Apple temporarily increased estimated iPhone trade-in values in nine reported markets—the United States, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and China—in a promotion announced May 23, 2025. The additional credit toward a new iPhone was available through June 18, 2025, so it is no longer claimable. In the United States, the advertised maximum increases were generally $5 to $30, and the figures were ceilings for eligible devices rather than guaranteed payouts. MacRumors reported the promotion and U.S. figures.
Which countries were included?
Contemporary coverage identified these nine participating markets:
- United States
- Canada
- Australia
- France
- Germany
- Italy
- Spain
- United Kingdom
- China
That list does not establish identical terms for every Apple Store, reseller, device category or local trade-in partner. Apple publishes separate country and regional rules, so a value in one currency cannot be converted directly into another market’s payout. Check the applicable Apple regional trade-in terms.

The table below reproduces the promotional maximum estimates reported for the United States. Each amount assumes the phone meets Apple’s eligibility and condition requirements; it is not a guaranteed payment.

Extra credit is not automatically cash
Apple described the promotion as additional trade-in credit toward a new iPhone. Depending on country and transaction method, Apple Trade In can instead issue an Apple Gift Card; the available route and terms vary. It should not be described as a universal cash-price increase. See Apple’s Trade In program for the local options. An online forum report suggested that some gift-card estimates differed from purchase-credit estimates, but that user account is anecdotal rather than established Apple policy.
How Apple’s trade-in valuation works
Apple’s estimator asks for the exact model and questions about condition, then gives an “up to” estimate. Apple or its trade-in partner confirms the amount after inspecting the submitted phone. The final value can be lower if the device does not match the description.

- Identify the exact model and, where requested, storage capacity.
- Confirm that the phone powers on and that the screen, body, buttons and cameras work.
- Turn off Find My, disable Activation Lock, erase the phone and remove it from your Apple Account.
- Resolve any carrier, financing or ownership obligation before submission.
- Keep the phone until an online replacement arrives unless your local Apple instructions say otherwise.
A phone that is ineligible for credit may still be accepted for free recycling; not every damaged iPhone has positive trade-in value. Apple’s current U.S. policy also says that if a revised valuation increases, Apple automatically increases the credit, but country-specific rules can differ.
Online versus in-store trade-in
Online
Start at the local Apple Trade In page, answer the condition questions, and apply the estimate during an eligible purchase or select the available gift-card route. You ship the old phone for inspection, so payment or final credit can take longer and the amount can change after receipt.

In store
An Apple Store can inspect the phone during the handoff and reduce shipping uncertainty. Inventory, opening hours and appointment requirements vary, and the store must be able to process the relevant purchase or credit in your market.

Compare net proceeds—not just the headline quote—after shipping, seller fees, time, payment speed and the risk of returns. A recent Pro or Pro Max in excellent condition is the case most likely to justify checking alternatives, while a damaged or older phone may be worth trading or recycling for convenience.

What happened after the promotion?
Apple reduced the U.S. estimates on June 19, 2025, the day after the promotional period ended. That change confirmed the deadline was operational, not merely an approximate “limited-time” label; MacRumors documented the reduction.
Apple later made a separate U.S. adjustment in May 2026. Reports put the iPhone 16 Pro Max maximum at up to $695, versus $685 previously, and the iPhone 16 at up to $460, versus $435. What to do now
- Open Apple’s Trade In page for your country.
- Enter the exact iPhone model and describe its actual condition.
- Record the current estimate and whether it is purchase credit or a gift-card offer.
- Compare the net amount with at least one marketplace or buyback quote if maximizing cash matters.
- Back up, sign out of iCloud, disable Find My and erase the phone only when you are ready to hand it over.
The 2025 promotional table is useful historical context, but current Apple estimates—not those expired figures—determine what your device is worth today.
