The 4 Best Cheap Laptops for 2026: Apple’s MacBook Neo Made the List

The MacBook Neo makes Apple’s lineup more affordable, but it is not automatically the best cheap laptop. Compare macOS, Windows, ChromeOS and refurbished options by configuration and use case.

Short answer: “Cheap” in 2026 usually means under $500, but the best long-term value may cost $500–$700. Apple’s MacBook Neo is notable because it brings macOS and Apple silicon to a lower price tier; it is affordable by Apple standards, not the cheapest laptop available. For a browser-first workflow, choose a Chromebook. For Windows software, choose a carefully specified Windows laptop. If new budget models are compromised, a recent refurbished business laptop can be the smarter purchase.

The roundup associated with Mashable identifies the MacBook Neo, Acer Aspire 16 AI and Acer Chromebook Plus 516, but the available source material does not reliably establish the fourth product, exact rankings, configurations or August 2026 prices. The recommendations below separate verified product facts from buying advice rather than guessing at a missing pick.

What “cheap” means for a laptop in 2026

Use these bands when setting expectations:

  • Under $300: Usually entry-level Chromebooks or heavily compromised Windows laptops.
  • $300–$500: The traditional budget range for web use, schoolwork, streaming and office applications.
  • $500–$700: Increasingly important as memory and storage costs rise; this is where 16GB RAM, a 512GB SSD and better screens become more attainable.
  • $700–$1,000: Not normally cheap, but often better value for coding, photo work, sustained multitasking or gaming.

This guide treats “cheap” as affordable relative to the wider laptop market, with most recommendations expected below or around $500 when the exact configuration is confirmed. Prices change around sales and launches, so verify the exact US model and price on August 18, 2026.

Quick comparison

Laptop Best for Operating system Verified facts Main caution
Apple MacBook Neo Affordable macOS and iPhone integration macOS 13-inch Liquid Retina display, A18 Pro chip, Apple-claimed up to 16-hour battery, 1080p camera, two USB-C ports US price, base RAM/storage and independent testing are not established here
Acer Aspire 16 AI Large-screen Windows productivity Windows Identified as a Mashable-reviewed model family Exact SKU, processor, RAM, storage, display and price must be checked
Acer Chromebook Plus 516 Browser-first school and office work ChromeOS Associated with the roundup and sub-$500 category Exact configuration, price and Auto Update Expiration require confirmation
Recent refurbished business laptop Maximum specifications per dollar Usually Windows Wirecutter recommends considering refurbished machines as budget prices rise Seller, warranty, battery health and lock status vary

Apple MacBook Neo: the cheap Mac option

Apple’s official page lists the MacBook Neo with a 13-inch Liquid Retina display rated at 500 nits, approximately 3.6 million pixels and support for one billion colors. It uses Apple’s A18 Pro chip, includes a 1080p FaceTime HD camera, two USB-C ports and a headphone jack, and comes in Silver, Blush, Citrus and Indigo. Apple claims up to 16 hours of battery life and says Apple Intelligence is integrated. Those battery, AI, recycled-content and update statements are Apple claims, not independent test results. Why it can be good value

  • macOS, Apple silicon and a compact form factor at a lower-than-usual Mac price.
  • Useful continuity with an iPhone, including calls and texts, Handoff, iPhone Mirroring, AirDrop, Instant Hotspot and Universal Clipboard.
  • A 1080p camera and high-resolution display that may be preferable to the panels and webcams on many entry-level laptops.

Who should skip it

  • Anyone who needs Windows-only school, accounting, engineering or business software.
  • Buyers seeking the lowest possible upfront price.
  • People who require upgradeable RAM or storage; confirm the configuration before purchase.

Compare the exact Neo configuration with a similarly priced Windows laptop or Chromebook. A retailer snippet showing about $589 is not a reliable current list price or configuration reference, so do not use it as a buying benchmark without checking the listing.

