That is not an iPhone-hardware surcharge or a universal rule. The exact result depends on the app, country, plan, date, promotion, taxes and whether you subscribe in the app or on the company’s website.
The short answer: compare the billing route, not the phone
The same service can show three prices: one for Apple in-app billing, one for Google Play Billing and another for the company’s website. Developers decide whether to absorb store costs, pass some of them to customers, keep prices equal, or offer different plans and promotions.

Apple’s standard contractual App Store commission is generally 30%. Qualifying small developers may receive a 15% rate, and auto-renewing subscriptions generally move to 15% after a customer has accumulated more than one year of paid service in the relevant subscription group. Program, regional and contractual exceptions apply. See Apple’s published schedules.
Google also charges service fees. In many markets, auto-renewing subscriptions have generally been listed at 15%. Google’s US, UK and European Economic Area changes began rolling out on June 30, 2026; its newer framework generally lists 10% for auto-renewing subscriptions, with distinctions based on billing method and program participation. Rates vary by transaction and market. See Google’s fee overview and the 2026 framework.

How a store commission can change the listed price
A commission is deducted from the listed price; it is not automatically added on top. Suppose a developer wants to keep $10 before taxes and other costs:
| Listed price | Illustrative platform fee | Amount left before taxes and other costs |
|---|---|---|
| $10.00 | 30% | $7.00 |
| $10.00 | 15% | $8.50 |
| $12.00 | 30% | $8.40 |
| $14.29 | 30% | About $10.00 |
The break-even calculation is desired net revenue ÷ (1 − fee). At 30%, $10 ÷ 0.70 = $14.29. At 15%, $10 ÷ 0.85 = $11.76. Thus a 30% commission does not mean the customer price must be exactly 30% higher; preserving the same net amount implies about a 42.9% markup over a no-commission $10 price. These are illustrations: taxes, refunds, withholding, payment processing and contract terms can change actual proceeds.

Apple, Google Play and web checkout compared
| Purchase route | Fee signal | What the developer controls | Consumer trade-off | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple in-app purchase | Generally 30%; 15% programs and subscription-renewal exceptions exist | Can absorb the cost, change the price, or offer a different plan | Centralized Apple billing, cancellation and familiar refund path | Rules depend on storefront, app category, entitlement and region |
| Google Play Billing | Often 15% for auto-renewing subscriptions; 2026 US/UK/EEA rules can list 10% plus billing-method distinctions | Can select eligible billing programs and pricing | Google account payment methods and subscription management | Alternative billing and external links may still carry applicable Play fees |
| Company website | No ordinary App Store or Play in-app commission, but card, wallet, tax, fraud and dispute costs remain | Owns checkout, promotions and customer relationship | May be cheaper or have better annual offers | Refunds, family sharing, gift-card use and cancellation follow the company’s system |
Google’s documentation says service fees can still apply when developers use alternative billing or external links. Details are in Google’s 2026 fee guidance and alternative-billing information.
Why the website may be cheaper
A direct checkout can leave more room for a lower price, a longer trial, an annual discount or a bundle. The business still pays card or wallet processing, fraud prevention, tax collection, subscription infrastructure, support, refunds and chargebacks. The meaningful comparison is the total platform economics, not “Apple adds a tax at checkout.”

Some services therefore let the iPhone app provide login and access but not signup. Reader apps for books, music, video, magazines and similar content can let customers access purchases made elsewhere, and eligible apps can apply for Apple’s External Link Account Entitlement. Apple describes these arrangements in its reader-app guidance. Whether an app may show a purchase button or link depends on its category, entitlement, storefront and current rules.
Policy exceptions make “Apple always forces billing” inaccurate
Apple’s App Review Guidelines describe exceptions and regional arrangements, including reader apps, certain external-link entitlements and US storefront rules. EU and other regional requirements can differ. Google’s US external-content-link program is tied to a US District Court order and may change; Google’s July 22, 2026 update says enrolled developers must report relevant transactions and pay applicable Play fees beginning October 1, 2026. See Google’s US program documentation. Recheck these policies before relying on a particular link or checkout flow.

Other reasons two platform prices differ
- Region and tax: Match the Apple or Google account country, currency and whether tax is included.
- Plan details: Monthly, annual, family, student and business plans may not be equivalent.
- Introductory offers: A low first month can hide a higher renewal price.
- Customer status: New subscribers, existing customers and returning users may see different offers.
- Features and app versions: iOS and Android releases may not have feature parity.
- Localized price tiers: Currency conversion and rounded storefront tiers can produce different amounts.
- Promotions and testing: A temporary discount or an experiment may appear on only one platform.
- Commercial strategy: A company may price by perceived value, conversion rates or operating costs. A difference alone does not prove that iPhone users are being targeted because they are wealthier or more willing to pay.
The developer normally configures the price or storefront tier. The store applies its rules, taxes and localization; it does not secretly choose a universal iPhone markup.
How to compare a subscription without paying twice
- Open the service’s official website and the official iPhone or Android listing; avoid unsolicited discount links.
- Record the country and currency shown in each place.
- Match the exact plan name and included features.
- Match monthly versus annual billing and the trial length.
- Write down both the introductory price and the renewal price.
- Check whether displayed taxes are included or added at checkout.
- Confirm new-customer eligibility and any promotional expiry.
- Verify that a web purchase uses the same email or account and unlocks the mobile app.
- If replacing an Apple or Google subscription, cancel the old one first when the service requires it; cancellation often leaves access active until the current period ends.
- Check the billing account after purchase so you know whether Apple, Google or the company is charging you.
Apple explains subscription management and price-change handling in its support guidance.

Should you subscribe on the web?
When web checkout can make sense
- The identical plan has a lower recurring or annual price.
- You want the developer to avoid ordinary store commission, while recognizing that other payment costs remain.
- You prefer the company’s promotional codes, invoices or account portal.
When store billing can be worth the premium
- You value one place for cancellation, billing history and payment methods.
- You use an Apple or Google gift-card balance or a supported family-sharing arrangement.
- You prefer the store’s familiar refund process and do not want a separate web account.
Neither route is automatically better. Confirm account compatibility and cancellation terms before switching, because opening a second subscription can create duplicate charges.
Common misconceptions
- “Apple’s 30% means the iPhone price must be 30% higher.” No. The fee is taken from the listed price; the required markup to preserve net revenue is calculated by dividing by 0.70.
- “Google Play is fee-free.” No. Google publishes service fees and introduced additional 2026 structures.
- “Every iPhone app must use Apple billing.” No. Category, region, entitlement and current law matter.
- “The website is always cheapest.” Developers can keep prices equal or run different promotions.
- “A cheaper Android price proves Apple set it.” Pricing is generally a developer decision influenced by fees, taxes, strategy and promotions.
- “The cheapest display is the best deal.” Renewal terms, refund rights, family features and account management may differ.
Bottom line
An iPhone subscription may be higher when Apple’s billing economics reduce the developer’s proceeds or limit its preferred checkout. Android may be cheaper because Google’s applicable fee or program differs, or because the developer promotes Android or web checkout. But developers can also absorb fees, keep parity, or charge more on Android. Compare the same plan, region, tax treatment and renewal price through the official channels before deciding.
