Best MacBook Air Accessories in 2026: What to Buy for Travel, Work and Storage

The 2026 MacBook Air is Apple’s M5 model, sold in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes. It has two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, MagSafe 3, a headphone jack and support for up to two external displays. The right accessories depend on the problem you are solving: more ports, a permanent desk connection, extra storage, protection or better ergonomics. Check your Air’s exact generation and screen size before ordering anything.

Apple’s M5 specifications, including battery-life figures, are based on Apple testing rather than independent real-world use. See the M5 announcement and 15-inch M5 specifications.

Quick picks

Need Best accessory type Why it makes sense Main caution
More ports on the move Compact USB-C hub HDMI, USB-A, card readers and pass-through charging in one small device “Dual HDMI” may mirror one display or require DisplayLink software
One-cable desk setup Thunderbolt 4 dock Ethernet, displays, storage and peripherals through one connection More expensive and less portable than a hub
Travel charging 65W-class multi-port GaN charger Can charge the Air and other devices from one compact brick Output may fall when several ports are used
Large files and backups USB4 or Thunderbolt external SSD Fast portable storage for projects and Time Machine Peak speed is not sustained speed; drives can heat up
Daily carrying Padded sleeve Protection without permanent bulk 13-inch and 15-inch sleeves are not interchangeable
Raised desktop screen Adjustable stand plus keyboard and mouse Improves viewing height when used as a desktop The built-in keyboard is awkward to use on a tall stand

Check compatibility before buying

Identify the Mac under Apple menu → About This Mac, then confirm its technical specifications using Apple’s port-identification guidance. M5 and M4 Air models have the modern two-port Thunderbolt design and MagSafe 3. M1 Air models charge through USB-C and do not have MagSafe 3. Intel models can differ in charging, ports and display behavior.

A case or hard shell marked only “MacBook Air” is not enough. Match the 13-inch or 15-inch chassis and the correct generation. M2, M3, M4 and M5 shells may not fit older bodies, and a dock’s advertised display capability does not override the limits of the particular Mac.

USB-C hub or Thunderbolt 4 dock?

Characteristic USB-C hub Thunderbolt 4 dock
Best for Travel, students and occasional peripherals Permanent desk installations
Ports Usually HDMI, USB-A, USB-C data and card readers More USB-C and USB-A, Ethernet, audio, card readers and display outputs
Bandwidth Often ordinary USB 3.x; verify the actual rating Thunderbolt 4 bandwidth and compatibility
Displays Often one native display; “dual” claims need scrutiny Still model- and architecture-dependent; verify independent extended displays
Power Pass-through charging, often below the charger’s headline wattage Desk power delivery, usually with a separate power brick
Portability Small and bus-powered Desktop-oriented and heavier

Choose a hub when

A 5-in-1 or 7-in-1 hub is sufficient for an HDMI monitor, keyboard, mouse, USB drive and occasional card imports. Look for the HDMI resolution and refresh rate, USB-A speed, full-size SD support, Ethernet rating, pass-through wattage and whether the USB-C socket is data-only.

Choose a dock when

A Thunderbolt 4 dock is justified for a fixed workstation with Ethernet, high-speed storage, audio and a monitor connected by one cable. Anker, CalDigit, OWC, Kensington and Plugable all sell Thunderbolt docks; compare the exact model’s ports, power delivery and display method. A Thunderbolt 5 dock can work, but is usually unnecessary for an Air unless you expect to reuse it with a future Thunderbolt 5 MacBook Pro. Examples of dock ranges include Anker, CalDigit and OWC.

Charging accessories and cables

Apple lists 30W USB-C, 35W dual-port, 67W and 70W adapter options for current Air models, and supports both MagSafe 3 and USB-C charging. The official guidance is at Apple’s power-adapter page. The included charger is worth keeping; buy another for a second room or travel rather than replacing it automatically.

Anker USB C Hub, 5-in-1 USBC to HDMI Splitter with 4K Display
  • 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

A 65W-class GaN charger is a practical travel choice for an Air, phone and tablet. Nomad’s 65W Slim Power Adapter was listed at $55 in WIRED’s April 2026 update, but that is an observed price, not a permanent MSRP; confirm current U.S. pricing at Nomad. Apple’s 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W maximum output was listed at $39 in the U.S. on August 18, 2026, with cable sold separately: Apple Store.

