Skylight Gets Mark Cuban Backing as It Challenges TikTok With Bluesky’s AT Protocol

Skylight is a standalone TikTok-style video app built on AT Protocol, not a Bluesky feature. Here is what Mark Cuban backed, how portability works and why it is not yet a full TikTok replacement.

Skylight Social is a standalone short-form-video app, not a TikTok feature inside Bluesky. Launched publicly in April 2025 by Victoria “Tori” White and Reed Harmeyer, it uses the AT Protocol—the open social-networking technology also used by Bluesky—to offer vertical video, profiles, follows, comments, sharing and community-curated feeds. TechCrunch reported that Mark Cuban and Graham & Walker Venture Fund backed Skylight in a pre-seed round, although the investment amount and valuation were not disclosed. TechCrunch’s launch report and Skylight’s site describe the service as an AT Protocol-powered alternative—not yet a feature-for-feature replacement for TikTok.

What Skylight is

Skylight is a mobile-first social network built around vertical, short-form video. Its product pitch is “Your feed. Your rules.” Users can scroll videos, create profiles, follow accounts, like, comment and share posts, and use an in-app editor. April 2025 coverage said videos could be up to three minutes long. The app is available through the iOS App Store and Google Play.

Skylight describes itself as a Public Benefit Corporation. That corporate form signals a public-benefit purpose, but it does not by itself guarantee particular privacy, moderation or financial outcomes for users.

Who founded it?

CEO Victoria “Tori” White, a travel influencer and self-taught developer, and CTO Reed Harmeyer, a software developer, started Skylight after worrying that a possible TikTok ban could strand creators’ videos, followers, comments and community relationships. Their initial goal was to build a video service where those relationships could be less dependent on one company. TechCrunch profiled the founders and launch.

What Mark Cuban actually backed

In January 2025, Cuban said he was prepared to fund a TikTok alternative built on the AT Protocol. That statement was reported by TechCrunch. Skylight later became one of the projects he backed. TechCrunch described the financing as part of a pre-seed round that also included Graham & Walker Venture Fund.

The available coverage does not disclose Cuban’s individual investment, the total round size or the company’s valuation. Cuban is an investor, not Skylight’s founder, chief executive or operator, and his backing is not proof that the product has reached TikTok-scale traction.

What “Bluesky’s tech” means

The more precise term is AT Protocol, short for Authenticated Transfer Protocol. Bluesky is an application and company built on that protocol; it is not the protocol itself. AT Protocol is designed so multiple social applications can use compatible identity, account and social-graph infrastructure.

In practical terms, the architecture can reduce lock-in. A user may be able to use an existing Bluesky account with Skylight, carry relationships into the service and expose posts to compatible AT Protocol applications. That is different from saying that every follower, feature, recommendation or statistic automatically transfers.

Is AT Protocol a blockchain?

No. AT Protocol is a social-networking protocol, not a cryptocurrency ledger or blockchain. “Decentralized” also needs qualification: services and infrastructure can be distributed across participating operators, while an individual app may still control its interface, storage choices, moderation rules, ranking and business model. Neither Skylight nor AT Protocol automatically gives users control over every one of those decisions.

How Skylight connects with Bluesky

  • Skylight says users can sign in with an existing Bluesky account.
  • Followers and connections may carry across the AT Protocol ecosystem.
  • Skylight posts can be visible to Bluesky users and users of other compatible applications.
  • Skylight can display or stream video from Bluesky through the integration.

Compatibility is not the same as automatic distribution. A Bluesky account does not mean every Bluesky user will see or follow a creator’s Skylight videos. Feeds, ranking, moderation, analytics and available controls can differ by application.

Features: available versus previously planned

Capability Status supported by the cited material
Vertical video feed Current product feature
Profiles, follows, likes, comments and sharing Current or reported launch features
In-app video editing Reported feature
Videos up to three minutes Reported in April 2025 coverage; check the current app for any change
Community-curated feeds Added with version 2.0 coverage in August 2025
Sounds, duets, stitching, bookmarks and playlists Previously announced as planned, not established here as current features

The App Store release history describes a two-direction discovery interface: swipe left to browse different curators and swipe up to see more videos from the same curator. The listing is the best place to check the current version and feature availability.

Why community curation matters

Skylight’s version 2.0 approach lets people create and repost videos into feeds that others can follow. Instead of relying only on one opaque recommendation system, discovery can be organized by human curators and niche communities. TechCrunch reported on the curator feature.

That model gives users more visible influence over what a feed represents, but it has costs. Curator feeds can be uneven, slower to populate and less effortless than TikTok’s highly optimized recommendation engine. Their quality also depends on having enough active creators and curators.

How large is Skylight?

The reported figures show growth, but they are not directly comparable metrics and should not be confused with the size of the broader AT Protocol ecosystem.

