Yes. You can stop paying monthly for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, but the alternatives differ. Microsoft offers free browser versions, a one-time desktop purchase called Office Home 2024, and Microsoft 365 subscriptions for people who need cloud storage, multiple devices, or continuously updated features.

Use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint free in a browser
Go to Microsoft365.com, sign in with a Microsoft account, and select Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. You can create files, edit documents stored in your account’s cloud storage, share them, and download local copies.
- Open Microsoft365.com.
- Sign in or create a Microsoft account.
- Choose Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
- Create a file or open one from your online storage.
- Rename or download the file if you need a local copy.
A “Free” indication after sign-in means the web apps are available without an active Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription. These are browser applications, not the complete desktop editions. Their feature set is narrower, and reliable offline desktop work is not the same experience.

If a paywall appears
- Confirm that you opened the web app rather than an installed desktop application.
- Check that you are signed into the intended personal account.
- Work or school accounts may have different licensing.
- The requested feature may exist only in the desktop edition.
- Return to Microsoft365.com and launch the browser version if an unlicensed desktop app is requesting a subscription.
Buy Office Home 2024 once for desktop use
Office Home 2024 is Microsoft’s straightforward non-subscription choice. The U.S. Microsoft Store listing showed $149.99 one time when checked on August 16, 2026. It includes Word 2024, Excel 2024, PowerPoint 2024, and OneNote 2024 for one PC or Mac and is designated for non-commercial use. See the product listing.
This is a one-time purchase of the 2024 edition, not a promise of every future Office release. A later major version generally requires a new purchase, and the package does not include the full Microsoft 365 service bundle, such as subscription cloud storage, continuing feature releases, or premium services including Defender, Clipchamp benefits, and premium Copilot features.

Offline use and activation
The installed desktop apps are suited to local work, but Office Home 2024 is not entirely independent of the internet. Microsoft requires internet access to redeem and associate the product, activate the applications, and periodically keep them activated. It is non-recurring, not internet-free.
Compatibility requirements
Microsoft’s current requirements page lists Windows 11 on PC, the three most recent supported macOS versions, 4 GB of RAM, 4 GB of available Windows disk space (10 GB on macOS), and a 1.1 GHz or faster two-core Windows processor. Because Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, rely on the current requirements page rather than older Store wording that may still mention Windows 10.

Which choice fits your situation?
- Occasional home use: Start with the free web apps.
- One computer and full desktop software: Office Home 2024 may be the better long-term value.
- Laptop, desktop, and mobile devices: Microsoft 365 Personal avoids the one-device restriction.
- Several household users: Microsoft 365 Family supports up to six people; verify its current price on the live Store page.
- Advanced Excel work: Test macros, VBA, Power Query, add-ins, data models, external connections, and large workbooks before switching from Microsoft 365 or the web app.
- Business work: Office Home 2024 is marked non-commercial; check your organization’s business licensing, security, storage, and collaboration requirements.
- Mac: Confirm that your exact macOS version is among the three currently supported versions.
Features and files that deserve testing
Microsoft describes Office 2024 as a subset of Microsoft 365 Apps. Cloud-backed Excel data types, newer AI capabilities, some collaboration behavior, and connected services can differ by app, account, and file location. A newer Microsoft 365 file should usually open, but subscription-only features may not behave identically.

Before canceling, open your most important documents, complex workbooks, and presentations in the proposed replacement. Pay particular attention to macros and add-ins, unusual fonts, embedded objects, advanced media, charts, and collaboration metadata.

Google’s web apps are strong for browser collaboration and shared files. Formatting and advanced Excel compatibility can vary, and you are moving into Google’s cloud ecosystem rather than eliminating cloud dependence.

LibreOffice
LibreOffice is a free desktop suite suited to local and offline work. Microsoft formatting, VBA, complex spreadsheets, and PowerPoint layouts may require testing.
Apple iWork
Pages, Numbers, and Keynote can cover ordinary work on Apple devices. They are not one-for-one replacements for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, especially for complex Excel files, macros, and exact formatting.
Before canceling Microsoft 365
- Verify that OneDrive files are downloaded or accessible through another account or local copy.
- List subscription-only features, Copilot use, and services you depend on.
- Count the computers and mobile devices using the subscription.
- Check whether relatives use a Family plan.
- Confirm that work or school policies do not require organizational licensing.
- Test essential files in Office Home 2024 or your chosen alternative.
Microsoft also offers standalone consumer app purchases, but pricing for individual Word, Excel, or PowerPoint licenses changes and was not established here. Do not assume buying three apps separately costs less than Office Home 2024.
Students and educators may have another route
Eligible students and teachers may receive Office 365 Education, potentially including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Teams, and other tools. Eligibility depends on the institution and verification; it is not a universal free offer.
