Bottom line: The iPhone 15 is no longer sold as a regular new model by Apple Canada, and Apple’s 2026 education promotion is not an iPhone discount. The clearest advertised device-price signal is Best Buy Canada’s Freedom Mobile offer at $23.63 per month for 24 months (about $567.12 for the phone), but the required plan, taxes, activation costs and contract conditions determine whether it is actually cheapest. Compare the full 24-month cost with an unlocked, open-box or refurbished phone—and with newer iPhone 17e and iPhone 16 pricing—before buying.

Is the iPhone 15 still worth buying in 2026?
It can be, but only at a substantial discount. The iPhone 15 remains a capable 6.1-inch phone with a Super Retina XDR display, Dynamic Island, USB-C charging, a 48-megapixel main camera and 2x telephoto capability. Those features suit school messaging, document scanning, video calls and ordinary photography.
#1 Best Overall
- 6.1inch Super Retina XDR display. Aluminum with color-infused glass back. Ring/Silent switch
- Dynamic Island. A magical way to interact with iPhone. A16 Bionic chip with 5-core GPU
- Advanced dual-camera system. 48MP Main | Ultra Wide. Super-high-resolution photos (24MP and 48MP). Next-generation portraits with Focus and Depth Control. 4X optical zoom range
- Emergency SOS via satellite. Crash Detection. Roadside Assistance via satellite
- Up to 26 hours video playback. USB C, Supports USB 2. Face ID
However, it is two generations behind the iPhone 17 family. Newer phones are likely to receive major software updates for longer and generally retain more resale value. The iPhone 15 makes financial sense when its total cost is clearly below a comparable iPhone 16 or iPhone 17e—not merely because its monthly payment looks small.
Best Buy’s product description confirms the iPhone 15 specifications at this listing.
The lowest advertised monthly payment: Freedom Mobile
Freedom’s $23.63 monthly device payment is the strongest apparent iPhone 15 device-price signal found. Multiplying by 24 gives $567.12 before service and taxes. That does not establish the lowest all-in Canadian cost: the surfaced listing did not establish the minimum eligible plan, activation charge, cancellation cost, credit requirements or whether any end-of-term payment or return condition applies.
Verify these terms before signing
- Is the phone financed for exactly 24 months?
- What is the least expensive eligible Freedom plan in your province?
- Does changing or cancelling the plan remove monthly credits or trigger a balance?
- Is the device unlocked, and can it be used on another network after payoff?
- Are there connection, SIM or administrative charges?
- Do you own the phone at month 24, or must you return it or pay a buyout?
Bell and TELUS: higher device payments, separate plans
The Bell listing showed $36.41 per month, or approximately $873.84 over 24 months. The listed full device price was about $873.72. TELUS showed $42.79 per month, or approximately $1,026.96 over 24 months. These calculations use the displayed payments; they are not independently verified final invoices.

Neither figure includes the mobile plan. An existing customer may avoid some switching friction, but compare the upgrade offer with the cost of keeping your current phone or moving to a cheaper BYOD plan. A “free” or heavily discounted device can cost more if it requires a premium unlimited plan, a new line, a trade-in or 24–36 months of bill credits.
When an unlocked or refurbished iPhone 15 wins
An unlocked phone bought outright can cost more today but may cost less over two years. Apple says iPhones purchased directly from Apple are unlocked and can be used with the carrier of your choice: Apple’s buying guidance. You can then choose a lower-cost prepaid or BYOD plan, switch carriers, sell the phone independently and keep it after 24 months without a final carrier obligation.
Check the condition and warranty
- Apple Certified Refurbished: Apple advertises a one-year warranty, but current iPhone 15 inventory and pricing were not established.
- Retailer-certified: Confirm battery-health standards, parts policy, warranty provider and return window.
- Private marketplace: Verify the IMEI, Activation Lock status, battery health, Parts and Service History, Face ID, cameras, speakers, microphones, charging, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and cellular service. Meet safely and avoid phones with unpaid balances or theft reports.
Do not treat “refurbished” as a uniform condition category. The seller and written warranty matter as much as the headline price.
Apple’s 2026 back-to-school promotion does not discount the iPhone 15
Apple’s Canadian education promotion runs from July 16 through August 27, 2026. Its gift-card offer is tied to qualifying Mac and iPad purchases, not a general iPhone 15 sale. Eligibility covers qualifying post-secondary students, parents buying for eligible students, faculty, staff and specified K–12 employees; it is not automatically available to every high-school student or parent. See the terms and education store.

