The reported notices went out on Friday night, September 12, and affected generalist “AI tutors” and data-annotation workers. Reuters repeated the report but said it could not immediately verify the figure. xAI did not confirm that 500 people were dismissed; instead, it pointed to a plan to expand specialist AI-tutor roles.
What xAI reportedly did
The reported cuts targeted xAI’s human-feedback and data-preparation operation. Business Insider’s reporting, cited by Reuters and other outlets, put the number at at least 500 workers out of a broader group of about 1,500—roughly one-third of that operation. Reports published September 12–15, 2025 described the reduction as affecting generalist roles rather than ending human input altogether.
Workers reportedly received notices on the night of Friday, September 12. Access to company systems was said to end immediately, while pay continued through the end of an existing contract or November 30, 2025, depending on the worker’s arrangement. Those details came from internal messages reviewed for the original report, not from an xAI announcement. The available coverage also does not establish how many affected people were direct employees, contractors or other contingent workers.
How reliable is the “500 layoffs” figure?
The number should be treated as a reported estimate, not an officially confirmed headcount.

| Point | What the reporting establishes |
|---|---|
| Number affected | Business Insider reported at least 500 people were let go. Reuters repeated the report and said it could not immediately verify it. |
| Share of the team | About one-third, if the reported figures of 500 affected workers and a 1,500-person operation are accurate. |
| Employment status | Not established. The reports do not provide a definitive employee-versus-contractor breakdown. |
| Scope | The figure appears to concern a data-annotation or AI-tutor operation, not every xAI worker terminated that week. |
| Company confirmation | xAI did not publicly confirm the 500 figure in the cited coverage. |
Because several stories trace back to the same Business Insider report, multiple headlines do not necessarily represent separate confirmation. Reuters’ explicit non-verification is an important part of the story. (Reuters-sourced report via Investing.com; Reuters-sourced report via MarketScreener)
Who the workers were and what they did
xAI reportedly called members of the group AI tutors. Their work went beyond simple tagging. It could include labeling and contextualizing material, ranking model answers, writing examples, reviewing code, and preparing feedback used to train or evaluate Grok. The Information compared the work with services provided by data-labeling companies such as Scale AI and Surge AI, including video annotation and writing. (The Information)
“Data annotator,” “AI tutor,” “human evaluator” and “contract worker” are not interchangeable legal or organizational categories. The reports describe a function and a group of roles, but do not settle the employment status of everyone counted in the reported total.
Why xAI said it was changing course
The reported explanation was a strategic pivot away from generalist tutoring toward specialist expertise. xAI said it planned to expand its specialist AI-tutor team by 10 times and highlighted fields including:

- Science, technology, engineering and mathematics
- Finance and medicine
- Coding
- Safety and related technical evaluation
This describes a change in the type of human feedback xAI wanted, not proof that human feedback was no longer necessary. A specialist may be better equipped to identify a subtle coding error, test a medical explanation, assess a financial claim or flag a safety problem. The public statement about 10-times expansion is a hiring intention; it does not show that xAI actually hired ten times as many people or that the specialist group would be larger overall.
What this means for Grok
The reported team helped create the examples and judgments used to train and refine Grok. Reducing generalist roles while emphasizing specialists could indicate that xAI was placing more value on domain-specific evaluation as its models became more capable or as the company focused on harder tasks.
Several interpretations remain possible:
- Scale versus expertise: Generalists provide broad coverage and high volumes of judgments; specialists can offer deeper accuracy in technical areas.
- Cost versus quality: Specialist labor may cost more, but low-quality labels can make a large dataset less useful.
- Breadth versus safety: Generalist feedback can reflect varied user behavior, while experts may improve testing in high-risk domains.
- Continuity versus speed: A rapid staffing change can redirect resources but may also disrupt projects and institutional knowledge.
The evidence does not show that xAI replaced these workers with software, that annotation became obsolete, or that Grok’s performance improved or deteriorated because of the cuts.

The layoffs were reported amid other changes at xAI, including the reported departure of finance chief Mike Liberatore after a short tenure. That is useful context, but the available accounts do not establish that the data-team reduction and executive departures were one formally announced restructuring plan. What the episode says about AI work
xAI’s reported move illustrates a distinction that is becoming more important in model development:
- Generalist annotation: broad labeling, transcription, ranking, categorization and writing.
- Specialist tutoring: domain-informed review of reasoning, code, medical or financial content and safety behavior.
It is reasonable to infer that at least some AI companies may shift spending from very large pools of general-purpose labelers toward smaller pools of higher-skilled evaluators. One company’s staffing decision is not evidence that the entire industry is reducing annotation work. Demand for broad data preparation, quality checks and human oversight can continue even when the mix of skills changes.
What remains unknown
- The exact number of people affected.
- How many were employees, contractors or workers supplied through another company.
- Whether all contracts ended or some roles were transferred or renewed.
- Whether the reported 1,500-person figure included the same categories of workers as the reported 500.
- Whether the planned specialist expansion produced a net increase in xAI’s human-feedback workforce.
Those gaps matter for workers assessing severance or unemployment rights, because a contract ending is not legally identical to an employee layoff and the applicable rules depend on the worker’s jurisdiction and agreement.
The narrowest accurate conclusion
In September 2025, xAI reportedly cut at least 500 generalist AI tutors and data-annotation workers connected with Grok, while publicly emphasizing a much larger specialist-tutor effort. Business Insider supplied the central figure; Reuters reported it with an explicit warning that it had not independently verified the count. The clearest interpretation is a reallocation of human-training labor, not confirmed proof that xAI eliminated human annotation or replaced the workers with AI.
