Short answer: Tumblr earns money from advertising, optional user purchases and parent-company support. Advertisers pay for access to Tumblr’s audience; users pay for Premium, Blaze promotion, TumblrMart digital goods and premium themes. Automattic owns Tumblr and provides shared infrastructure, but that internal support is not the same as a disclosed customer-revenue stream.

Tumblr’s free service follows a freemium model: advertising supports users who do not subscribe, while paid products add direct revenue. Tumblr’s help documentation says advertising pays for the resources and people needed to operate the service. Public sources do not disclose how much each product contributes.
Tumblr is a wholly owned subsidiary of Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com. Automattic said on that Tumblr had become more efficient and that its revenue had grown, but it did not publish product-level revenue, subscriber counts or profitability figures. Advertising supports the free tier
Tumblr sells advertising inventory in the dashboard, on blog pages and in its mobile apps. Its advertising documentation says ad selection can use the content being viewed, information supplied by users, browsing or search signals, app usage and interests. Current details should be checked in Tumblr’s advertising and privacy guidance.

Corporate campaigns can include sponsored placements and Tumblr takeovers. A post that looks sponsored is not necessarily sold by Tumblr, however. A user may independently publish a sponsorship, affiliate link or business promotion. Tumblr distinguishes those user-created posts from advertisements it sells itself.
What “ad-free” does and does not mean
Premium removes typical Tumblr advertisements, but Tumblr says subscribers may still see user-created sponsored posts, editorial promotions, dashboard tabs, takeovers, some promotions for Automattic products such as WordPress.com and, depending on settings, Blazed posts. Removing standard ads therefore does not remove every commercial message.
Tumblr Premium: recurring user revenue
Tumblr’s official help page documented U.S.-dollar prices of $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year when reviewed. Prices, taxes, currency conversion and app-store billing can change, so confirm the amount at checkout on the Premium page.

- One complimentary Blaze post each month for eligible users aged 18 or older.
- One complimentary TumblrMart item each month.
- Early access to features such as Communities and Patio.
- Higher publishing, liking, upload and queue limits.
- Controls to hide all ads, show all ads or show only Blaze ads.
Monthly benefits reset at midnight UTC. Subscriptions renew automatically until canceled. Apple and Google subscriptions are canceled through their respective stores, not necessarily through Tumblr’s website. Tumblr’s help page says Premium purchases are nonrefundable; the exact checkout terms govern.
Who is likely to benefit?
Premium is most defensible for a heavy Tumblr user who wants fewer standard ads, higher limits or the monthly perks. It is a poor fit for someone seeking guaranteed promotional reach, creator subscriptions or removal of every sponsored or editorial message.

Blaze is paid distribution, not creator pay
Blaze lets an adult user pay Tumblr to distribute an original post as a sponsored post. Targeting can include country, language and relevant tags or communities. The FAQ lists these packages:

Those figures are estimated audience sizes, not guaranteed impressions, clicks, likes, reblogs, follows or sales. Campaigns normally run for 24 hours, and one person may occasionally see a post more than once. Tumblr’s Blaze FAQ says engagement is not guaranteed.

- Only original posts can be Blazed, and the purchaser must be over 18.
- Mature or incorrectly labeled content may be rejected.
- Copyright infringement, deceptive claims, political advocacy, tobacco, hate, harassment, illegal drugs and other restricted categories can lead to rejection; Tumblr may decline a campaign at its discretion (rejection guidance).
- After activation, editing or deleting the post may be restricted.
- Refund rules differ between web, Android and iOS purchases.
The purchaser pays Tumblr for reach. The post’s author does not automatically receive money because a post is Blazed.

TumblrMart and digital goods
TumblrMart documents Premium, Blaze, supporter and other badges, gifts such as dashboard crabs and related digital items. It is better understood as a platform storefront than as a conventional merchandise business; the public documentation does not provide a current product-level revenue split.
Web transactions are processed through Stripe and billed in U.S. dollars. Mobile purchases generally use Apple’s App Store or Google Play billing and the local app-store currency. Payment flow can vary by product and device.

Premium themes are a separate purchase
Tumblr sells premium themes through the Theme Garden and a blog’s Customizer. A theme changes the blog’s public web appearance, such as blogname.tumblr.com; it is not a subscription to the dashboard feed and is separate from Premium.
Tumblr’s theme documentation confirms the purchase route but does not establish current theme prices, designer commission rates, payout schedules, buyer counts or whether new designer submissions are open. No specific creator split should be assumed.

Not through a broad, current program comparable to YouTube’s advertising share, TikTok creator funds or Patreon memberships, based on Tumblr’s current official paid-feature documentation. Tumblr tipping ended on June 1, 2024; remaining balances were scheduled for payment by June 15, 2024. Treat tipping and similar experiments as historical, not as current income options (paid-feature eligibility).

Creators can still use Tumblr for discovery and send supporters to commissions, stores, memberships, newsletters, donations or affiliate offers elsewhere. Tumblr permits affiliate links when users follow its guidelines and do not create blogs whose primary purpose is affiliate marketing. Those earnings come from the outside service or customer, not from Tumblr’s advertising pool.
What creators should not expect
- Automatic payment for views or reblogs.
- A guaranteed advertising-revenue percentage.
- Built-in recurring fan subscriptions.
- Current tipping or platform-funded creator bonuses.
Automattic’s role is support, not a disclosed revenue line
Automattic can provide Tumblr with infrastructure, engineering, shared systems, cross-product promotion and operational support. It announced work toward running Tumblr’s backend on WordPress infrastructure so features could be built once and deployed across platforms. That may lower costs or improve leverage, but it does not prove that Automattic is a customer buying Tumblr’s inventory or that the transfer is recorded as Tumblr revenue. Blaze can suit low-budget experiments, Tumblr-native art, fandom or community content and interest-based discovery. - Total Tumblr revenue and profitability.
- Revenue by advertising, Premium, Blaze, TumblrMart or themes.
- Premium subscriber count and advertising-sales volume.
- Any general creator advertising-revenue share.
- Current theme-designer commissions and payout schedules.
The evidence supports a hybrid advertising-and-paid-features model, not a precise ranking of which stream is largest.
The Bottom Line
Tumblr is best understood as free social publishing funded by advertising and supplemented by user-paid subscriptions, promotion and digital goods. Creators may earn through businesses they connect to Tumblr, but Tumblr itself is not currently documented as a broad creator-revenue-share platform.
