Its 2024 agreement with OpenAI created a controlled, optional extension inside an Apple-owned stack: Apple’s models handle core tasks, Private Cloud Compute handles some heavier workloads, and ChatGPT is called when Apple decides an outside model may help.
That distinction matters even more in 2026. Apple has publicly aligned its next-generation foundation-model work with Google Gemini, while a separate Apple lawsuit alleges misuse of confidential information by OpenAI. The original integration remains important, but describing Apple and OpenAI as an expanding, conventional alliance is no longer accurate.
The partnership in one diagram
The simplest accurate model is:
Apple device ├── Apple on-device model ├── Apple Private Cloud Compute └── Optional ChatGPT extension
Apple’s own models
Apple introduced an approximately 3-billion-parameter on-device language model and a larger server model for Private Cloud Compute. These models were designed for writing, summarization, personal context, image understanding and system actions. Apple describes Private Cloud Compute as its privacy-focused server architecture for requests that exceed local hardware capabilities (Apple’s foundation-model overview; technical paper; Private Cloud Compute security explanation).
The ChatGPT branch
ChatGPT is an external capability Apple can invoke selectively. Depending on the feature and request, Siri or Writing Tools can ask ChatGPT to generate or rewrite text, answer a question, or analyze an image or document. The user is prompted before relevant information is sent.

So “Apple Intelligence” and “ChatGPT integration” describe related but different layers. OpenAI supplies a model and account ecosystem; Apple owns the interface, routing and operating-system experience.
What Apple and OpenAI actually announced
On June 10, 2024, Apple and OpenAI announced ChatGPT integration across iOS, iPadOS and macOS. The announcement said:
- Siri could consult ChatGPT when useful.
- ChatGPT could assist with Apple Writing Tools.
- ChatGPT could analyze images and documents.
- Users would be asked before requests, photos or documents were sent.
- The integration could be used without a ChatGPT account.
- Users could link an account to access their applicable paid features.
- The initial integration used GPT-4o.
Apple and OpenAI did not announce that ChatGPT would replace Apple’s models or become the operating system’s default model. The primary source is OpenAI’s partnership announcement.
Who controls what?
| Layer | Apple | OpenAI |
|---|---|---|
| User experience | Controls the interface, placement and consent prompt | Does not control the Apple interface |
| Routing | Decides when ChatGPT is offered and what context is transmitted | Generates the response after receiving an authorized request |
| Core Apple Intelligence | Owns its on-device models and Private Cloud Compute | Provides no evidence of replacing those models |
| Account relationship | Controls device-level access | Controls ChatGPT accounts, history and paid features under its policies |
| Future providers | Can add or change model suppliers | Depends on Apple’s continued distribution choice |
This is distribution without platform surrender. OpenAI gained access to Apple’s installed base, but Apple retained the ability to limit visibility, context and provider choice.

What each company was trying to gain
Apple’s strategic position
Apple could add a widely recognized general-purpose model quickly without making OpenAI the owner of Siri. The arrangement also let Apple preserve its own models and privacy architecture, use an outside provider where its models were weaker, and retain leverage to add or replace providers.
Those are strategic interpretations rather than disclosed contractual objectives. Apple’s later agreement with Google makes the provider-optionality point concrete.
OpenAI’s strategic position
OpenAI obtained distribution through Apple’s operating systems, exposure to users who might never install ChatGPT, a route to account linking and paid features, and credibility from appearing in core Apple software. The announcement explicitly describes account linking and paid-feature access; the broader distribution value is an inference from that placement (OpenAI).
Privacy depends on the user’s account state
“Apple privacy” does not mean every request stays on the device. It means Apple designed a consent and routing system with stated limits. The practical distinction is whether the user uses ChatGPT anonymously or links an account.