Time or listing Reported figure Qualification
April 2025 launch Public launch Bluesky reportedly had more than 33.8 million users at that time; that was not Skylight’s user count.
August 2025 About 240,000 downloads and 100,000 uploaded videos Figures reported by TechCrunch.
January 2026 More than 380,000 users, over 150,000 direct uploads and 1.4 million plays on January 23 Company-reported figures carried by TechCrunch, not an independent audit.
Google Play listing 100K+ downloads A public download bucket, not total users or active users.
Skylight website 40 million-plus users for the AT Protocol network Broader network context, not Skylight’s installed or active user base.

Sources for the timeline include the launch report, the August 2025 report, the January 2026 report, and the Google Play listing.

Is Skylight a real TikTok replacement?

Not yet, based on the available evidence. Skylight is a credible experiment in open, interoperable short-form video, but TikTok remains far ahead in content volume, creator reach, recommendation maturity, effects, licensed music and established audience behavior.

Decision factor Skylight’s position What that means
Audience and content Smaller, growing network Creators should expect less discovery and fewer established communities.
Portability AT Protocol compatibility Identity and relationships may travel, but transfer is not universal.
Discovery Algorithmic feed plus curator-led feeds More visible human input, potentially less frictionless discovery.
Editing and remixing Editor and short video are established; sounds, duets and stitches were previously planned Feature parity with TikTok is not established.
Music and monetization Not established at TikTok scale; no verified Skylight creator-revenue program in the cited material Professional creators should not assume existing income or music rights transfer.
Moderation and reliability Smaller service with anecdotal store complaints Users should test the app and review its rules before moving a primary audience.

The strongest reason to try Skylight is its architecture: creators can experiment with a video network that is less tied to one platform and may offer more explicit control over discovery. The strongest reason not to switch is that open infrastructure does not solve the cold-start problem of finding enough creators, fresh content, reliable moderation and sustainable creator incentives.

App quality, privacy and ownership cautions

Store ratings provide signals, not audited failure rates. The U.S. Apple listing showed a 4.4 rating from approximately 1.4K ratings. Google Play showed a 2.0-star rating from roughly 150 reviews and 100K-plus downloads. Google reviewers reported crashes, freezing, failed launches, stuck videos, feed confusion and moderation concerns. Those are anecdotal user reports and may not represent all users or current versions.

Apple’s listing says the app may collect personal information, photos and videos and other data; those privacy disclosures are supplied by the developer and are not verified by Apple. Review the current privacy policy before uploading sensitive material.

Skylight says users retain ownership of their videos and social relationships. Its terms of service also grant permissions to use user content to provide, improve, promote and distribute Skylight services through Skylight and the AT Protocol. “You own your content” therefore does not mean the service receives no license to process, resize, distribute or promote it.

Those terms do not necessarily govern every other AT Protocol application. Portability also raises practical questions about deletion, replicated copies, moderation and what happens after content becomes visible outside Skylight. Read the current terms and privacy policy before treating cross-network publishing as a guaranteed deletion or ownership solution.

How Skylight compares with the main alternatives

Service Best fit Main trade-off versus Skylight
TikTok Maximum short-form reach, mature recommendations, sounds and effects Centralized platform with less portable identity and social graph.
YouTube Shorts Creators using YouTube search, subscriptions and long-form video Established ecosystem and monetization, but no AT Protocol interoperability.
Instagram Reels Creators with Instagram followers, Stories and messaging Strong existing social graph, but centralized under Meta.
Bluesky Text-first social networking, custom feeds and AT Protocol participation Broader social app, not a dedicated TikTok-style video experience.

Other AT Protocol projects, including video- and photo-oriented apps such as Flashes, are still part of an evolving ecosystem rather than a settled competitor list. TechCrunch’s ecosystem overview provides context.

What this means for creators and investors

For creators

  • Try Skylight as an additional channel rather than assuming your TikTok audience or income will transfer.
  • Keep original files and maintain direct access to your audience through channels you control.
  • Check current music, remix, moderation and analytics features before planning a professional workflow.
  • Use a test account first if app stability or cross-network visibility is a concern.

For investors and startup watchers

Cuban’s backing validates investor interest in an open alternative, not product-market fit. The available reports do not establish revenue, retention, valuation, creator earnings or a paid business model. The central business question is whether interoperability and user-controlled discovery can overcome TikTok’s advantages in scale, recommendation data, creator incentives and infrastructure.

The Bottom Line

Skylight is a genuine standalone video app with Mark Cuban-backed pre-seed financing and a meaningful technical distinction: it is built on AT Protocol, the technology underlying Bluesky, rather than being a Bluesky video mode. That can reduce lock-in and enable cross-app participation, but it does not yet deliver TikTok’s reach, content supply, creator economics, feature maturity or proven reliability. Treat Skylight as an emerging companion network and open-social experiment—not a complete TikTok replacement.
