AT&T and Verizon did not announce a universal tariff fee or an across-the-board wireless-rate increase. In April 2025, their CEOs warned that if tariffs raised handset costs—and suppliers passed those costs to the carriers—customers could ultimately pay more. The comments were conditional, supplied no dollar amount or start date, and focused mainly on phones and promotions rather than every subscriber’s monthly service charge.
What Verizon said
During Verizon’s April 22, 2025 first-quarter earnings call, CEO Hans Vestberg described tariff policy as a “moving target.” He said only a small portion of Verizon’s guided capital spending was tariff-exposed, but that the company did not plan to absorb an “enormous” tariff-driven increase in handset costs. In that circumstance, he said the cost would ultimately reach consumers. Vestberg also stressed that Verizon did not yet know the final tariff level or its effect. The complete exchange is in Verizon’s earnings-call transcript.
That was a warning about possible future costs, not a published handset price list, surcharge or effective date.
What AT&T said
As reported by Bloomberg and Fierce Network, CEO John Stankey said AT&T’s traditional approach would be to move supplier-passed handset costs through to end users. The report describes his earnings-call remarks; it is not an AT&T announcement of a particular price schedule.

Both companies’ positions were conditional: tariffs would have to apply, suppliers would have to pass through the cost, and the carriers would then decide how to reflect it in their offers.
Phone price versus wireless-plan price
“Your bill” can contain several different charges. The 2025 comments primarily concerned handset economics, not a confirmed increase to the recurring service rate.

| Bill component | How tariff-related costs could appear |
|---|---|
| Device retail price | A higher landed cost could raise the phone’s cash or financed price. |
| Device installment | A more expensive phone spread over 36 months would produce a higher payment unless credits offset it. |
| Trade-in or “free phone” promotion | Credits could become smaller, require a higher-tier plan, or be tied to stricter eligibility while the advertised price stays unchanged. |
| Wireless service plan | A recurring rate increase is a separate decision; the 2025 statements did not establish one caused by handset tariffs. |
A manufacturer, distributor or carrier could also absorb some of the increase to protect market share. Verizon’s wording concerned an “enormous” increase, not every dollar of every possible tariff.
What customers could actually pay more for
Higher device prices
Tariffs can affect imported finished phones or components. The amount would vary by assembly location, component origin, customs classification, exemptions and supply-chain contracts. There was no responsible basis in the cited statements for predicting whether a particular phone would cost $20, $100 or nothing more.

Less generous promotions
Carriers can preserve a headline price while reducing trade-in credits, shortening a promotion or requiring a more expensive plan. A “free” phone can still require an eligible trade-in, a qualifying plan and a long installment period.
Longer replacement cycles
If new models become less affordable, customers may keep working phones longer, choose older or refurbished devices, or move to midrange models. Fierce Network identified less frequent upgrades as one possible consequence.

Was there one tariff rate for all smartphones?
No single rate should be assumed. Exposure can differ according to:
- where a phone and its components were made;
- the product’s customs classification;
- temporary exclusions or delayed implementation;
- whether the carrier buys directly from a manufacturer or through a distributor; and
- how suppliers, carriers and retailers divide the cost.
Verizon’s April 2025 statement specifically said the final level was unknown. Without the legal authority, affected countries and products, exemptions, effective date and duration, a universal percentage would be speculation.

What is confirmed in 2026?
As of August 18, 2026, the cited material does not establish an across-the-board AT&T or Verizon tariff surcharge for customers. Verizon’s first-quarter 2026 and second-quarter 2026 investor pages do not, in the available information, quantify a tariff-specific handset charge.
AT&T separately lists increases on certain retired plans. Its support pages state that select retired Unlimited Your Way plans rose by $5 per smartphone line per month; some accounts activated or moved to affected plans between July 24 and November 1, 2025 began seeing the change on August 2026 bills. Other retired unlimited plans list increases of $10 per month for a single-line account or $20 for multiple lines, depending on the plan. Certain Mobile Share plans list $5 or $10 monthly increases based on the data tier. See AT&T’s pages for select retired Unlimited Your Way plans, retired unlimited plans and Mobile Share plans. Those pages describe plan changes and do not attribute them to tariffs.
How to decide whether to upgrade
Compare the complete transaction rather than the advertised monthly device payment:
- the device installment over the full term;
- the required service plan and any activation or upgrade fee;
- trade-in value and the duration of promotional credits;
- taxes, regulatory fees and insurance;
- the remaining balance on your current phone; and
- what happens to credits if you pay off early, switch carriers or leave the qualifying plan.
Buying now can make sense when
- your current phone is failing or no longer supported;
- a documented trade-in offer materially lowers the total cost;
- the promotion is guaranteed for the entire installment term; or
- you have found an unlocked phone at a price you are comfortable paying.
Waiting can make sense when
- your current phone works well;
- the offer requires an expensive plan or a long commitment;
- you are not eligible for a meaningful trade-in; or
- you want to see how manufacturers and carriers adjust promotions.
Other ways to limit exposure include keeping your phone longer, buying refurbished, comparing unlocked prices from Apple, Samsung or Google, and checking prepaid or competing-carrier offers. None guarantees a lower price; compare the full cost and coverage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCommon mistakes when reading the 2025 statements
- Treating an earnings-call answer as a formal pricing announcement.
- Assuming a tariff applies equally to every phone.
- Confusing a device installment increase with a wireless-service-rate increase.
- Calling AT&T’s 2026 plan changes tariff-related without evidence.
- Ignoring trade-in credits and the plan requirements attached to them.
- Projecting a dollar increase without a documented tariff rate, device cost and pass-through percentage.
The Bottom Line
AT&T and Verizon warned in April 2025 that a large tariff-driven increase in handset costs could reach customers. They did not announce a universal tariff surcharge, a specific phone-price increase or a blanket rise in monthly service rates. The AT&T plan increases documented for 2026 are separate changes whose support pages do not identify tariffs as the cause.
