Do not open, use, discard, or keep it. Check the label without opening the parcel, identify the carrier, and report the misdelivery through Amazon or that carrier’s official support channel. Return it unopened as instructed, or arrange an official pickup. The correct process differs from an unordered package addressed to you, which may indicate a brushing scam.
First, identify which package problem you have

The FTC’s rule that consumers generally do not have to pay for or return unordered merchandise applies to goods addressed to the consumer, not automatically to a parcel bearing somebody else’s name. See the FTC guidance at consumer.ftc.gov.
What to do with a package addressed to someone else
- Read the label without opening it. Confirm the recipient, street address, apartment or suite, carrier, tracking number, return address, and whether your address is actually printed. Photograph the label privately if Amazon or the carrier requests documentation. Do not post the label or its tracking number publicly.
- Check with your household. Ask whether someone ordered the parcel or received it as a gift. Amazon recommends checking with friends and family before treating an apparently unsolicited package as unknown; its guidance is available at Amazon Customer Service.
- Identify who delivered it. Use the carrier logo, tracking format, delivery notification, or delivery photo. Amazon Logistics, USPS, UPS, and FedEx have different return procedures.
- Report the misdelivery through an official channel. Contact Amazon in its app or by typing Amazon’s website address yourself. For a non-Amazon carrier, use the carrier’s official tracking or support page. Give the tracking number, delivery date and approximate time, carrier, and a description such as: “A package was delivered to my address, but it is addressed to someone else. I have not opened it. Please advise whether you want pickup or a specific return.” Amazon says reports may include the number of packages, at least one tracking number, a label photograph, and other useful information.
- Return it or arrange handoff. Prefer an official carrier pickup, handing it to the carrier that delivered it, or taking it to that carrier’s staffed location. Do not put a UPS, FedEx, or Amazon parcel in a USPS mailbox unless the carrier or USPS specifically tells you to do so.
- Keep a record. Save the case number, screenshots of in-app instructions, delivery details, and any receipt for postage that Amazon or the carrier expressly authorized. Do not pay an unexpected fee or postage merely because someone asks.
Carrier-specific return instructions
USPS
USPS guidance says a person who receives mail not intended for them must promptly return it. Write “Misdelivered—Not at This Address” or “Return to Sender” on the unopened package without covering the barcode or return address, then give it to a postal carrier or take it to a Post Office. The USPS delivery guidance is at about.usps.com.
USPS procedures distinguish unopened and opened mail. Unopened mail can generally be marked “Refused” or returned; an opened item may require new postage or different handling. See Domestic Mail Manual 508 and USPS Customer Service ruling PS-177. USPS also says it does not have jurisdiction over parcels shipped by other services unless they entered USPS custody (USPS explanation).

Amazon Logistics
Use Amazon Customer Service in the Amazon app or website. Amazon specifically directs people who receive a package addressed to someone else and unknown to them to contact Customer Service (Amazon guidance). Ask whether Amazon wants a driver handoff, pickup, designated drop-off, or an investigation report; do not assume a free label or guaranteed pickup.
UPS or FedEx
Use the official tracking page or support channel tied to the tracking number. Report “delivered to the wrong address” and request instructions or pickup. Outcomes can depend on the shipment, seller, account, and local procedure, so do not promise that the carrier will always collect it or waive postage.

If the parcel was left at your location but your address is not on the label
That is a wrong-location delivery, not simply a package addressed to you incorrectly. Notify the carrier using its official channel and provide the tracking number and delivery photo if available. Do not open it to investigate, search for the printed address, or assume it is safe to visit. Keep the package secure while awaiting instructions. If it is leaking, emits an unusual odor, appears tampered with, or seems dangerous, move away and contact emergency services or the carrier.
If you opened it accidentally
- Stop handling the contents and do not consume food, apply cosmetics, install electronics, connect devices to your network, or touch unknown substances.
- Keep the box, label, inserts, and tracking information. Take a private photograph for documentation.
- Reseal the parcel as neatly as possible.
- Contact Amazon or the delivering carrier and explain that it was opened accidentally. Ask for written or in-app return instructions.
USPS says opened mail may not qualify for the ordinary unopened-mail refusal process and may require additional postage (PS-177). That is a handling rule, not a reason to conceal the accidental opening.

If it is addressed to you but you never ordered it
First check household members, gifts, Amazon orders, and payment accounts. Repeated unexpected packages, review requests, QR codes, payment demands, or expensive goods you did not buy can indicate a brushing scam: a seller sends merchandise to an address and uses the recipient’s identity to create fraudulent reviews. The FTC recommends changing shopping-account passwords, monitoring credit reports, and reporting suspected fraud (FTC consumer alert).
- Change passwords for Amazon and other shopping accounts if compromise is possible; use unique passwords and multifactor authentication where available.
- Review orders, saved payment methods, and account contact details.
- Monitor your reports through AnnualCreditReport.com.
- Report suspected fraud at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and contact Amazon through its official app or site.
- Do not scan an unsolicited QR code, click a label link, call an unverified sender, or pay return shipping requested by the package.
Do not confuse this situation with a package addressed to another person. The FTC’s unordered-merchandise guidance concerns goods sent to you without an order; it is not a blanket permission to keep another person’s property.

Privacy, personal contact, and safety
A shipping label contains personal information. Share it only with Amazon, the carrier, law enforcement, or another legitimate party handling the delivery. Do not post photographs in neighborhood groups or social media, and crop out your own address before sending a private image when practical.
If the named recipient knocks, calls, or texts, keep communication brief and avoid passwords, one-time codes, payment details, identification copies, or unrelated personal information. Arrange carrier pickup or use a staffed carrier location where possible. A person who knows a tracking number is not necessarily the intended recipient. Do not confront anyone, enter private property, or continue the interaction if the person becomes aggressive; contact local authorities if needed.

When Amazon or the carrier says delivery was correct
Ask for a review of GPS delivery data, delivery photographs, driver notes, tracking scans, and the address or unit information. Explain that the issue is a misdelivery to the wrong recipient or location, not merely a missing package. If Amazon tells you to return it personally, request written or in-app instructions, whether authorized postage will be reimbursed, a pickup or drop-off alternative, and a case reference number. Retain receipts only when paid return shipping was expressly authorized.
If there is no usable return address, report the tracking number to Amazon or the carrier rather than mailing it blindly or using an address found through an internet search. For a previous tenant, write “Not at this address—return to sender” and use the carrier process; do not add a new address unless the actual recipient has safely provided it.
What not to do
- Do not intentionally open, use, discard, or keep a package addressed to someone else.
- Do not claim that every package delivered to your home can legally be kept.
- Do not pay unknown fees, buy gift cards, send money, or provide account credentials or verification codes.
- Do not click links or scan QR codes printed on a suspicious parcel.
- Do not call an unverified sender or visit a stranger’s address.
- Do not leave the parcel exposed outside when a secure handoff or carrier instruction is available.
- Do not place a non-USPS package in a USPS mailbox without specific direction.
Bottom line
Keep someone else’s Amazon package unopened, document the label privately, identify the carrier, and report the misdelivery through Amazon or that carrier’s official support channel. Return it through the instructed carrier process. If the parcel is addressed to you but was never ordered, treat repeated or suspicious deliveries as a possible brushing scam and secure your accounts instead of contacting an unverified sender.
