Amazon layoffs 2025

Navigating the AWS Layoffs of 2025: What Employees Need to Know in 2026

AWS employees were affected by targeted team reductions in July 2025 and Amazon’s broader corporate restructuring announced on October 28, 2025. Amazon said the October action covered approximately 14,000 corporate roles company-wide, not 14,000 AWS jobs. A further announcement on January 28, 2026 described approximately 16,000 additional Amazon role reductions.

Your outcome depends on your individual notice, country, employment type, benefits, and—if applicable—immigration status. AWS revenue growth does not guarantee that every team or role is protected.

What happened, and when?

Date What is confirmed What it does not establish
July 2025 Amazon confirmed role eliminations across particular AWS teams, according to Bloomberg Law. No complete public AWS headcount, team, level, location, or job-family breakdown.
October 28, 2025 Amazon announced approximately 14,000 corporate-role reductions across the company. AWS was among affected organizations in contemporaneous reporting. Amazon described fewer layers, more ownership, less bureaucracy, and resource shifts toward major priorities. See Amazon’s announcement. The 14,000 figure is an Amazon-wide corporate total, not an AWS total.
January 28, 2026 Amazon announced approximately 16,000 additional role reductions in a later company-wide action; see Amazon’s January update. These later reductions should not automatically be merged into a 2025 AWS count.

An earlier media report discussed a possible reduction of up to 30,000 corporate jobs. Amazon’s later official October announcement stated approximately 14,000 roles, so the larger figure should not be presented as the confirmed final total.

Were AWS employees specifically affected?

Yes, but not uniformly. July reporting described cuts in particular AWS teams, and AWS was included in reporting about the October corporate restructuring. Amazon did not publish a comprehensive AWS-specific total or a list showing that every AWS organization was affected. Anonymous spreadsheets and social-media lists may provide leads, but they are not reliable evidence of who was selected.

Why could layoffs happen while AWS was growing?

Amazon reported AWS operating income of $11.4 billion in the third quarter of 2025, up from $10.4 billion in the third quarter of 2024, and $12.5 billion in the fourth quarter of 2025, up from $10.6 billion a year earlier. The figures appear in the company’s Q3 release and Q4 release.

Growth and reductions can coexist when a company reorganizes management layers, changes skill mix, consolidates overlapping work, moves investment toward data centers, chips, security or strategic AI services, or automates tasks. Amazon’s formal October explanation focused on organizational simplification and resource allocation. CEO Andy Jassy separately said in June 2025 that generative AI could mean fewer people doing some existing jobs and more people doing other work, as reported by The Associated Press. That supports a mixed explanation—not a claim that AI replaced every affected employee or was the sole cause.

What happens after you receive notice?

1. Read the individual notification

Amazon’s public announcement is not your employment agreement. Confirm your last working day, separation date, work status during the notice period, pay continuation, benefits, equity treatment, internal-application deadline, and designated HR contacts.

2. Use the internal-search period correctly

Amazon said most affected employees would generally have 90 days to seek another internal role, with timing subject to local law and individual circumstances. This is not necessarily 90 days of unrestricted employment, and an application is not a placement guarantee. Verify whether a prospective role changes your level, location, schedule, compensation, equity vesting, or immigration arrangement.

3. Decide whether to transfer, separate, or pursue both paths

An internal move may preserve sponsorship, tenure, benefits, and institutional knowledge. An external search may be better if internal opportunities are narrow, repeated restructuring is a concern, or another employer offers stronger career, location, compensation, or immigration certainty. Unless your agreement says otherwise, pursue both options before the deadline.

4. Identify transition support

Amazon said support may include severance, outplacement services, and health-insurance benefits. The company has not published one universal package for every country, level, employment category, or business unit.

Your first 72 hours

  • Save legally permissible personal copies of pay statements, equity statements, benefits summaries, performance records, certifications, and employment dates.
  • Do not copy customer data, source code, security information, internal roadmaps, proprietary pricing, confidential employee records, or unrelated internal communications.
  • Ask HR in writing for the separation date, salary-continuation or severance terms, bonus and commission treatment, equity vesting, benefit end dates, internal-role deadline, outplacement access, and contact details for MyHR and the Employee Assistance Program.
  • Contact trusted references before system access ends and update your résumé and LinkedIn profile with non-confidential accomplishments.
  • Review household cash flow, emergency savings, debt payments, and health-insurance replacement options.
  • File for unemployment promptly once eligible; state and local rules differ.

