registration files and publish model, tool, operator and endpoint changes.
- Link feedback to payment receipts, task identifiers, deliverables and timestamps where privacy rules permit.
- Keep task-specific dimensions instead of forcing every outcome into one score.
- Rate reviewers by demonstrated expertise, economic exposure and independence.
- Publish sample sizes, weighting, time decay, confidence measures, exclusions and Sybil flags.
- Use delayed finality, disputes, escrow, staking, slashing or insurance where the loss warrants it.
- Define how reputation changes when an identity, wallet, operator, endpoint or agent version changes.
- Resolve identities across chains without assuming that a common interface creates a common score.
- Use selective disclosure or privacy-preserving evidence for sensitive commercial work.
- Monitor endpoint availability and registration-file integrity continuously.
How to judge an ERC-8004 reputation system
Provenance
Can a record be connected to a real client, task, payment, deliverable, timestamp, endpoint or cryptographically committed artifact?
Reviewer quality
Are reviewers long-lived, economically exposed, diverse and resistant to cheap identity creation? Can their conflicts and weighting be inspected?
Context and aggregation
Does the system preserve task type, difficulty, software version, service-level agreement, error tolerance and sample size? Can users inspect raw feedback, disagreements and filtering rules?
Validation and enforcement
Was the output merely self-reported, or was it re-executed, benchmarked, attested or checked by a staked validator? What financial or contractual consequence follows a failed claim?
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPortability
Can the history be interpreted across chains, marketplaces, versions and operators without silently treating unlike records as equivalent? ERC-8004 offers a common registry model, but semantic and cross-chain aggregation still require application design.
Bottom line for economic decision-makers
ERC-8004 is best understood as a public coordination layer for trust signals, not a finished reputation economy. It can make evidence easier for software to discover and combine, which may eventually reduce search costs and improve pricing, routing and risk decisions. Current data shows why registration counts and cheap feedback cannot be treated as proof of adoption or reliability. For meaningful financial exposure, pair the registry with provenance, reviewer analysis, validation, payment-linked evidence, escrow, staking, insurance or other recourse. Reputation can inform a risk decision; only an enforcement layer can absorb the loss.
