Short answer: X announced on March 28, 2024 that accounts followed by more than 2,500 paying Premium subscribers would receive Premium features free, while accounts above 5,000 would receive Premium+. Reports of the offer appearing on prominent accounts followed in early April 2024. However, X’s public help pages reviewed on August 18, 2026 describe Premium as an opt-in paid subscription and do not clearly document the 2,500/5,000 thresholds as a standing entitlement.
That means the historical offer is well documented, but readers should not assume that reaching a follower number automatically produces a free, permanent subscription today.
What X actually announced
The reported 2024 policy used a specific metric: verified subscriber followers. According to coverage of Elon Musk’s March 28, 2024 announcement, the thresholds were:
| Reported threshold | Benefit announced |
|---|---|
| More than 2,500 verified subscriber followers | Free X Premium features |
| More than 5,000 verified subscriber followers | Free X Premium+ features |
“Verified subscriber followers” meant followers who themselves subscribed to X’s paid Premium products. It did not mean the account’s total audience. The announcement was reported by TechCrunch, while reports of free access and restored blue checkmarks appearing on influential accounts emerged in early April 2024 from TechCrunch and the Associated Press.

Does the 2024 offer still apply in 2026?
X’s current public documentation does not clearly say that the 2,500- and 5,000-subscriber thresholds remain an ordinary, guaranteed route to complimentary access. Its current Premium page presents the product as a paid subscription, with account review for the blue checkmark and feature availability that can vary by country, platform, and account. X also reserves the right to change or remove features.
X could still grant complimentary subscriptions selectively or through an internal program, but the public help center does not establish the offer’s current eligibility, renewal, or cancellation rules. Treat any unexpected Premium access as discretionary unless X confirms the terms directly.
What counts as a “large following”?
The relevant audience is narrower than the number displayed on a profile. These measures are not interchangeable:
| Audience or activity measure | Was it the reported 2024 threshold? |
|---|---|
| Total followers | No |
| Followers with blue checkmarks | Not necessarily; the wording referred to paying subscribers |
| Followers with active X Premium or Premium+ subscriptions | Yes, according to the reported announcement |
| Post impressions | No; impressions are used in separate monetization rules |
| Creator subscribers | No; X Subscriptions are a different product |
An account with 100,000 ordinary followers therefore cannot infer that it met the announced test. X has not published a public account-level counter showing how many followers qualify as verified subscribers.

See the current feature and pricing documentation at X Premium. The U.S. web prices shown there when reviewed on August 18, 2026 were Basic at $3 per month or $32 per year, Premium at $8 per month or $84 per year, and Premium+ at $40 per month or $395 per year. Local taxes, currency, payment method, platform, and region can change the amount.
Why a blue checkmark does not answer the question
Under the current system, a blue checkmark generally indicates an active Premium or Premium+ subscription plus an eligibility review. It no longer reliably communicates the older idea that X independently determined an account to be notable, authentic, and active.
A checkmark is not proof that X granted the account a free plan, that the account owner paid personally, or that X verified the person’s identity. Optional ID verification is a separate process, and organization labels have separate meanings. X’s profile-label definitions are available at its profile-label policy.
How to check whether your account has complimentary access
- Open Premium: On the web, use the profile navigation and select Premium. On mobile, open the profile menu and choose Premium.
- Read the account card: X’s setup guidance shows the current tier and available management controls on this screen. See X’s Premium account-status instructions.
- Inspect billing: Look for a recurring charge or payment method in X, Apple’s App Store subscriptions, and Google Play subscriptions, depending on where the account was enrolled.
- Check receipts: Search email for X, Apple, or Google subscription receipts and note the billing entity, start date, renewal date, and amount.
- Contact support if the status conflicts: If Premium features appear but a charge starts unexpectedly, preserve the receipt and account-status details before contacting X.
Do not use the blue check alone as evidence that the account is free. A checkmark can reflect a paid subscription, complimentary access, organization status, or another account state.
Premium access is separate from creator monetization
A free or paid Premium account does not automatically qualify an account for payouts or Creator Subscriptions. X’s current rules add requirements such as:
- An active Premium, Premium Business, or Premium Organizations subscription for the relevant program
- A verified Stripe account and identity verification
- At least 2,000 active followers with Premium subscriptions for Creator Subscriptions
- At least 5 million organic impressions during the previous three months for relevant monetization programs
- A post within the previous 30 days
- Compliance with X’s monetization standards
The applicable policies are X’s Subscriptions policy and content-monetization standards. Complimentary access might satisfy the “active Premium” element if X recognizes it that way, but it does not replace the audience, impression, identity, Stripe, activity, or conduct requirements.
What can remove access or a checkmark?
- X can remove a blue checkmark at its discretion, including after policy violations or suspension.
- Changing a display name, profile photo, or username can trigger another review and temporarily remove the checkmark.
- Features and availability can change without preserving the original configuration.
- The duration, renewal, and cancellation terms of a complimentary grant are not clearly stated in the current public help pages.
- X generally does not offer subscription refunds except where legally required.
Payment channels matter: X’s purchaser terms cover web, Apple, and Google transactions. Review the purchaser terms before disputing an unexpected charge.
Common mistakes to avoid
Counting ordinary followers
Total reach is not the reported test. The 2024 wording referred to followers paying for Premium.
Treating the 2024 announcement as a current guarantee
The announcement and early rollout are historical facts. They do not, by themselves, establish a perpetual 2026 entitlement.
Confusing X Premium with X Subscriptions
Premium is the account owner’s subscription to X features. X Subscriptions are a separate product in which followers pay a creator for exclusive content; see X’s Subscriptions overview.

Buying followers to chase the threshold
Follower purchases cannot establish that those accounts have active Premium subscriptions and can create authenticity and policy problems. The historical rule was not a general invitation to inflate an audience.

X did offer complimentary Premium access in 2024 to accounts followed by more than 2,500 verified subscriber accounts, with Premium+ reported above 5,000. But X’s current public documentation reviewed in August 2026 does not clearly maintain those numbers as a standard, automatic benefit. Check the Premium management screen and all billing channels on your account; rely on X’s current account status, not follower totals or a blue checkmark, when deciding whether access is genuinely free.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do 2,500 normal followers qualify an account for free Premium?
No. The reported threshold referred to more than 2,500 followers with active paid Premium subscriptions, not 2,500 ordinary followers.
Do all blue-check followers count toward the threshold?
Not necessarily. The announcement used the narrower term “verified subscriber followers,” and a blue check alone does not prove how an account obtained its status.
Is Premium+ automatically free above 5,000 qualifying followers?
That was the reported 2024 threshold, but current public X documentation does not confirm it as a guaranteed 2026 entitlement.
Best Value
Does a free Premium grant last forever?
No duration or automatic-renewal promise for the complimentary offer is clearly published. Treat it as discretionary unless X gives your account specific terms.
Can I remove an unwanted blue checkmark?
A checkmark is tied to account status and review rather than a simple identity badge. Check the Premium management controls or contact X support; changing profile details can itself trigger a new review.
Does this offer work identically in every country?
No. X says pricing, features, and availability can vary by country, platform, payment method, and account.
What if X starts charging me unexpectedly?
Check X’s billing page and your Apple App Store or Google Play subscriptions, save the receipt, and contact X support. Do not assume that visible Premium features mean the account is complimentary.
