Microsoft Money Plus Sunset Deluxe is discontinued. Microsoft no longer hosts a current official installer. A preserved copy may be available through the Internet Archive, but that is a third-party historical archive—not a Microsoft-supported download—and it carries the normal risks of any old installer. Use Sunset primarily to open or maintain legacy records offline, not for modern bank synchronization.
Microsoft’s Q&A moderators say Money was discontinued in 2009 and its official download was removed (Microsoft Q&A). The Sunset edition is commonly reported as not requiring activation, but that does not apply automatically to older retail editions such as Money 2005 or Money 2007.
What Microsoft Money Plus Sunset Deluxe is
Microsoft Money Plus Deluxe was a discontinued Windows desktop personal-finance program. Money Plus Sunset Deluxe was Microsoft’s final free Sunset release for certain expired Money Plus editions after Microsoft ended its online services.
Do not confuse it with Money in Excel, which ended on June 30, 2023, or the separate Microsoft Store app called Money Plus – Budget & Expense Tracker. Neither is the legacy Money desktop database program.

Is there still an official download?
No current official Microsoft download should be promised. Microsoft removed the former Download Center listing. An Internet Archive preservation of that historical installer may exist, as referenced in Microsoft’s Q&A discussion, but the archive is not Microsoft support, a current distribution channel, or a security guarantee.
What to avoid
- Random “full version,” serial-key, crack, or activator sites
- Installers bundled with download managers, browser extensions, or unrelated software
- Modified binaries or packages that ask you to bypass activation
- Any site claiming Microsoft currently supports or endorses the download
Scan any archived file with current antivirus software and, where practical, a second malware-scanning service. Do not describe an archive copy as guaranteed safe.

What works—and what does not—in 2026
| Function | Current expectation |
|---|---|
| Manual transaction entry | Usually usable as an offline ledger |
| Historical reports | May work if the data file opens correctly |
| Local budgets and categories | May work locally |
| Opening and backing up .mny files | Possible, subject to version, region, permissions, and file condition |
| Bank synchronization | Not supported |
| Automatic transaction downloads | Not supported |
| Automatic stock quotes | Not supported |
| Microsoft-hosted services and technical support | Unavailable |
| Security and compatibility updates | None expected |
You can still download statements manually from a bank as CSV, QIF, or another format and enter or import them if the format is compatible. Modern institutions are not required to provide Money-compatible files, and you should not connect the program to live banking services or enter bank credentials into it.
Cautious installation on a new PC
- Preserve your data first. Copy every
.mnyfile and existing Money backup to an external drive or other separate location. Keep the originals unchanged. - Create a recovery point. Make a Windows restore point or full system backup before installing old software.
- Obtain a complete archival package. Use a reputable preservation source, not a repacked installer, crack, or activator.
- Scan before opening. Record the filename and size. Compare any checksum or original file listing supplied by the archive.
- Extract all files. A missing
setup.execan indicate an incomplete package and cause installation failure (Microsoft troubleshooting discussion). - Run setup normally. If Windows blocks it, right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator. Do not broadly disable antivirus protection.
- Try compatibility settings only if needed. For some Windows 11 installation errors, Microsoft community guidance suggests Properties → Compatibility → Windows 7. This is troubleshooting advice, not a support guarantee.
- Open a copy of your data. Use Money’s open or restore workflow rather than overwriting the original. For a backup, use File → Restore Backup.
- Verify the records. Check balances, transaction history, categories, scheduled bills, payees, investments, and reports. Reconcile at least one account with an independent statement.
- Make a new backup. Keep both the untouched pre-installation copy and a fresh backup made after the file opens successfully.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 compatibility
Sunset may run on some Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems, according to community reports, but neither the old application nor the installation combination is officially supported (Microsoft Q&A). Results can vary with Windows edition, 32-bit versus 64-bit environment, User Account Control, regional Money edition, permissions, file location, and leftover components from an earlier installation.
Rank #3
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; Microsoft no longer provides normal security updates or technical support after that date (Microsoft Support). Running obsolete financial software on an unsupported operating system increases risk. Keep the computer protected and consider an isolated, offline environment when the program is needed only for historical access.
If an old .mny file will not open
Sunset cannot be expected to open every Money file. Problems may result from an incompatible older version, a Canadian, UK, or other regional edition, password or Windows Live ID association, corruption, incomplete installation, or permissions in a protected, read-only, or cloud-synchronized folder.

- Work only from a copy and confirm the extension and file location.
- Try restoring an earlier Money backup.
- Install the closest matching regional or edition version legally available to you before attempting another conversion.
- Use Sunset only after preserving the original.
- Export data to a portable format where possible.
- If records are irreplaceable, seek professional data-recovery or legacy-software assistance instead of repeatedly converting the only copy.
Older retail Money editions may request activation or fail when their former activation services are unavailable. A Sunset installer’s no-activation behavior does not make every legacy Money edition permanent or interchangeable.
Security and privacy precautions
- Treat the program as obsolete software with no modern security maintenance.
- Do not grant unnecessary network access or use it for online banking.
- Keep Windows and antivirus protection current, even if Money itself is not.
- Store Money files in encrypted or access-controlled backups; they can contain detailed financial history.
- Use the application as an offline archive or manual ledger rather than a connected financial hub.
Should you keep using Sunset?
It can make sense when you
- Need to inspect historical records or preserve a familiar offline workflow
- Have a compatible
.mnyfile - Accept manual transaction entry and independent backups
- Can control the installation environment and verify your records
Choose a replacement when you need
- Automatic bank feeds, mobile access, or cloud synchronization
- Security updates and vendor support
- Current investment, tax, business, or shared-household integrations
- A dependable workflow that does not rely on unsupported software
Alternatives for migration
Quicken Classic for Windows
Quicken says its Windows product can import Microsoft Money 2008 and 2009 files on Deluxe and higher tiers (Quicken product comparison). It is a supported paid product, not a free archive, and conversion success still depends on the exact Money edition, region, and file condition. Promotional prices change, so check the current plan before purchasing.

Best Value
Quicken Simplifi
Simplifi is cloud- and mobile-oriented rather than a direct local .mny replacement. Quicken’s help center describes CSV imports using its template and notes that offers and subscription terms apply (Quicken Simplifi help). It suits readers seeking current account tracking, but not those requiring a fully offline archive or one-click preservation of Money reports.
Free desktop software
Free and open-source desktop alternatives exist, but direct Microsoft Money support and conversion quality vary by product and release. Test with a copy, export what you can, and verify balances before abandoning the original files.
Quick Recap
Final safety checklist
- Original
.mnyfiles and backups are stored separately. - The installer is complete, scanned, and unmodified.
- No live bank credentials were entered.
- A copied file opened and key balances were checked.
- A fresh backup was created after successful opening or conversion.
- Migration to replacement software was tested before retiring the old setup.
