For most Android users, Zoho Invoice is the best genuinely free starting point. Square Invoices is stronger when getting paid online matters most, while Wave is the better fit if you also want bookkeeping. PayPal Invoicing is convenient for PayPal and Venmo customers, and Invoice Ninja is the standout for open-source or self-hosted setups.
This is a United States-focused guide for 2026. “Free” means no recurring software subscription—not free payment processing. The first seven apps have a permanent free-plan direction, but limits and Android availability can change. Stripe, QuickBooks Online, and FreshBooks are useful alternatives, yet they charge by usage or after a trial and are not free forever.

What “free” actually means
There are four different offers marketed as free:
- Free software plan: no recurring subscription, although features, clients or invoices may be capped.
- Free to send, paid to get paid: card, ACH, wallet, currency-conversion and dispute fees still apply.
- Free trial: access ends or billing starts unless you cancel.
- Free invoice generator: produces a PDF but may lack customer records, reminders, payment tracking and accounting.
Before installing, open the current Google Play listing and plan page. Check the Android version requirement, last update, whether essential features require a browser dashboard, and whether your country is supported.
The best genuinely free-plan choices
1. Zoho Invoice — best overall
Zoho’s official product page promotes free invoices, estimates, customization, logos, PDF delivery, reminders, online payments and Android access. Its Google Play description also lists time tracking, expenses, mileage and reports. Download or verify the current app at Google Play.
#1 Best Overall
- Two-Part Carbonless Invoice Book: Each invoice book has 50 sets of invoices, each with a white/light yellow section, with the yellow section retained in the invoice book to maintain detailed records.
- Consecutively Numbered: Enlarged red 6-digit numbers in the upper right corner of each invoice receipt book help you quickly navigate through your orders.
- Wraparound Divider Flap: A thick folded cardboard divider is integrated into the back of each invoice book for use between each two-part sales order to prevent the written content from rubbing off on subsequent copies of the invoice, resulting in wasted invoices.
- 2 Packs/50 Sets (100 Sets Total): Each invoice book provides 50 sequentially numbered carbonless sets of 2 invoice books for long-term use.
- Customizable Space: Each invoice book for small business has space at the top to add a company seal or sticker.
Choose it for a balanced workflow: create an estimate, convert it to an invoice, send it by email or SMS, remind the customer and record payment. A third-party comparison reports a five-client limit, but Zoho’s current U.S. terms should control your decision. It is not a replacement for payroll, inventory or full double-entry accounting.
2. Square Invoices — best for payment acceptance
Square’s U.S. Free plan is listed at $0 per month and includes unlimited invoices, estimates, contracts, users and customers, plus project tracking and payment-link sharing. The Android app supports invoice and estimate creation, reminders, status tracking and payment acceptance; see the Google Play listing.
Software is free, but processing is not. Advanced features such as milestone schedules, custom templates, custom fields and batch invoices may require Plus. Square’s current U.S. details are at its pricing page. Country availability and rates differ.

7. Invoicely — lightweight option to verify
Invoicely is listed in current comparison coverage as having a free tier. Before choosing it, confirm that a maintained Android app exists in your country and check invoice, client, branding, recurring-invoice, payment and export limits at Invoicely. Do not treat a web-only product as a full Android app.

Stripe Invoicing — paid as you go
Stripe is powerful for APIs, automation, subscriptions and international payment methods, but its Invoicing Starter price is 0.4% per paid invoice, in addition to payment-processing fees. Stripe’s cited card rate starts at 2.9% + $0.30, with method and international variations. See Stripe’s pricing explanation. It is not a zero-cost choice for ordinary ongoing invoicing.

Best Value

- CONSECUTIVE NUMBERS: Effortlessly identify the chronological order of transactions in each book by the pre-printed number on each sales order set

QuickBooks Online — accounting after a trial
QuickBooks connects mobile invoices to bookkeeping, tax tracking, reports and bank data. Its invoicing offer is a 30-day trial followed by paid plans, so it belongs in a “best trial-based accounting” category, not a free-forever ranking. Details are on QuickBooks’ invoicing page.
FreshBooks — polished trial-based workflow
FreshBooks emphasizes client management, time tracking and polished invoices, but current coverage presents it as a 30-day trial product. Check the current offer at FreshBooks before entering payment details.
Choose by business need
- Only occasional invoices: Zoho Invoice, Bookipi or Wave.
- Deposits and online payments: Square, PayPal or Zoho.
- Bookkeeping too: Wave; choose QuickBooks if a subscription is acceptable.
- Privacy, customization or self-hosting: Invoice Ninja.
- Developer automation: Stripe.
- International operations: verify country, currency, tax, gateway and data-residency rules directly; never assume U.S. terms apply.
How much can “free” payment collection cost?
A $1,000 card payment at 2.9% + $0.30 would cost $29.30. A $100 payment at the same rate costs $3.20, making the effective percentage higher because of the fixed fee. Your actual rate depends on provider, country, payment method, currency conversion, instant payouts, disputes and negotiated terms. Separate the software price from the cost of receiving money.
Checks before sending your first invoice
- Enter your legal business name, address and contact details.
- Add a unique invoice number, issue date and due date.
- Confirm the customer’s legal name, billing address and email.
- Itemize descriptions, quantities, rates, discounts and tax lines.
- State payment methods, late terms, refund rules and cancellation terms.
- Preview the PDF and send a test to yourself.
- Confirm where invoices, customer data, payments and expenses can be exported.
- Read the payment processor’s identity-verification, reserve, payout and dispute terms.
Bottom line
Start with Zoho Invoice for the most balanced free Android workflow. Pick Square Invoices when integrated payment acceptance and unlimited customers matter, Wave when bookkeeping is part of the job, PayPal Invoicing when customers already use PayPal or Venmo, and Invoice Ninja when self-hosting and control outweigh convenience. Treat Bookipi and Invoicely as options only after confirming their current Android listings and free-tier limits. Stripe, QuickBooks and FreshBooks are capable paid or trial alternatives—not free-forever apps.
