On December 22, 2025, a suspected distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack knocked La Poste’s major online services offline during the Christmas delivery rush. La Poste’s website and app, Colissimo tracking, Digiposte, La Poste Digital Identity and La Banque Postale’s online banking channels were affected. The available public reporting described a severe availability incident, not a confirmed theft of customer data: La Poste said it had found no impact on customer data, while physical branches, ATMs, payment networks and parts of postal operations continued.
What happened on December 22, 2025?
The disruption began on the morning of Monday, December 22, three days before Christmas. La Poste confirmed an external cyberattack and characterized it as a denial-of-service incident; contemporaneous reporting described the event as a distributed denial-of-service attack. The timing magnified its practical effect because customers were shipping parcels, checking delivery status, making payments and contacting support at peak seasonal volume.
La Banque Postale, La Poste’s banking arm, said customers could not access its online-banking website and mobile application. La Poste’s own digital channels and several group services were also unavailable or impaired.
La Poste’s initial announcement is available at La Poste Groupe. Le Monde’s technology account provides additional service details at Le Monde.

Services reported as affected
- La Poste’s public website and mobile application.
- Colissimo parcel services, including tracking and related online workflows.
- Digiposte, the group’s digital document-storage service.
- La Poste Digital Identity.
- La Banque Postale’s online banking website and mobile application.
This list describes digital access problems, not the shutdown of every branch, delivery route or banking function.
What customers could still do
During December 22–23, customers had several fallback options, although availability varied by service and location.
- Postal and banking transactions could be handled at post-office counters.
- Cash withdrawals remained possible at ATMs.
- Ordinary card payments in stores and interbank payment flows were reported to continue.
- Some online card payments could use SMS authentication instead of La Banque Postale’s Certicode service.
- Mail and parcel delivery was reported to continue, even as tracking and some processing tools were disrupted.
A missing tracking update therefore did not by itself mean that a parcel had been lost. The practical problem was reduced digital visibility and, in some cases, slower or more manual processing. Seasonal parcel volumes and temporary workarounds could also contribute to delays; not every delay can be attributed solely to the attack.

Why this was described as a DDoS attack
A DDoS attack floods a website, application or network with traffic or requests from many sources, exhausting the capacity needed to serve legitimate users. Its immediate objective is loss of availability. It is different from ransomware, credential theft or a database breach, although a prolonged availability attack can create secondary operational risks when services share authentication, hosting, APIs or traffic-management infrastructure.
That distinction explains how La Poste could report widespread outages while also saying it had no evidence of customer-data impact. An inaccessible login page does not prove that account balances, passwords or personal data were stolen. Conversely, an availability incident alone cannot prove that every underlying system was completely uncompromised; that requires investigation beyond the outage symptoms.
How long did the disruption last?
| Date | What was publicly reported |
|---|---|
| December 22, 2025 | La Poste’s website and affiliated digital services became inaccessible; La Banque Postale’s online channels were unavailable; parcel tracking and related workflows were impaired. |
| December 23, 2025 | Several services remained unavailable or only partly restored. French authorities said the attack had declined in intensity but was continuing. |
| December 24, 2025 | La Banque Postale services were reported as restored, while recovery across the wider group remained gradual. A hacktivist group claimed responsibility. |
| Early January 2026 | La Poste’s later retrospective said the campaign continued until early January, beyond the initial Christmas-week outage. |

How large was the attack?
La Poste later called the event unprecedented for the group in intensity, duration and operational impact. Its account said the peak generated several billion connection attempts per second and that hundreds of cybersecurity and information-systems specialists were mobilized, with later descriptions referring to roughly 400 people involved in the response.
A separate industry report cited a peak of up to 2.5 billion packets per second. Packets, connection attempts, requests and traffic volume are different measurements, so these figures should not be combined into a single rate or treated as independently audited totals. The technical account is discussed by Le Monde Informatique.

La Poste said in its public statements that it had found no impact on customer data. Public reporting cited here did not establish theft of passwords, balances, payment-card details or other personal information. The most accurate description is therefore a major service-availability incident with no publicly reported customer-data impact at the time—not an independently proven guarantee that no system component could ever have been accessed.

Who was responsible?
The pro-Russian hacktivist group NoName057(16) claimed responsibility. French prosecutors reportedly suspected the group, but the public evidence cited in reporting did not conclusively establish that it carried out the attack. A responsibility claim is not proof: such groups can exaggerate, recycle incidents or claim attacks they did not conduct.
Nothing in the cited public sources establishes that the Russian government ordered or directly conducted the operation. The Associated Press reported the claim at AP News; Euronews covered the reported prosecutorial suspicion at Euronews. Switzerland’s National Cyber Security Centre noted that attribution was not confirmed in its situation report: BACS report (PDF).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Did postal deliveries stop?
No evidence supports saying that mail and parcel deliveries stopped nationwide. La Poste said delivery was being maintained, while online tracking, customer visibility and some parcel-related operational processes were disrupted. Physical execution and digital support systems are not the same thing: a carrier can continue moving a parcel even when the customer portal cannot display its status.

What about other French banks?
Le Monde reported a malfunction at the BPCE group, which includes Banque Populaire and Caisse d’Épargne, on the same Monday. The available reporting does not establish that BPCE’s problem was caused by the La Poste attack or that both incidents had a common perpetrator. Simultaneous outages should not automatically be treated as one coordinated campaign.
What the incident shows about resilience
Shared digital dependencies can widen an outage
Postal, banking, identity and document services may appear separate to customers while relying on common network, authentication, API, hosting or traffic-management layers. The precise architecture was not publicly disclosed, but the breadth of the outage demonstrates why those dependencies matter.
Fallback channels reduce customer harm
Branches, ATMs, card networks, SMS authentication and manual delivery procedures provided alternatives when apps and websites failed. Keeping those channels operational is a continuity decision, not merely a convenience feature.

Communications must separate what is known from what is not
Customers need distinct answers to three questions: which services are unavailable, whether transactions and deliveries continue, and whether data compromise has been detected. The La Poste episode also shows why incident updates should state restoration progress and avoid turning an unverified attribution claim into a fact.
Bottom line
The December 2025 event was a large, sustained attack on the availability of La Poste Group’s digital services, including La Banque Postale. Online access and tracking were heavily disrupted around Christmas, but branches, ATMs, payment flows and much of the physical postal operation continued. La Poste reported no customer-data impact, while responsibility remained publicly unconfirmed despite a NoName057(16) claim and reported prosecutorial suspicion.
