Twitter Super Follows is no longer the current product name. Twitter launched the paid-subscription feature on September 1, 2021; X relaunched it as Creator Subscriptions in April 2023. Today it is generally presented as Subscriptions on X, allowing eligible creators to charge a recurring monthly fee for exclusive posts and subscriber-only interactions.

The old name still appears in search results, so this guide explains the naming change, current eligibility, subscriber experience, creator payouts, risks, and alternatives.

What were Twitter Super Follows?

Super Follows was Twitter’s original paid-membership product. Eligible creators could charge followers a monthly fee in exchange for bonus Tweets, behind-the-scenes material, early previews, and subscriber-only conversations.

Twitter announced the feature on September 1, 2021. The launch offered three monthly price points—$2.99, $4.99, and $9.99—and initially allowed a small group of U.S. creators to set up subscriptions. Subscribers in the United States and Canada could subscribe to selected accounts through iOS, with Android and Twitter.com support expected to follow. These were launch conditions, not today’s rules. Twitter’s launch announcement also listed historical requirements of at least 10,000 followers, 25 Tweets in the previous 30 days, and age 18 or older.

What happened to Super Follows?

X did not simply delete the paid-subscription program. It renamed and relaunched it. X’s company timeline describes Creator Subscriptions as the program “previously named ‘Super Follows’”; the relaunch was announced April 13, 2023, and creator subscriptions launched globally on April 28, 2023. See X’s product timeline.

Current help pages use “Subscriptions” and “Creator Subscriptions.” Older articles, videos, and forum posts may still call the feature Twitter Super Follows.

How X Subscriptions work

A creator applies through X’s monetization or Creator Studio tools. If accepted, the creator selects a monthly price point made available by X and describes the benefits. The exact package varies by creator.

Subscriber benefits

  • Subscriber-only posts.
  • A subscriber badge displayed when the subscriber replies to the creator.
  • A Subscribers tab in notifications for creators using iOS.
  • A dedicated subscription link that can be shared on or off X.
  • Subscriber-only replies on selected public posts.
  • Subscriber-only Spaces.

A subscription does not automatically include direct messages, private communities, one-to-one support, every post, or personalized work. Read the individual creator’s description before paying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What non-subscribers can see

Regular public posts remain public. Subscriber-only posts and replies are restricted to active subscribers. Non-subscribers may see a preview, but not the complete post or its replies. Subscribers can quote or repost subscriber-only posts; non-subscribers still see only a preview. X explains the visibility rules here.

How to subscribe to a creator

From a profile

  1. Open the creator’s X profile.
  2. Select Subscribe when the button appears.
  3. Review the price, description, and promised benefits.
  4. Select Subscribe again and complete payment through the available X, Apple, Google, or web checkout.

From a link or post preview

Creators can share a dedicated subscription link. You may also see a subscriber-only post preview in the feed or on a profile with a subscription button. Both routes lead to that creator’s subscription page. See X’s creator feature documentation.

Cancellation

Cancel through the same channel used for purchase: Apple’s App Store for an iOS purchase, Google Play for an Android purchase, or X’s web/payment flow for a web purchase. Unfollowing the creator or deleting the X app does not itself cancel billing. X says Subscriptions purchases are generally final and non-refundable unless the law requires otherwise; Apple and Google handle refund requests for purchases made through their stores.

X currently says it does not offer free trials. One person can subscribe to multiple creators, but each is a separate purchase. X also says only one X account can subscribe to and access a specific creator’s Subscription, with in-app purchases tied to the relevant Apple ID or Google Account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who can subscribe?

Anyone in a region where Subscriptions are available can purchase one. X lists iOS, Android, and the web as supported purchase platforms. “Available for purchase globally” does not mean every creator can apply from every country: creator participation also depends on countries supported by X’s payment provider. Subscriber availability and creator availability are separate questions.

Creators do not receive a subscriber’s payment-card details. That does not guarantee that the subscriber is anonymous; X’s current documentation does not promise anonymous subscriptions.

What does an X Subscription cost?

The $2.99, $4.99, and $9.99 prices belonged to the 2021 Super Follows launch. They should not be presented as today’s universal menu. X’s current creator documentation says creators choose from price points made available by X, without publishing one universal current price table. The amount shown on a creator’s profile is the amount to check before subscribing and may vary with region, taxes, and purchase method. Current pricing mechanism.

How creators qualify

X’s current eligibility materials list these requirements:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Age 18 or older.
  • An account active for at least three months.
  • A complete profile and verified email address.
  • Two-factor authentication enabled.
  • No repeated violations of X rules or monetization standards.
  • An active X Premium, Premium Business, or Premium Organizations subscription.
  • Identity verification and a verified Stripe payout account.
  • At least 2,000 qualifying followers.
  • At least 5 million organic impressions during the previous three months.
  • Activity during the previous 30 days.

There is an important wording conflict in X’s own pages. The general Subscriptions FAQ says 2,000 verified followers; the detailed Subscriptions policy says 2,000 or more active followers with Premium subscriptions. Treat the Monetization or Creator Studio eligibility screen as the practical final check, because X can change or apply rules account by account.

Meeting the list does not guarantee approval. X reserves the right to approve, pause, or revoke participation. It may also disable monetization temporarily when it believes an account has been compromised. Policy violations, failed identity checks, or a mismatch between account and payout information can prevent or interrupt payments. Sources: creator requirements, Subscriptions Policy, and Creator Monetization Standards.

Is X Premium required?

