German startup Proxima Fusion drew attention in February 2025 for publishing a peer-reviewed, integrated design for a proposed fusion power plant called Stellaris. The work is an engineering milestone, not a prize for an operating reactor: Stellaris has not been built, has not generated net electricity and is not a commercial power station.
The headline in plain English
Proxima Fusion is a Munich-based company spun out of the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) in 2023. Its Stellaris concept is a quasi-isodynamic stellarator using high-temperature-superconducting magnets. Proxima and its partners published the concept in Fusion Engineering and Design on February 26, 2025. The company presented it as a step toward reliable, continuous fusion power and attracted substantial industry attention.
The available reporting supports “accolade” as praise or recognition for the design. It does not establish that Proxima won a formal reactor-design award. A separate company, Fusion Bionic, received a Fraunhofer Founder Award for laser-based surface treatments; it is unrelated to nuclear fusion (Fraunhofer IWS announcement).
What Proxima actually published
The paper attempted to integrate the parts a power plant would need rather than presenting only an optimized magnetic shape. Proxima’s announcement describes work covering:
#1 Best Overall
- Offers new, streamlined form of gameplay
- Multiple paths of victory offer unique strategy opportunity
- Expansive game engages both new and experienced players
- Plasma and magnetic-field optimization.
- High-temperature-superconducting magnet integration.
- Mechanical structures that carry magnetic forces.
- Heat management at plasma-facing components.
- A neutron-blanket concept adapted to stellarator geometry.
- Electromagnetic, structural, thermal and neutronic simulations.
That combination matters because a reactor can fail commercially even if its plasma physics looks promising. The design still requires a full engineering program, technology demonstrations, licensing and construction. Proxima’s own description of the project is available in its Stellaris announcement.
What “stellarator” and “quasi-isodynamic” mean
Stellarator
A stellarator confines extremely hot plasma with magnetic fields produced mainly by external coils. A tokamak also uses external magnets, but relies on a substantial current flowing through the plasma to create part of its confining field. Because a stellarator does not need the same transformer-driven plasma current, it is inherently compatible with steady-state operation.
Quasi-isodynamic
Quasi-isodynamic (QI) is a stellarator optimization approach intended to improve particle confinement and reduce losses while preserving the steady-state advantages of the configuration. It does not make the machine simple: QI coils and surrounding components have complicated three-dimensional shapes that must be manufactured, aligned, cooled and maintained precisely.
High-temperature superconducting magnets
HTS magnets can operate at higher temperatures than traditional low-temperature superconductors and may produce stronger fields in a more compact machine. The trade-off is substantial engineering risk: HTS conductors, joints, cryogenic systems and supports must withstand mechanical loads, radiation and repeated thermal stresses in a complex geometry.
Why continuous operation is important
A grid power station must supply energy for sustained periods. A stellarator’s externally generated magnetic configuration avoids the pulsed-transformer limitation associated with many tokamak operating modes, making continuous plasma operation a design objective.

That principle should not be confused with demonstrated electricity production. There are several different claims that are often collapsed into “net energy”:
- Fusion gain: fusion energy compared with energy delivered to the plasma.
- Engineering gain: whether the complete machine produces more usable energy than it consumes internally.
- Net electricity: whether electricity exported to the grid exceeds the plant’s total energy requirements.
Stellaris is a simulated design. It has not demonstrated any of these outcomes experimentally or supplied power to a grid.
How Wendelstein 7-X fits in
Proxima’s work builds on IPP’s Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) experiment in Greifswald. W7-X is a research stellarator, not Proxima’s reactor and not a commercial power plant. Its experiments provide evidence about stellarator plasma behavior and steady-state operation.

Proxima describes W7-X as the most advanced QI stellarator prototype and says its development drew on more than €1.3 billion in German and European public funding. That characterization comes from Proxima and its partners. W7-X and Stellaris also have different roles: W7-X demonstrates stellarator physics, while Stellaris attempts to combine that physics with power-plant engineering.
Alpha is the next proposed step
In a February 2026 memorandum of understanding, IPP, Proxima Fusion, the Bavarian government and utility RWE outlined an Alpha demonstration facility in Garching, near IPP. The arrangement assigns IPP the scientific mission and plasma physics, while Proxima would lead engineering, public tenders and construction. The partners described an overall budget of approximately €2 billion, with Bavaria offering up to €400 million subject to budgetary constraints; federal support was also required (IPP memorandum announcement).

Alpha is not simply a larger W7-X and is not planned as a continuous-operation power plant. IPP says it would use relatively short plasma pulses to address a different gap: scaling energy confinement and heat removal toward power-plant conditions. W7-X will continue its work on continuous stellarator operation.
Proxima’s original announcement set a company target of demonstrating net fusion energy with Alpha in 2031. That is an objective, not a completed result or a guaranteed schedule.

The major developments have been institutional and financial rather than experimental. IPP reported in July 2026 that Proxima had raised €411 million and that its valuation exceeded €2.4 billion. IPP said the private-investment condition described in the memorandum had been met or exceeded, but that a further €1.2 billion in federal funding had not yet been committed (IPP financing update).
| Item | Status reported by August 2026 |
|---|---|
| Stellaris | Peer-reviewed proposed power-plant design; not built |
| Alpha | Planned Garching demonstration; relatively short pulses |
| Alpha budget | Approximately €2 billion, as described in the memorandum |
| Bavarian contribution | Up to €400 million, subject to budgetary constraints |
| Private funding | €411 million raised, according to IPP |
| Federal funding | €1.2 billion still uncommitted in IPP’s July update |
| Possible later site | Former Gundremmingen nuclear-site area was mentioned as a possibility, not an approved construction site |
The hard technical problems still ahead
Plasma performance
Optimized simulations must be validated with real plasma. Confinement, stability and control can differ from design calculations.
Heat exhaust
Divertors and other plasma-facing components must remove intense heat without unacceptable erosion or failure.

Neutrons and materials
Deuterium-tritium fusion produces energetic neutrons that damage and activate structural and superconducting materials. A blanket must absorb neutron energy and, in a power plant, support tritium breeding and fuel handling.
Magnets and maintenance
Three-dimensional HTS coils must be manufactured, aligned, cooled and shielded. Activated components inside a tightly packed machine would require remote maintenance, potentially making outages lengthy and expensive.
Economics, regulation and schedule
Technical success would not by itself prove competitive electricity costs. Proxima would still need site approvals, safety demonstrations, licensing, supply chains and further funding. The 2031 date remains a company target, and Alpha’s progress depends on the public-financing conditions described by IPP.
Stellarator versus tokamak
| Issue | Stellarator | Tokamak |
|---|---|---|
| Magnetic configuration | Primarily externally shaped fields | External fields plus substantial plasma current |
| Steady-state potential | Strong theoretical advantage | Requires current-drive and control solutions |
| Design challenge | Complex three-dimensional coils, heat handling and maintenance | Current control, disruptions and steady-state operation |
| Commercial status | No commercial plant operating | No commercial plant operating |
Neither approach has yet produced a commercially operating fusion power station, so Stellaris should not be presented as proof that stellarators have won the technology race.
Is fusion “clean”?
Fusion could provide low-carbon electricity during operation and avoids the chain reaction and spent-fuel profile of conventional fission. It does not mean zero waste or zero risk. Neutron activation, tritium handling, cooling systems, construction materials and component disposal remain part of the plant’s environmental and safety case.
