Chipotle first announced the avocado-processing cobot in July 2023 and announced its first restaurant test on September 16, 2024, at the Huntington Beach, California, restaurant at 20972 Magnolia St. As of August 2026, the company’s official materials confirm a limited pilot, not a chainwide rollout.
What Autocado actually is
Autocado is a collaborative robot, or “cobot,” developed by Chipotle with food-automation company Vebu. It handles a narrow part of guacamole preparation: cutting avocados, removing their pits and peeling them. It does not independently produce finished guacamole.

Chipotle introduced the prototype on July 12, 2023, after testing it at the company’s Cultivate Center in Irvine, California. The original announcement is available from Chipotle.
When and where did it debut?
The first in-restaurant debut was announced on September 16, 2024—not in 2026. The identified test restaurant was:
#1 Best Overall
- All in one tool splits, pits and slices avocados
- Stainless steel pitter removes pit with one quick twist
- Slicer lifts fruit from skin in seven perfect pieces
- Soft, comfortable non slip grip
- Top rack dishwasher safe
- Chipotle Huntington Beach
- 20972 Magnolia St., Huntington Beach, California
The 2024 announcement described the location as part of a limited restaurant test. It did not establish that the machine remains there today, and no reviewed official material confirms a nationwide rollout as of August 2026. Chipotle’s newsroom archive continues to identify the September 2024 release as the relevant Autocado debut announcement.
How the machine fits into the kitchen
- A crew member loads a case of unpeeled avocados.
- The avocados are oriented and fed into the processing unit.
- Autocado cuts the fruit, removes the pits and strips away the skins.
- The usable flesh is collected in a bowl.
- Employees transfer the flesh, add the remaining ingredients and hand-mash the guacamole.
Contemporaneous coverage reported that the system could handle up to approximately 25 pounds of unpeeled avocados at a time. That figure describes an operating batch or capacity claim, not a measured amount of finished guacamole.
Chipotle’s later sustainability summary describes the tested iteration as “size-agnostic,” meaning it could recognize different avocado sizes and adjust the processing. The summary is available in Chipotle’s 2024 Sustainability Executive Summary.
How fast is Autocado?
Chipotle said Autocado can fully flesh out an avocado in approximately 26 seconds in its 2024 launch materials. The company’s sustainability summary uses the less precise description “less than 30 seconds.” These are company-reported processing figures, not independent benchmarks.

- AVOCADO SLICER CUTTER TOOL is ideal for splitting , pitting, and slicing avocados safely.
- THE AVOCADO PITTER helps remove the pit easily with a simple twist, any size of Avocado core can be removed easily.
- HIGH QUALITY MATERIAL AVOCADO TOOL. Durable ABS with soft comfortable grip design. The stainless steel pitter helps move out the avocado corer easily.
- 3 in 1AVOCADO SLICER with soft, non-slip grip. Lightweight and portable
- TOP-RACK DISHWASHER SAFE, easy to clean
The number covers the machine’s avocado-processing cycle, not the entire guacamole workflow. Loading fruit, moving the flesh, seasoning, hand-mashing, cleaning and replenishing supplies still take time and require employees.
Is Autocado making the guacamole?
Not by itself. The machine performs repetitive mechanical preparation. Crew members remain responsible for transferring the avocado, adding ingredients, hand-mashing the mixture and applying Chipotle’s culinary standards. Calling it a “guacamole robot” is understandable shorthand, but it overstates what the documented system does.
Do not confuse Autocado with Chipotle’s other restaurant robot
| System | Primary task | Identified test location |
|---|---|---|
| Autocado | Cuts, cores and peels avocados before employees finish the guacamole | Huntington Beach, 20972 Magnolia St. |
| Augmented Makeline | Automated assembly of bowls and salads for digital orders | Corona del Mar, 3050 East Coast Highway |
Both tests were announced together, but they are separate devices. The Augmented Makeline does not make Autocado more widely available.
Is it in every Chipotle?
No verified official source supports that conclusion. Chipotle said it would use crew and customer feedback from the restaurant tests before deciding on broader pilot plans. A pilot location is not evidence that the machine is installed at most restaurants.

If seeing Autocado matters to you, do not make a special trip based only on older coverage. Check current Chipotle channels or contact a restaurant directly for a confirmed location; the original Huntington Beach test does not guarantee current operation.
Will it replace employees?
Chipotle’s stated purpose is to reallocate employee time from repetitive knife work to other preparation and guest-facing tasks. That is the company’s rationale for a cobot, not a verified long-term labor-market result.
The available announcements do not provide audited figures for jobs eliminated, labor hours saved per restaurant, staffing levels, wages or training changes. If the technology expands, it could still change task assignments, staffing models or required skills even while employees continue finishing the food.
Will the machine change the guacamole or its price?
No reviewed source announces a recipe change. Because employees still add ingredients and hand-mash the avocado, Autocado’s documented role is preparation rather than reformulation. There is no evidence here that it makes the guacamole better, worse, fresher or more consistent for customers.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Chipotle has—and has not—proved
Potential advantages
- Less repetitive knife work for crew members.
- Potentially lower exposure to avocado-cutting injuries.
- More time for other preparation and customer service.
- More uniform cutting, coring and peeling.
- Potentially faster handling of large avocado batches during busy periods.
These are intended or claimed benefits, not independently measured outcomes. The published material does not disclose cleaning times, maintenance frequency, downtime, repair costs, sanitation comparisons, audited waste reductions or full-shift throughput.
What still requires human judgment
- Loading and replenishing the machine.
- Moving the avocado flesh to the preparation area.
- Checking fruit quality.
- Adding ingredients and hand-mashing.
- Deciding whether the finished guacamole meets Chipotle’s standards.
What customers should expect
- Autocado does not change how you order at Chipotle.
- Your local restaurant may not have the machine.
- The documented process does not establish a different recipe or guaranteed taste.
- No separate Autocado charge has been announced in the reviewed materials.
- The machine’s 26-second figure is not a promise that an order will be ready in 26 seconds.
The bottom line on Chipotle’s “new” avocado machine
Autocado’s restaurant debut is genuine, but it happened in September 2024 at a limited Huntington Beach test site. The cobot takes over cutting, coring and peeling while employees still season and hand-mash the guacamole. As of August 2026, a broad rollout remains unverified, so customers should treat Autocado as a restaurant-automation pilot—not a machine they can expect to find at every Chipotle.
