Amazon is right in one narrow sense: Just Walk Out was not simply a hidden room of cashiers watching every shopper live and manually building every receipt. But the system was never free of human labor. Workers labeled shopping footage for machine-learning models and, according to reporting about its earlier operation, reviewed or validated many transactions.
The most accurate description is a hybrid checkout system: cameras, sensors and software handled the normal transaction, while people supplied training data and intervened when the system was uncertain. Amazon has not published enough current operating data to independently verify how often that human intervention occurs in 2026.
What Just Walk Out was supposed to do
In a typical deployment, a shopper identifies themselves at the entrance with a payment card, mobile wallet, retailer app or, where available, Amazon One. Cameras, weight sensors and other systems observe product interactions. Machine-learning software builds a virtual cart, the shopper leaves without scanning items at a checkout, and the linked payment method is charged.
Amazon describes the technology as a combination of computer vision, sensor fusion and machine learning rather than a single camera or algorithm. Its technical explanation is available at Amazon’s Just Walk Out overview, while AWS describes deployment considerations in its retail technology briefing.

Where the “1,000 workers” story came from
Reporting by The Information said that, as of mid-2022, more than 1,000 people in India worked on Just Walk Out-related tasks. The reported duties included labeling images and video, reviewing transactions and validating purchases.
A source cited by the publication said roughly 700 of every 1,000 sales required human review at that time, compared with an internal target of 20 to 50 reviews per 1,000 sales. Those are attributed, mid-2022 figures—not an independently verified 2026 rate. Amazon disputed the characterization and the precise numbers. See The Information’s investigation.
“Watching” can mean three different things
| Human activity | What it means | Does it prove live cashiering? |
|---|---|---|
| Training-data annotation | Workers label frames or clips so a model can learn which shopper handled which product. | No. This work may happen after the shopping event. |
| Transaction validation | A person checks an uncertain or disputed event and may help determine what appears on a receipt. | No, but it is direct human participation in some checkout decisions. |
| Live monitoring | A person watches a current feed while a shopper is in the store and makes decisions in real time. | Amazon says this is not how receipts are generated; available reporting does not establish that every visit was live-monitored. |
| Remote cashiering | People manually observe each shopper’s entire trip and enter every item as a cashier would. | The viral claim has not been established by the cited evidence. |
What Amazon says now
Amazon’s current explanation says Just Walk Out receipts are generated by computer-vision algorithms and that associates do not watch live video of shoppers to create receipts. It acknowledges human annotation and validation work, and says only a small minority of visits require validation, with the rate declining year over year. The company has not disclosed a current reviewer headcount or a verifiable review percentage.

That makes both extreme summaries misleading. “Workers watched everyone” overstates the evidence; “no humans were involved” ignores acknowledged annotation and reported transaction validation. The issue is how often people affect customer-facing outcomes, not whether any human labor exists in an AI system.
What happens when the system is uncertain?
- Cameras and sensors collect data about shopping events.
- Models infer which shopper interacted with which product.
- Low-confidence or disputed events may be routed for human validation.
- Annotated examples can be used to improve the models.
- The system issues a receipt and charges the identified payment method.
Amazon has not publicly documented the exact confidence thresholds, routing rules, staffing arrangements or retention period in enough detail to describe a more specific workflow reliably.
Why Amazon pulled it back from many grocery stores
In April 2024, Amazon said it was removing Just Walk Out from many full-size Amazon Fresh stores and emphasizing Dash Carts. Amazon’s stated reason was format and customer fit: grocery shoppers often wanted a running total, easier receipt review and product visibility during larger trips.

Dash Cart lets shoppers scan or identify items while a screen displays the basket total, then supports a checkout-free exit. Just Walk Out offers a more invisible experience that is naturally suited to smaller, faster purchases.
Independent reporting also pointed to the practical burden of dense camera coverage, ceiling and network infrastructure, shelf changes, installation downtime and the difficulty of scaling the system economically in large stores. The Associated Press covered the grocery change at this report; Amazon’s explanation is in its store and technology update.

Yes, but its role has changed. Amazon said in 2024 that the technology was available in more than 200 third-party locations, and later official material describes deployments in hundreds of locations worldwide. Target settings include airports, stadiums, universities, hospitals and other small-format stores. Amazon continues to market it as a business-to-business service through its retail technology program.

Separately, Amazon announced on January 27, 2026 that it was closing Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh physical stores and converting various locations to Whole Foods Market stores. That decision changes Amazon’s own store portfolio; it does not amount to a shutdown of the third-party Just Walk Out product.

Amazon says ordinary Just Walk Out operation assigns a temporary numeric code to a shopping trip and does not use or collect biometric information for the technology. Amazon One is a separate palm-recognition service that can be used for entry, identification or payment in some locations; not every Just Walk Out store uses it.
The system does use cameras and sensor data inside the store. In a 2025 procurement response, Amazon said the vast majority of video content is deleted after a shopping session within a reasonable period. Exact retention, access controls and practices can vary by deployment and contract. The procurement document is available at this PDF.

Common failure points
- Two shoppers reach for adjacent products or cross paths.
- An item is picked up and returned to a different shelf.
- Merchandise is hidden inside a bag or beneath other items.
- Lighting, camera obstruction or a crowded layout blocks useful views.
- Shelf rearrangements and planogram changes make product-location assumptions stale.
- A shopper is charged for an item they did not take, or is not charged for one the system missed.
- A delayed receipt results when an exception requires validation.
- Store employees must intervene, correct inventory or resolve a dispute.
What shoppers and retailers should take from the controversy
For shoppers
- Just Walk Out is most naturally suited to quick, small purchases.
- For a large grocery basket, a visible running total may be more useful than invisible tracking.
- Camera-based checkout may be unacceptable to privacy-sensitive customers even without biometric identification.
- Entry, payment setup and receipt delays can create friction despite the promise of speed.
For retailers
- Ask for current human-review rates, error rates and exception-handling procedures.
- Request retention, access-control and deletion terms for video and sensor data.
- Price the full project, including cameras, networking, electrical work, installation downtime, software, support and manual exception handling.
- Test the system against crowded aisles, small products, bags, multipacks, poor lighting and frequent shelf changes.
- Compare the total cost with staffed checkout, self-checkout, scan-and-go apps, smart carts and RFID systems.
- Do not assume “cashierless” means labor-free; automation can shift work into maintenance, support, validation and data labeling.
The precise verdict
The viral claim is misleading if it means workers manually watched every shopper and built every receipt. It is fair if it means Amazon’s supposedly cashierless system relied on substantial human labor, including training-data annotation and, according to reporting about its earlier operation, transaction review and purchase validation.
Just Walk Out was a real computer-vision and sensor system, but it was not a purely autonomous black box. Amazon’s grocery pullback reflects a mismatch between the technology and large-basket shopping, not proof that the product never existed. Its current human-review rate remains undisclosed.
