Re:

iPhone Air Orders Slashed to Almost “End-of-Production” Levels: What Nikkei’s Report Means

Nikkei’s “end-of-production” wording does not mean Apple canceled iPhone Air. We separate the supply-chain claim from confirmed Apple facts and explain the phone’s price and feature trade-offs.

Short answer: Nikkei reported on October 22, 2025, that Apple had sharply reduced iPhone Air production orders to levels nearly associated with the end of a product cycle. That is a supply-chain claim—not an announcement that Apple canceled the phone. As of August 18, 2026, Apple still lists and sells iPhone Air in the United States.

The report may point to weaker-than-expected demand or revised production planning, but neither Apple’s unit sales nor the alleged cuts have been publicly confirmed in the cited sources.

What Nikkei reportedly said

Secondary coverage of Nikkei’s October 22, 2025 report said Apple had cut iPhone Air production orders to “almost end-of-production” levels. The report was attributed to people familiar with Apple’s supply chain and appeared shortly after the phone launched. 9to5Mac’s account of the Nikkei report does not establish a disclosed unit total, percentage reduction, supplier list, or audited sales figure.

That distinction matters. “Orders” can refer to component or assembly planning and does not mean completed customer sales. The available coverage also does not establish whether “end-of-production levels” was Nikkei’s wording, a source’s wording, or a translated description. Precise percentages or supplier-level claims should not be inferred without the original Nikkei text.

  • Carrier Verification Required: Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility
  • Simple Activation Process: When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service
  • Package Contents: The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable
  • Battery Health Guarantee: Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%

Does this mean Apple discontinued iPhone Air?

No. A company can reduce future production orders while continuing to sell existing inventory and fulfill replenishment orders. “Near end-of-production levels” describes the scale of an alleged order change; it is not automatically a formal end-of-life decision.

Apple’s U.S. store still listed iPhone Air as a current model on August 18, 2026, with a starting price of $999. Apple’s iPhone lineup therefore confirms continued sale, but it neither proves strong demand nor disproves a substantial earlier production cut.

Why availability was treated as a demand signal

The secondary report highlighted unusually immediate delivery estimates and in-store pickup after launch. New iPhones sometimes develop longer waits when demand outstrips initial supply; unchanged availability can therefore be consistent with softer demand.

It is only an indirect indicator. Inventory already produced, manufacturing capacity, regional allocation, and Apple’s initial forecasts can all keep delivery dates short. A useful evidence hierarchy is:

  1. Most direct: Apple-reported unit sales or audited financial disclosures. None are established in the cited coverage.
  2. Strong but indirect: supplier orders, assembly schedules, channel inventory, and delivery-time changes.
  3. Weakest: online comments, anecdotes, search interest, or availability viewed in isolation.

The same coverage also referenced market commentary and a Morgan Stanley production view that expected higher production for other new iPhone models but did not make the same adjustment for iPhone Air. That is context, not a disclosed Apple forecast.

Why the Air may have been vulnerable

These are plausible explanations for a demand shortfall, not proven causes of the reported order change.

A difficult price position

Apple lists U.S. starting prices of $799 for iPhone 17, $999 for iPhone Air, $1,099 for iPhone 17 Pro, and $599 for iPhone 17e. Apple’s lineup page places Air between a cheaper mainstream model and a Pro model only $100 more expensive at entry level. A buyer may choose the regular iPhone to save $200, or the Pro to obtain a clearer set of premium features.

Model U.S. starting price Likely appeal
iPhone 17e $599 Lowest entry price
iPhone 17 $799 Current generation at a lower price
iPhone Air $999 Thin, light design and large high-refresh display
iPhone 17 Pro $1,099 More extensive premium feature set, especially for camera-focused buyers

Verifiable compromises

Apple’s technical specifications show a 6.5-inch OLED display with ProMotion up to 120Hz, an A19 Pro chip, and a single 48MP Fusion Main rear camera. The phone uses USB-C but supports USB 2, and it activates through eSIM rather than a physical SIM. Those choices concentrate the product’s appeal on design, portability, display quality, and performance rather than camera flexibility or fast wired transfers.

Thinness is the central differentiator

iPhone Air measures 0.22 inches (5.64 mm) thick and weighs 5.82 ounces (165 grams), according to Apple. That is a meaningful benefit for people who prioritize a light phone, but thinness alone may not justify a $999 starting price for the broader market. That conclusion is an inference from the lineup, not a reported explanation from Apple.

What about reports of strong demand in China?

Early reports described strong interest when Air went on sale in China, while the later Nikkei report described sharply lower orders. Those claims are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Preorders, launch-day foot traffic, or initial sales can capture curiosity without demonstrating sustained demand across all regions.

China-specific results also need careful comparison: eSIM requirements, carrier support, local inventory, and launch timing may differ from the United States and other markets. The supplied coverage does not establish whether the early reports measured preorders, completed sales, delivery delays, or store traffic, so it cannot prove that Chinese demand remained strong or that it collapsed.

When Air makes sense

  • You value minimum weight and thickness more than camera versatility.
  • You want a large 120Hz-class display and A19 Pro performance in a lighter body.
  • A single main camera meets your everyday photography needs.
  • Your carrier supports eSIM and you do not need a physical SIM.

When to choose another iPhone

  • You need ultrawide or telephoto cameras.
  • You regularly move large files over a cable.
  • You want the strongest feature-per-dollar value.
  • You are deciding primarily on price rather than portability.

Check the real cost before deciding

Apple’s buying flow advertises trade-in credit of up to $695, depending on the device, condition, and eligibility. See the live estimate at Apple’s iPhone Air purchase page; the amount can change and is not a guaranteed discount. Carrier promotions and financing can also change the effective price substantially, so compare total payments and required plans with the unlocked cash price.

Apple also advertises an Apple Upgrade option on its iPhone Air product page. Eligibility and current terms should be checked at checkout rather than assumed from a headline price.

Bottom line on the Nikkei report

The most defensible reading is that Apple reportedly reset iPhone Air production orders sharply downward soon after launch, possibly reflecting weaker-than-expected demand. It is not proof that Apple stopped making the phone, canceled the line, or that every market rejected it. Apple’s continued U.S. sale as of August 18, 2026 confirms only that iPhone Air remained an active product; the purchase decision should rest on its thin design and trade-offs, not on an unconfirmed cancellation narrative.