A 100W charger does not force 100W into the Air. The Mac negotiates the power it can use, so extra capacity mainly helps when charging other devices. Cable labels matter: a basic USB-C charging cable may have limited data speed, while USB 3.x, USB4 and Thunderbolt 4 cables offer progressively more capability for storage, docks and displays.

External SSD: the useful storage upgrade

An external SSD is valuable for photo and video projects, game or media libraries, moving files between Macs and local backups. Choose between a portable USB-C SSD for value and a USB4 or Thunderbolt SSD for active editing. Compare sustained performance, thermal throttling, included cable, ruggedness, warranty and encryption—not just the advertised peak sequential speed.

  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
  • Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

The Air’s internal storage is not user-upgradable. External storage expands capacity but does not replace internal space for macOS, applications or every workflow. For inexpensive bulk storage and backups, conventional portable drives can be appropriate; for active work, consider faster models from categories such as WD portable storage and SanDisk portable SSDs.

Mouse and keyboard

Mouse

WIRED’s April 2026 update listed the Logitech MX Master 4 at $120 and positioned it as an ergonomic productivity mouse. Its large shape, programmable controls and scrolling are useful for long desk sessions, especially when the Air is raised on a stand. It is expensive and less portable than a travel mouse; hand size and grip determine whether it feels comfortable. See the official MX Master 4 page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For travel, consider an MX Anywhere-sized mouse or another compact Bluetooth model. Apple’s Magic Mouse offers familiar integration but is not automatically the most comfortable choice. Many users will prefer the Air’s trackpad for gestures and casual work.

Keyboard

The Keychron B2 Pro is a low-profile, laptop-like option. WIRED listed it at $40 through Amazon in April 2026; verify current availability and macOS layout at Keychron. Apple’s Magic Keyboard is the simplest ecosystem match and is sold through Apple’s Mac accessories store, but Apple branding does not guarantee better value or ergonomics.

Stands and desk ergonomics

An adjustable stand can raise the display to a more comfortable viewing height, but it should be paired with an external keyboard and pointing device. Check stability, height range, ventilation clearance and platform width; the 15-inch Air needs more support than the 13-inch model. A vertical stand is for closed-lid desktop use, not normal laptop operation.

Native Union’s laptop stand appeared in WIRED’s 2026 roundup. Treat that as an editorial recommendation rather than proof of universal comfort; desk height, viewing distance and body dimensions matter.

You can instantly browse photos on your USB C smartphone laptop anytime, anywhere, quickly and easily, and download hundreds of photos to your Macbook laptop in seconds.

Protection: sleeve first, shell only when justified

A padded sleeve is the default travel accessory. Match the exact screen size and chassis generation, and look for interior padding, water resistance, protected zippers and enough room for a thin shell if you use one. Native Union’s Stow Slim sleeve and Bellroy laptop bags were included in WIRED’s 2026 coverage; see Native Union and Bellroy.

A hard shell protects against scratches while the laptop is in use, but can add weight, trap dust, interfere with the hinge or create pressure points. Buy only a model explicitly sized for your Air generation. Screen protectors and keyboard covers are optional: matte films can reduce reflections but may affect sharpness, contrast and fit around the camera area.

External displays, headphones and webcams

The M5 Air supports up to two external displays according to Apple, but the exact connection and lid-open or lid-closed behavior must be checked for the model and dock. A native USB-C or Thunderbolt display can simplify cabling; evaluate resolution, refresh rate, USB-C power delivery, hub ports, scaling, color accuracy and input switching. A 4K monitor can be preferable to a larger low-resolution panel for text-heavy work.

The M5 Air’s 12MP Center Stage camera means many users do not need a webcam. A separate camera is worthwhile for a fixed monitor installation, streaming, low-light work or a multi-camera setup. The headphone jack means wired headphones remain practical; noise-cancelling headphones are a situational upgrade for travel, shared offices and calls. The built-in speakers are adequate for ordinary use.