| Use case | Published treatment |
|---|---|
| No ChatGPT account | OpenAI says it does not receive the user’s IP address, store requests or responses except where legally required, or use the information to train or improve models. Apple sends the request, relevant attachments and limited contextual information needed to operate the feature. |
| Linked ChatGPT account | The user’s ChatGPT account and OpenAI data settings apply. Requests, attachments and session history may be handled under the applicable OpenAI policies, and paid ChatGPT features may become available. |
These terms come from OpenAI’s Apple-integration help page and Apple’s third-party AI privacy disclosure. Attachments can include documents or photos when the user authorizes the request. Regional availability, language support and exact data flows can vary by feature, operating system and geography.
Private Cloud Compute is a different path: it is Apple’s own server-side system, not a ChatGPT request. On supported devices, Apple says the ChatGPT extension can be disabled at Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT > Use ChatGPT (Apple).
Why the deal was so widely misunderstood
“ChatGPT powers Apple Intelligence”
Apple publicly described its own foundation models and Private Cloud Compute. ChatGPT is an optional external integration, not the entire Apple Intelligence system.
“Apple outsourced Siri to OpenAI”
Apple retained Siri’s interface and routing decisions. The later Google collaboration demonstrates that Apple’s model-provider strategy was not permanently tied to OpenAI.

“The deal was mainly about model quality”
Capability was only one component. Distribution, consent, account conversion, privacy boundaries and bargaining power were equally important.
“Free access creates no commercial value for OpenAI”
Even anonymous use can provide exposure, while account linking creates a path to direct ChatGPT usage and paid features. Public sources do not establish the parties’ financial terms.
“Apple’s privacy protections are identical for every user”
The no-account and logged-in flows have materially different data-handling terms.
“The partnership is still expanding in 2026”
Apple’s Google announcement moved the strategic center of gravity, and the lawsuit changed the broader relationship. Neither fact alone proves that every ChatGPT software feature has ended.

What changed in 2026?
January 12: Google becomes the announced model partner for the next generation
Apple and Google announced a multi-year collaboration under which the next generation of Apple Foundation Models would be based on Google Gemini models and cloud technology, including work toward a more personalized Siri. Apple said Apple Intelligence would continue to run on Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute (Google and Apple joint statement).
June 8: Private Cloud Compute expands
Apple said it was expanding Private Cloud Compute beyond its own data centers and collaborating with Google and NVIDIA. Apple also said it had collaborated with Google on the next generation of Apple Foundation Models (Apple’s June 2026 update).
July: Apple sues OpenAI
Apple filed a lawsuit alleging that OpenAI and people associated with its hardware effort misused confidential Apple information. The allegations remain disputed and unadjudicated. Reporting on the case is available from Apple News and Bloomberg’s podcast report.
The case concerns more than the ChatGPT software integration, but it makes “expanding alliance” an unsafe description. As of August 18, 2026, the public record supports a narrower conclusion: the historical integration remains significant, Google is the publicly announced partner for next-generation foundation-model work, and Apple and OpenAI are litigating over alleged trade-secret misuse. The sources reviewed do not establish that the original ChatGPT integration has been fully terminated.

The business trade-off for each side
| Apple gains | Apple risks |
|---|---|
| Fast access to a strong general-purpose model; better perceived AI capability; preserved interface control; provider competition | Dependence on an outside model; privacy and regulatory scrutiny; stronger ChatGPT branding; inconsistent behavior between Apple and external models |
| OpenAI gains | OpenAI risks |
| Distribution through Apple; users who might not install ChatGPT; account and subscription opportunities; credibility | Apple controls visibility and context; anonymous use may not create a durable relationship; Apple can add competitors; dependence on a powerful gatekeeper |
What users and executives should watch
- Routing: Is a request handled on-device, by Private Cloud Compute or by ChatGPT?
- Consent: What will be sent, and did the user authorize it?
- Account status: Is the user anonymous or logged in to ChatGPT?
- Provider choice: Can Apple add, remove or substitute a model supplier?
- Product identity: Can users tell whether an answer came from Apple’s model or ChatGPT?
- Legal scope: Are public claims about the lawsuit being confused with a termination announcement?
Apple’s 2026 developer materials describe support for Apple models and other providers, reinforcing that abstraction and replaceability are central to Apple’s architecture (Apple developer guide; WWDC26 session).
The broader lesson
Platform companies want model providers to behave like interchangeable utilities. Model companies want distribution to become an indispensable user relationship. Apple–OpenAI worked when those goals overlapped at the integration layer: Apple supplied the audience and controls; OpenAI supplied a specialist capability. The arrangement was never evidence that OpenAI owned Apple’s intelligence platform.
That is why the partnership looked deeper than it was—and why Google’s later role and the Apple lawsuit matter so much. The visible product experience was ChatGPT on Apple devices; the underlying strategy was Apple preserving optionality while OpenAI sought durable distribution.