Checklist for pay, equity, taxes, and benefits

  • Salary and severance: Confirm the formula, payment dates, tax withholding, and whether salary continuation requires compliance with conditions.
  • RSUs and other equity: Check vested and unvested amounts, vesting dates during any notice period, settlement timing, and tax withholding. Do not treat unvested RSUs as guaranteed pay.
  • Bonus, commission, and sign-on terms: Review plan documents and any repayment clauses; an internal transfer may alter eligibility.
  • Health coverage: Confirm the actual end date for medical, dental, vision, life, disability, HSA, and FSA benefits. Compare COBRA or local continuation, Marketplace coverage, and a spouse’s plan. Amazon’s announcement does not establish a uniform duration.
  • Retirement plans: Ask about 401(k), HSA, FSA, rollover, and outstanding-loan treatment.
  • Paid time off and relocation: Determine whether unused leave is paid under the law governing your employment and whether repatriation or relocation obligations apply.

Amazon’s 2025 Form 10-K reported $2.7 billion in estimated severance costs primarily related to planned role eliminations, including $1.8 billion recorded in the third quarter. That accounting figure does not determine an individual employee’s package: Form 10-K.

Visa holders and international employees

Not legal advice: immigration consequences require individualized counsel. A layoff can affect work authorization, grace periods, dependents, relocation, and the timing of a new employer’s petition. The relevant date may be the last day of authorized employment rather than the date you receive notice, and salary continuation does not automatically extend work authorization.

  • Ask Amazon’s immigration team for your written status and deadline information.
  • Consult an independent immigration attorney promptly, before resigning, declining an internal role, or accepting outside work.
  • Provide the attorney your visa category, country, notice date, final paid-work date, dependents, and any internal-transfer or relocation offer.
  • Do not rely on another employee’s timeline or a generalized “90-day” claim.

A September 2025 letter from U.S. senators questioned Amazon about AWS layoffs and H-1B filings, but the letter is not a determination of any employee’s rights or Amazon’s final response: the Senate letter.

How to evaluate an internal transfer

  • Compare level, base pay, bonus, equity, vesting schedule, location, work authorization, schedule, and relocation costs in writing.
  • Ask whether your current separation date is cancelled upon accepting the role and whether any probation or performance conditions apply.
  • Assess the new team’s funding, product priority, manager, staffing plan, and exposure to the same restructuring risk.
  • Obtain confirmation of benefits and tenure treatment from HR rather than relying on a recruiter’s informal statement.

WARN notices: useful, but limited

Federal and state WARN filings are location-specific notices, not a complete global employee list. A filing can show a facility, job count, notice date, and expected separation dates, but it may cover several job categories, subsidiaries, or employers. State law can add requirements beyond federal WARN, and the absence of a notice does not prove that no layoffs occurred.

A Washington filing reproduced by GeekWire lists separation dates extending into 2026 and says employees who accept internal transfers before separation may avoid the separation process. Treat that as a filing-specific example, not a universal Amazon rule: Washington WARN filing. California maintains its own report at the California WARN page.

Contractors, vendors, candidates, and customers

Contractors and vendors

Contractors may work for a staffing or consulting company and therefore may have different notice, severance, benefits, and unemployment rules. Contact your legal employer and review your contract; do not assume Amazon’s employee process applies.

Candidates

Amazon can reduce roles in some areas while hiring in others. Ask recruiters whether the requisition is approved, the hiring manager is unchanged, and the role’s location, level, and start date are firm. Keep interviewing elsewhere until you have a written offer.

Customers

Layoffs alone do not prove that AWS reliability, support, or service quality will decline. Customers should rely on contractual commitments, service-health communications, account-team guidance, and their own continuity plans rather than inferring service performance from headcount news.

What remains unknown

  • A verified 2025 AWS-only headcount reduction.
  • A complete team-by-team, level-by-level, location-by-location, or job-family map.
  • A universal severance formula or health-benefit duration.
  • A single global rule for internal-search timing.
  • The full relationship between the July AWS reductions, October restructuring, and later January 2026 company-wide cuts.

Treat your individualized notice and applicable local law as authoritative. Preserve your records lawfully, start internal and external searches in parallel, and obtain professional tax, benefits, severance, or immigration advice before making an irreversible decision.
