Short answer: No. The Proton VPN promotion advertised as “75 percent off” was a Black Friday 2025 offer: $59.76 paid upfront for 24 months of Proton VPN Plus, or $2.49 per month as an effective equivalent. It was not a monthly billing plan, and there is no evidence that the same price remains available in October 2026. The original article was updated November 29, 2025, while related coverage described the promotions as ending around Cyber Monday.
What the Proton VPN deal actually was
The historical offer covered Proton VPN Plus for 24 months at $59.76 upfront. Dividing that total by 24 produced the advertised effective rate of $2.49 per month. The “75 percent off” calculation compared $59.76 with a stated regular-price comparison of $10 per month for 24 months, or $240. That produces a nominal $180 saving against that comparison price.
Those figures come from Engadget’s Black Friday article, updated November 29, 2025: Engadget’s historical deal report. They should be treated as an archive of the 2025 promotion, not as a current price.
Is the 75% Proton VPN offer still live?
It is not confirmed as live now. TechRadar’s contemporaneous coverage said the 2025 promotions ran through the end of Cyber Monday and gave ExpressVPN a December 2, 2025, 23:59 UTC deadline (TechRadar’s live coverage). That window has passed.

A Proton partner page remains accessible and displays a generic special offer, but its visible headline says 70 percent off and its dynamic price fields currently contain incomplete values such as “$XX.XX,” “0.00” and “undefined% off.” It cannot substantiate the old $59.76 price. Check the Proton offer page and the final checkout screen before paying. The checkout total, term and renewal wording control.

Engadget disclosed that it could receive commissions from purchases. Its speed and usability observations were historical testing results, not a guarantee of present performance. A separate Engadget review reported fluctuating speeds, high latency, dropped connections and interface problems for PIA during its testing: PIA review.

Which VPN fits which buyer?
Privacy-first, VPN-only use
Proton VPN is the most natural historical fit for someone prioritizing a privacy-oriented provider without paying for a password manager or antivirus bundle. Verify the current Plus price and renewal terms rather than relying on the expired 75-percent headline.
Security bundle
NordVPN Plus and Surfshark One can make sense when you will actually use their additional tools. Nord’s package adds NordPass and threat, ad and tracker-related features. Surfshark One combines VPN access with antivirus, breach alerts, search and Alternative ID. A bundle is poor value if you already have equivalent services or only need encrypted connections.
Lowest historical upfront cost
CyberGhost had the lowest upfront total in the six-provider comparison, at $56.94, while PIA offered the longest advertised access period at 40 months for $79.20. Cheap pricing does not resolve questions about performance, renewal cost or whether you will remain a customer for several years.

Simplest experience
Engadget characterized ExpressVPN as user-friendly and fast, with locations in 105 countries. That was a dated assessment; current speed, availability and price must be checked at ExpressVPN’s order page.
Multiple devices and platforms
The Proton partner page lists Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, browsers, Linux and routers, and says the service supports up to 10 devices. Because its pricing display is unreliable, treat those platform and device claims separately from the price and confirm the simultaneous-device rule in checkout.

An effective monthly figure is a calculation, not the amount charged each month. The Proton promotion required the full $59.76 at purchase. Before accepting any VPN offer, check:

- the exact amount charged today, including tax;
- the paid term and any bonus months;
- the renewal price and whether renewal is monthly, annual or another long term;
- whether the promotion is for new customers, a particular country or currency, or a specific device;
- the number of simultaneous devices and supported platforms;
- the refund window and its exclusions; and
- whether buying through Apple or Google changes billing, cancellation or refund procedures.
Installing an app does not cancel auto-renewal. If you buy directly from a provider, cancel recurring billing in the provider account; app-store subscriptions generally must be managed through the relevant store.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Long plans and bonus months: calculate the commitment
“24 months plus three free months” means 27 months of access unless checkout defines the term differently. Compare both the total charged and the total access period. A three-year commitment can be bad value if you only need a VPN for a trip, are unsure whether it works on your network, expect to move somewhere with weaker connectivity, or want to switch before renewal.
Shorter historical promotions from providers such as Windscribe or PrivadoVPN were less expensive in total, while FastestVPN’s reported lifetime offer traded a low one-time price for uncertainty about long-term service support. Those 2025 promotions also require fresh verification.
Best Value
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Streaming is possible, not guaranteed
A VPN can change the apparent location of your connection and may help with legitimate travel-related access. Streaming services actively detect and block VPN endpoints, however. Results vary by service, country, server and time, and a VPN does not guarantee access to a particular catalog. Engadget’s reported Netflix result for ExpressVPN was a historical test, not a current promise. Use services in accordance with their terms.
What a VPN cannot do
- It does not make you anonymous.
- It does not prevent phishing or malware by itself.
- It cannot protect an account after its password has been compromised.
- It does not stop tracking by services where you are logged in.
- It can reduce speed, increase latency, trigger CAPTCHAs or interfere with banking and shopping sites.
- Employers, schools, websites and streaming platforms can block VPN connections.
Checkout checklist for any current deal
- Open the provider’s official page, not an opaque redirect. For comparisons, use NordVPN pricing, ExpressVPN order, Surfshark, CyberGhost or Private Internet Access.
- Record the country, currency, date and exact plan name.
- Confirm the final total after taxes and any bonus months.
- Read the renewal amount and renewal interval immediately above the purchase button.
- Check device limits, supported operating systems and router or smart-TV support if relevant.
- Read the money-back guarantee, including exclusions and whether it differs for app-store purchases.
- Save the receipt and set a calendar reminder before the promotional term ends.
How to judge value beyond the discount
Rank an offer by total upfront cost, initial and total access period, renewal terms, simultaneous devices, platform support, privacy evidence and audits, performance consistency, streaming reliability, feature relevance, refund policy, company jurisdiction and cancellation experience. A large percentage discount is not a substitute for those facts.
For independent context on alternatives, see TechRadar’s Surfshark review, PrivadoVPN review and Windscribe review. Historical FastestVPN coverage appears at TechRadar’s FastestVPN article.
The Bottom Line
The Proton VPN “75 percent off” promotion was a real Black Friday 2025 deal, but its $59.76 price is expired and unverified for 2026. Choose based on the checkout total, total access months, renewal terms and features you will actually use—not the headline percentage.
