But Netflix has not reported a standalone dollar figure for revenue generated by enforcement. Its results also reflect price increases, the advertising tier, content performance and ordinary membership growth, so the crackdown should be treated as one contributor to a broader strategy rather than the sole cause of higher income.
What Netflix changed
Netflix defines a household as the people and devices using the account at the primary residence. Sharing an account outside that household is not permitted. Someone living elsewhere must open a separate account, transfer a profile or become an eligible paid extra member. See Netflix’s current rules at Netflix’s Help Center.
- Separate account: The former borrower pays for an independent membership.
- Profile transfer: Recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games and settings can move to a new account.
- Extra member: An account owner pays for a person outside the household where the plan and country support the feature.
Netflix expanded paid sharing to more than 100 countries representing over 80% of revenue in 2023 (Netflix Q2 2023 filing).
Why the policy offered a revenue opportunity
Netflix estimated that more than 100 million households were using accounts without directly paying (company comments reported by TIME). Enforcement created several ways to monetize that audience:

In its fourth-quarter 2023 letter, Netflix said paid sharing had become “normal course of business” and that millions of members were using profile-transfer and extra-member tools (Netflix Q4 2023 shareholder letter). That is management’s reported assessment, not a separately audited count of converted borrowers.
The evidence that Netflix benefited
Membership additions accelerated during rollout
Netflix reported 8.0 million global paid net additions in the second quarter of 2024, compared with 5.9 million in the second quarter of 2023 (Q2 2024 shareholder letter). The company noted that paid sharing had its first full-quarter effect in the earlier comparison period. The increase is consistent with successful conversion, but it cannot isolate enforcement from content releases, pricing, seasonality or other acquisition factors.

Revenue and paying memberships rose
| Measure | 2023 | 2024 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Global streaming revenue | $33.640 billion | $39.001 billion | Up 16% |
| United States and Canada streaming revenue | $14.874 billion | $17.359 billion | Up 17% |
| UCAN year-end paid memberships | 80.128 million | 89.625 million | Up 9.497 million |
| UCAN average monthly revenue per paying membership | $16.28 | $17.20 | Higher by $0.92 |
These figures come from Netflix’s 2024 Form 10-K (SEC filing). They show more paying memberships and more revenue per membership, not the amount produced specifically by former password borrowers.
Growth continued with multiple monetization engines
In the second quarter of 2026, Netflix reported $12.6 billion in quarterly revenue, up 13% year over year, and a 33.4% operating margin. Its July 2026 shareholder letter identified membership growth, pricing and advertising as the primary drivers, and projected approximately $3 billion of advertising revenue for 2026—roughly twice the prior year (Q2 2026 shareholder letter). Paid sharing was not listed as a separate revenue line.

Why the crackdown cannot be assigned a precise dollar value
Netflix does not publicly disclose revenue from extra-member accounts, the number of borrowers who became full subscribers, enforcement-related churn, incremental profit or a controlled comparison with markets where the policy was absent. Its 2024 filing attributes streaming-revenue growth primarily to average paying memberships and price increases (2024 Form 10-K).
A gross sign-up gain is not the same as incremental income. A new account may be ad-supported, discounted, replacing a cancellation or affected by payment failure. Netflix also warned that account-sharing changes could hurt attraction, retention, revenue and operating results. Some borrowers therefore paid, some used an extra-member slot, and others canceled or left for another service.

How advertising and pricing changed the economics
The ad-supported tier
Netflix said advertising-market sign-ups on its ad plan represented 40% of sign-ups in the fourth quarter of 2023 (Q4 2023 shareholder letter). A former borrower choosing that plan may generate less subscription revenue than a Standard or Premium customer but add advertising impressions. The crackdown created a payment decision; the ad tier supplied a lower-cost entry route.
Price increases
Netflix changes prices and plan features by country. Its filings explicitly identify price increases alongside membership growth as revenue drivers. The 2026 letter said recent price changes in the United States, Mexico and Spain were performing in line with expectations. It is therefore inaccurate to attribute the full revenue increase to password enforcement.

Who gained and who lost
- Netflix: A larger monetizable household base and more opportunities to sell subscriptions and advertising.
- Former borrowers: Continued access through a new account or extra-member fee, but at a new cost.
- Account owners: The choice to pay for an extra member, transfer a profile or remove access.
- Advertisers: More reachable viewers on the ad-supported plan.
- Competitors: An opportunity to attract people who canceled rather than pay.
Current extra-member limits
Eligibility varies by country, plan and billing method. Netflix’s Help Center says extra members are generally limited to supported Standard and Premium plans, unavailable on ad-supported plans, and unavailable on some third-party-billed or bundled accounts. The extra member must be activated in the same country as the account owner (Netflix Help Center). Plan-specific limits and names can vary; Netflix describes one extra-member slot for Standard and up to two for Premium in the displayed plan information (plan features).
Netflix’s 2025 Form 10-K reported worldwide paid-plan equivalents of $1–$37 per month and extra-member pricing of $2–$9 per month as of December 31, 2025. Those are global ranges, not a universal U.S. price list (2025 Form 10-K).
How to judge whether it worked
- Revenue: Total and regional streaming revenue increased.
- Paying households: Membership counts increased substantially.
- Revenue per membership: UCAN average monthly revenue rose from $16.28 to $17.20.
- Churn and profit: Netflix does not separately report cancellations, enforcement costs or incremental profit caused by paid sharing.
- Durability: The initial conversion wave cannot continue indefinitely; later growth depends more on content, pricing, advertising and ordinary acquisition.
Bottom line
Netflix’s password crackdown appears to have been commercially successful: it expanded the paying base and coincided with higher streaming revenue and memberships. The defensible claim is that paid sharing contributed to Netflix’s income growth. Public reporting does not support a precise “password-crackdown revenue” number or the claim that enforcement alone caused Netflix’s results.