Yes, according to the current eligibility materials. A creator must maintain X Premium, Premium Business, or Premium Organizations. Premium is a prerequisite, not an acceptance guarantee.

For U.S. web pricing, X’s published page lists Basic from $3 per month or $32 per year, Premium from $8 per month or $84 per year, and Premium+ at $40 per month or $395 per year on the cited pricing page. Prices can differ by country, taxes, purchase channel, and later changes. Check X Premium pricing before purchasing.

How much do creators earn?

X says creators can earn up to approximately 97% of gross Subscription revenue, after applicable third-party deductions. Those deductions can include Apple or Google in-app-purchase fees, payment processing, refunds, cancellations, and chargebacks.

X’s Creator Dashboard adds a qualification: a creator can receive up to 97% of the revenue X has earned from the content until reaching $50,000 in lifetime earnings across X monetization products. After that threshold, the creator may receive up to 90% of revenue after in-app-purchase fees. These are maximum statements, not a promise that every creator receives that percentage. See the dashboard explanation.

Why the advertised price is not the payout

For a $5 subscription purchased through an app store, the creator does not necessarily receive 97% of $5. X’s U.S. dashboard example shows a $5 subscription with a $1.50 Apple in-app-purchase fee before the creator’s share is calculated. The final amount can also change after refunds or chargebacks.

The useful distinction is:

  • Gross subscription price: what the subscriber is charged before deductions.
  • Post-fee revenue: what remains after app-store or payment fees.
  • Estimated earnings: X’s current calculation, which can later be adjusted.
  • Final payout: the amount paid after refunds, chargebacks, and other applicable adjustments.
  • Taxable income: the creator’s responsibility under applicable tax rules.

How payouts work

X uses Stripe for Subscriptions payouts. The creator sets up Stripe through Creator Studio; Stripe determines eligibility and available payout methods based on location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • X lists a $50 minimum unpaid balance before a revenue-share payment is issued. Smaller balances roll into the following month.
  • Payments generally arrive about 60 days after the end of the month in which revenue was received.
  • Payments are typically made during the first two weeks of the payment month. For example, March revenue would typically be paid during the first two weeks of May.
  • Refunds and chargebacks can reduce estimated earnings or future payouts.

A payout can fail when the creator’s account details do not match Stripe’s records. X’s payout guidance describes the timing, threshold, and information requirements.

Subscriptions versus Tips and Revenue Sharing

Program How money is generated What the supporter receives
Subscriptions Recurring monthly payment Creator-defined exclusive posts or interactions
Tips One-off payment No guaranteed exclusive access
Creator Revenue Sharing Calculated using program factors such as engagement and impressions from verified users No paid-membership entitlement

Tips are occasional support, not a substitute for a Subscription. Revenue Sharing is a separate program with different requirements and payout mechanics; qualifying for one does not automatically qualify a creator for the other. See Tips and Creator Revenue Sharing.

Is X Subscriptions worth it for creators?

It can fit when

  • You have a highly engaged niche audience, not merely a large follower count.
  • Followers already request deeper analysis, early access, private discussions, or extended content.
  • You can deliver a repeatable benefit without abandoning the public feed.
  • You meet the reach thresholds and can tolerate delayed, variable payouts.
  • You want discovery, discussion, and payment to remain mainly inside X.

It is a weak fit when

  • You are below the qualifying follower or impression thresholds.
  • Your audience is broad but weakly engaged.
  • The promised benefit is vague or you cannot publish consistently.
  • You need to own the customer relationship, email list, or audience data outside X.
  • You cannot absorb refunds, chargebacks, policy changes, or a possible loss of access.

The central business risk is platform dependence. Maintain an external channel—such as an email list or independent membership site—so a change to X discovery, account access, eligibility, or policy does not erase your entire audience relationship.

Is an X Subscription worth it for subscribers?

Before paying, verify the specific offer rather than assuming every creator provides the same membership. Check:

  • What format is included: posts, replies, Spaces, early access, or something else.
  • How often the creator has recently delivered subscriber-only material.
  • Whether the creator’s content is duplicated in a newsletter, membership site, or another service.
  • The renewal price and the cancellation route for your purchase channel.
  • Whether the subscription would still be worthwhile if posting slows or stops.

Subscriber-only access is most compelling when the creator offers a clearly defined, recurring benefit. A badge alone is unlikely to justify an ongoing charge.

Alternatives to X Subscriptions

These services represent different business models rather than identical price comparisons:

  • Patreon: Better for structured membership tiers, posts, community features, and a dedicated creator hub.
  • Substack: Better when the paid product is a newsletter, written analysis, podcast, or email-based audience.
  • Ko-fi: Useful for combining tips, memberships, commissions, and lightweight supporter payments.
  • Buy Me a Coffee: Suited to simple one-time support and basic memberships.
  • YouTube memberships: A natural fit when the core product is video and the audience already lives on YouTube.
  • Discord memberships: Better when the paid product is a private community rather than posts in a public social feed.

Patreon (patreon.com), Substack (substack.com), and Ko-fi (ko-fi.com) can reduce reliance on X, but moving supporters off X may add friction and reduce the benefit of X-native discovery.

Bottom line

“Twitter Super Follows” is the historical name for X’s current Subscriptions product. The modern version can provide recurring creator income and exclusive posts, replies, and Spaces, but access is selective, payouts are delayed, and “up to 97%” is not the same as 97% of the sticker price. Creators should confirm eligibility in Creator Studio, define benefits precisely, and build an audience channel outside X; subscribers should inspect the offer and cancellation terms before committing.
