Residex acquired Seattle health-tech startup Kevala around August 18, 2025, according to GeekWire and a related Pioneer Square Labs post. Financial terms were not disclosed. The strategic aim is to combine Kevala’s Quin workforce-management software with Residex’s senior-care clinical platform.
What happened in the Kevala-Residex deal?
Residex, sometimes styled Residex.AI, acquired Kevala in an announcement published August 18, 2025. Pioneer Square Labs’ associated feed entry is dated August 19. The available announcements do not establish the legal closing date, purchase price, transaction structure, or whether Kevala remains a separate company or brand.
They also do not say whether Residex bought Kevala’s entire operating company, selected technology, or particular assets and employees. Coverage describes Kevala as Seattle-based, while available sources do not provide a definitive current headquarters for Residex; one report calls it a Denver company and a commercial database lists Circle Pines, Minnesota.
What Kevala’s Quin platform does
Kevala built Quin for healthcare-facility workforce operations. Its reported functions include:

- Scheduling workers for shifts.
- Organizing a facility’s labor pool.
- Tracking caregiver credentials.
- Helping operators assemble a qualified, on-demand care workforce.
Pioneer Square Labs describes Kevala’s broader mission as helping long-term-care organizations recruit, onboard, manage and schedule care teams amid labor shortages and regulatory complexity. Secondary coverage has used terms such as predictive scheduling, but the available announcements do not independently document Quin’s technical methods or confirm every such feature.
What Residex already provides
Residex’s software is described as covering senior-care clinical and operational workflows, including:
- Electronic or resident health records.
- Medication administration.
- Care planning.
- Assessments.
- Clinical documentation.
A commercial database also lists billing and marketing capabilities, but that information is secondary and may not reflect the current product.

Why workforce management matters to senior-care operators
Senior-care facilities must match available people to shifts while accounting for credentials, availability, schedules and residents’ care requirements. Residex already holds information generated by clinical and resident-care workflows; Kevala adds software focused on the workforce side.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA connected system could give managers better visibility into coverage gaps and reduce manual coordination. That is the business rationale for the acquisition, not evidence that the combination has already reduced agency spending, filled more shifts or improved resident outcomes. No independently audited post-acquisition results have been disclosed.
How AI fits—and what it does not prove
The companies frame AI as a way to improve senior-care operations and workforce management. Residex’s platform is described as using AI in areas such as records, medication administration, care planning, assessments and clinical documentation, while Kevala contributes workforce intelligence and staffing optimization.

- Used Book in Good Condition
Those descriptions can encompass different technologies:
- Automation: routine scheduling or credential checks.
- Optimization: matching workers, shifts and requirements.
- Clinical decision support: a more sensitive use that would require clearer evidence and governance.
- Administrative software: systems that still handle sensitive health and employment information.
The available reporting does not identify the models, training data, evaluation methods or level of automation. It does not show that the combined product diagnoses patients, makes unsupervised clinical decisions or replaces nurses and caregivers. Claims about a “fully connected platform” or improved quality of life should be treated as company aspirations rather than measured outcomes.
What the companies and founders said
Kevala co-founder and CEO Todd Owens characterized the transaction as validation of the company’s effort to apply AI to workforce-management problems and described the combination as joining Kevala’s workforce intelligence with Residex’s clinical expertise.

Residex CEO Chris Poelma was quoted in secondary coverage as saying Kevala’s workforce technology complements Residex’s clinical platform. That statement should be understood as an attributed company view, not independent evidence of product performance.
Kevala’s startup background
Kevala spun out of Pioneer Square Labs in 2020. Reported financing milestones were:
| Milestone | Reported detail |
|---|---|
| January 2021 | $4 million raised |
| February 2022 | $12.1 million raised |
| Total capital | $21 million reported cumulatively; this is not the acquisition price or a valuation |
| Headcount | 28 employees as of April 2025 |
Pioneer Square Labs lists Costanoa Ventures, High Alpha, PSL Ventures and Vulcan Capital among Kevala’s investors. Owens previously held leadership roles at TalentWise, acquired by Sterling Talent Solutions; Appuri, acquired by DocuSign; and Azuqua, acquired by Okta. Those earlier transactions do not establish the terms or likely outcome of the Kevala deal.

Potential advantages of the combination
- Broader workflow coverage: clinical documentation and workforce operations could sit closer together.
- Operational visibility: staffing data may help operators see coverage needs alongside resident-care requirements.
- Fewer vendors: facilities could eventually manage more functions through one supplier.
- Commercial reach: Residex may be able to introduce Quin to its customers, while Kevala customers could gain access to wider clinical tools.
- Competitive positioning: a combined clinical-and-workforce offering could differentiate Residex in senior-care software.
These are plausible strategic benefits, not confirmed post-acquisition results.
Risks and trade-offs for customers
Integration and migration
Connecting schedules, credentials, resident records, medication workflows and clinical documentation can create data-mapping errors, duplicate records, interoperability problems, implementation delays and customer migration costs.
Privacy and security
The combined environment may contain protected health information and employee credentials. Buyers should ask about role-based access, audit logs, retention, facility and vendor responsibilities, applicable HIPAA obligations, incident response and how algorithms can access customer data. The acquisition coverage does not answer those questions.
AI reliability and human control
Recommendations can be wrong when availability, credentials or care requirements are incomplete. Facilities should determine whether managers can override schedules, inspect the reason for a recommendation, audit decisions and retain human approval for high-impact staffing choices.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Vendor dependence
A broader suite may simplify procurement while increasing lock-in. Contract terms should address data export, APIs, service levels, termination, future price changes and continued interoperability with other systems.
Questions senior-care operators should ask
- Is Quin still sold as a standalone product, or is it bundled with Residex?
- What happens to existing Kevala contracts, pricing, support and implementation commitments?
- Can the system integrate with the facility’s EHR, eMAR, payroll, timekeeping and recruiting tools?
- Does credential verification run automatically, and how often is it refreshed?
- Can managers account for acuity, staffing ratios, overtime, union rules and worker availability?
- Can employees correct availability or credential errors themselves?
- What happens during an outage, and can staff access schedules from mobile devices?
- Are recommendations explainable, auditable and subject to manual approval?
- Can customers export operational and resident-related data if they leave?
What remains undisclosed
- Purchase price and whether consideration was cash, stock, debt or an earn-out.
- Advisers and transaction structure.
- Employee retention, layoffs and Owens’s post-deal role.
- Kevala and Residex customer counts, revenue and market share.
- Integration timetable and technical roadmap.
- Whether Quin’s branding, availability or pricing will change.
- Data-migration, interoperability, security and privacy arrangements.
- Any regulatory or antitrust filings.
- Measured effects on staffing, costs, caregiver retention or resident care.
Bottom line for investors and operators
The Kevala acquisition is a strategic expansion: Residex is adding workforce scheduling, labor-pool organization and credential management to a senior-care software business centered on clinical and resident information. The reported $21 million raised by Kevala describes cumulative startup funding, not what Residex paid. Until the companies disclose integration details and customer results, the deal should be viewed as a prospective platform combination—not proof of an AI transformation or better resident outcomes.