Apple’s current Canadian buy page lists the iPhone 17e from $899, iPhone 16 from $999, iPhone 17 from $1,129, iPhone Air from $1,449 and iPhone 17 Pro from $1,599. It does not list the iPhone 15 as a regular new model: Apple Canada’s lineup. Apple also advertises 0% APR iPhone financing over 24 months through Affirm, subject to eligibility and current terms: financing details.
How to calculate the real deal
Use this formula for every carrier offer:
Total 24-month cost = device payments + required plan costs + activation or connection fees + taxes + financing or upgrade charges + any buyout − guaranteed credits or gift cards.
For example, the Freedom device portion is $23.63 × 24 = $567.12. Add 24 months of the required plan and all one-time charges, then compare that result with the purchase price of an unlocked phone plus 24 months of your preferred BYOD plan. Do not count a trade-in estimate as guaranteed until the device passes inspection.
Trade-in credits require caution
Apple’s Canadian terms say the quoted value can change after inspection. The device must match the described condition, Find My iPhone must be removed and the phone must arrive by the required deadline. Apple or its third-party vendor may refuse, cancel or limit a transaction: Apple trade-in terms.

Which model and storage should a student choose?
iPhone 15 128GB
Choose it for messaging, photos, streaming, cloud storage and ordinary school use when the discount is meaningful.
iPhone 15 256GB
Pay more when you record substantial video, download media or expect to keep the phone for four or five years. A cheaper 128GB model is false economy if it fills quickly.
iPhone 15 Plus
Buy it only for a specifically desired larger display and battery. Size alone does not make it better value.
iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max
Older Pro models are usually poor back-to-school values unless clearance pricing is unusually aggressive; they can approach the price of newer standard iPhones.
Best Value
- 6.1" Super Retina XDR OLED, HDR10, 800 nits (HBM), 1200 nits (peak), 2532x1170px at 460ppi, 4005mAh Battery

- Connectivity: Global 4G LTE, Sub-6 GHz 5G, LTE, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, USB-C, Wireless Charging (7.5W). (does not have mmWave 5G or MagSafe or physical SIM card) - Dual eSIM Only
- Unlocked for freedom to choose your carrier. Compatible with both GSM & CDMA networks. The phone is unlocked to work with all GSM Carriers & CDMA Carriers Including AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Straight Talk., Etc.
Budget for the costs beyond the handset
- A protective case and screen protector.
- A USB-C power adapter if you do not already have one.
- A suitable mobile plan, including hotspot needs.
- Optional AppleCare+ or insurance.
- Cloud storage for photos and school files.
- An emergency reserve for loss or damage.
Insurance is not automatically worthwhile. A reasonably priced case and a savings buffer may be better for a student who can absorb a repair but does not want another recurring bill.
Should you wait for September, Black Friday or Boxing Day?
Waiting can improve selection or produce clearance discounts as retailers make room for newer models. September promotions may instead emphasize the iPhone 16 or iPhone 17e, while Black Friday and Boxing Day often bring stronger retailer and carrier incentives. Future prices cannot be guaranteed.
Buy now when you need a phone, the calculated all-in cost is clearly below comparable newer models, and the plan has no expensive commitment. Wait when inventory is plentiful, the discount is small or you can comfortably monitor late-August, September and holiday sales.
Recommendations by buyer type
- Lowest advertised monthly payment: Investigate Freedom’s $23.63 offer, but approve it only after adding the plan and confirming ownership terms.
- Lowest likely total cost: Compare an unlocked or properly certified refurbished iPhone 15 with a low-cost BYOD plan.
- Existing Bell or TELUS customer: Check your account’s upgrade or retention offer against the full 24-month cost, not just the device payment.
- Student likely to switch carriers: Prefer an unlocked phone with no promotional-credit or return obligation.
- Heavy camera or video user: Choose 256GB or compare a newer model if its price gap is modest.
- Buyer finding only a small iPhone 15 discount: Price the iPhone 17e and iPhone 16 before committing; the newer phone may justify the difference through support life and resale value.
The Bottom Line
The iPhone 15 is a sensible back-to-school purchase only when its complete two-year cost is substantially below newer alternatives. Treat Freedom’s $23.63 monthly listing as a lead to investigate—not proof of the cheapest deal. For maximum flexibility, an unlocked or well-documented refurbished iPhone 15 paired with a low-cost BYOD plan is often the cleaner financial comparison.
