AWS said notifications for impacted employees in the United States and Canada were complete, with the vast majority sent by January 28, 2026. CRN reported that AWS executives Prasad Kalyanaraman and Colleen Aubrey described the action as an organizational redesign intended to improve speed, ownership, experimentation and customer focus.
What happened
Amazon cut approximately 16,000 corporate jobs worldwide in a restructuring that included some AWS employees. Neither Amazon nor AWS has published an AWS-specific headcount, percentage or business-unit breakdown.
The U.S. and Canada update concerns the notification process. AWS said affected employees in those countries had been notified; it did not say the reductions were limited to North America, nor did it establish that every termination was effective on the notification date.

What AWS told employees
The internal memo framed the cuts as part of preparing AWS for the future while remaining nimble and focused on customers. Its stated goals included clearer ownership, faster decisions and more experimentation, with AWS aspiring to operate like “the world’s largest startup.” AWS did not publish a detailed list of eliminated teams or positions.
What is known about the affected work
Washington filings provide the clearest public job-level evidence, but they cover Amazon broadly rather than AWS alone. Reported roles included:

Those categories show that technical and professional workers were substantially represented in the Washington reduction. They do not prove that every listed role belonged to AWS, that a function disappeared, or that technical employees were the only people affected.
Washington figures are regional evidence
Washington’s January 2026 economic report recorded 2,303 Amazon workers affected across various locations on January 26. CRN described approximately 2,200 Washington employees using a Washington WARN filing. The difference likely reflects filing scope or reporting methods, not necessarily conflicting events. The Washington total should be treated as a regional view of Amazon’s restructuring, not an AWS-wide count.

Why layoffs occurred while AWS was growing
The cuts were not presented as evidence of collapsing cloud demand. CRN’s earnings coverage reported AWS fourth-quarter 2025 sales of $35.6 billion, up 24% year over year, with an operating margin of about 35%. Full-year 2025 AWS sales were reported at $128.7 billion and operating income at $45.6 billion.
At the same time, CEO Andy Jassy said Amazon expected about $200 billion in 2026 capital expenditures, much of it for AWS and artificial-intelligence infrastructure. A company can reduce corporate headcount while increasing spending on data centers, chips, servers and automation. The public record does not show that AI directly replaced each person whose role was eliminated.

- Whether reductions were concentrated in infrastructure, applied AI, sales, support or other AWS groups
- The final termination date for every notified employee
- Total severance expense and whether further AWS reductions will occur
Employees may work for AWS operationally while being legally employed by a different Amazon entity. WARN filings also may not capture every remote worker, smaller group, exempt situation, contractor or vendor.

What affected employees should check
Before signing a separation document, review the package for:
- The legal employer and effective termination date
- Severance amount, payment schedule and conditions
- Benefits continuation and end dates
- Vested and unvested equity treatment
- Bonus, commission and vacation-pay provisions
- Immigration or work-authorization consequences
- Confidentiality, nonsolicitation, noncompete and release language
- The deadline for signing and any revocation period
- Eligibility for unemployment benefits and internal redeployment
U.S. rights depend on state law, WARN coverage, company policy and the agreement. Canadian obligations vary by province and may involve statutory, contractual and common-law notice. A Canadian employee considering a release can seek advice from counsel qualified in the relevant province; Monkhouse Law’s AWS layoff guidance is one example of jurisdiction-specific information, not a substitute for individual advice.
Finding another role
Former employees can check Amazon Jobs, LinkedIn Jobs and Indeed while also contacting former colleagues and recruiters. A posting that remains online does not prove a team was unaffected; listings can be stale, duplicated or assigned to another location.
When rewriting a résumé, translate AWS work into outcomes such as reliability improvements, cost reduction, security results, system scale, customer adoption or revenue. Automated tools such as Resume Worded can provide suggestions, but their scores are advisory and should not replace human review or tailoring.

AWS employees were included in Amazon’s broader restructuring, but there is no confirmed AWS-only number. The strongest public facts are the approximately 16,000 Amazon-wide corporate reduction, completed U.S. and Canadian notification process, and Washington evidence of affected technical and professional roles. AWS remained a fast-growing, profitable business investing heavily in cloud and AI capacity, so the layoffs are best understood as a restructuring of organization and costs—not proof that AWS eliminated 16,000 jobs or that AI directly replaced every affected worker.