Acer Aspire 16 AI: a Windows pick only when the SKU is right

Search results identify the Acer Aspire 16 AI as one of the laptops reviewed in the Mashable roundup, but they do not establish the model number, processor, memory, storage, panel, battery results or price. Start with Acer’s Aspire product page, then match the retailer’s exact SKU.

What to verify

  • Intel, AMD or Arm processor and its performance class.
  • At least 16GB RAM for long-term Windows multitasking when the premium is reasonable.
  • A real SSD, preferably 512GB or more, rather than small eMMC storage.
  • Screen resolution, brightness, webcam quality, port selection and upgradeability.
  • Whether an NPU and Copilot+ features provide a real benefit for your workload.

“AI” on the box is not, by itself, a reason to buy. For most students and office users, additional RAM and storage are more useful than an AI label.

Acer Chromebook Plus 516: best for browser-first buyers

The Acer Chromebook Plus 516 is associated with the roundup and with the sub-$500 category, but its exact configuration and current price still need confirmation. Check Acer’s Chromebook Plus page and the retailer’s model number.

  • GeForce RTX 5070 With Ray Tracing & DLSS 4: Powered by NVIDIA Blackwell, the RTX 5070 delivers stronger ray tracing, higher FPS, faster AI upscaling, and more responsive gameplay—ideal for competitive and cinematic gaming.
  • QHD 165Hz, 100% DCI-P3 for Ultra-Clear Combat: The QHD 165Hz display reveals more detail, reduces motion blur, and boosts visibility in fast-paced games while delivering richer, more accurate colors.
  • Cooler Boost 5 for Sustained Performance: Dual fans and a 5-heat-pipe share-pipe design keep the CPU and GPU cool, maintaining stable frame rates during long gaming marathons.

ChromeOS is a good fit when

  • Your work is primarily browser-based: Google Workspace, email, streaming and web applications.
  • You want automatic updates and simple maintenance.
  • You do not need traditional Windows or macOS desktop applications.

Check before buying

  • The device’s Auto Update Expiration date.
  • Android and Linux application support.
  • Microsoft 365, printer, VPN and exam-proctoring compatibility.
  • RAM, storage, webcam, screen brightness, ports and the exact sale condition.

Chromebook Plus models are generally better equipped than basic Chromebooks, but ChromeOS is not a universal Windows replacement.

The fourth practical choice: a recent refurbished business laptop

The fourth Mashable product cannot be responsibly identified from the available source material. Rather than invent a model, consider a refurbished recent Lenovo ThinkPad, Dell Latitude or HP EliteBook when a new sub-$500 laptop would have 8GB RAM, 256GB storage or a weak display. Wirecutter’s June 2026 discussion notes that rising memory and storage costs make refurbished machines worth considering; see The Wirecutter Show discussion.

  • Any system: Record the exact model number, processor, RAM, storage, screen, weight, price date, retailer and warranty.

Choose by operating system

Choose macOS

Choose the MacBook Neo if you use an iPhone, value Apple continuity and all required applications run on macOS. Confirm software, peripherals and institutional requirements first.

Choose Windows

Choose Windows for the broadest application, game, accessory and peripheral compatibility. Treat each SKU separately: a strong Aspire configuration and a weak Aspire configuration are different purchases.

Choose ChromeOS

Choose ChromeOS for browser-first work, low maintenance and a lower price. Confirm every required app and the update-support date.

When spending more is the cheaper decision

Move toward $600–$800 when you need sustained multitasking, coding, photo or video work, larger local storage, better build quality or gaming capability. A low sticker price can become poor value if you immediately need external storage, a hub, cloud storage or a replacement battery.

For gaming, identify the GPU, games, settings, refresh rate, cooling and noise; casual or cloud gaming does not make a laptop a general gaming machine. For creative work, memory and storage usually matter more than an AI badge. Prices may be manufacturer list prices, temporary promotions, coupons or refurbished prices—never treat them as interchangeable.

Bottom line by buyer

  • Best cheap Mac: MacBook Neo, if macOS compatibility and the confirmed configuration fit your budget.
  • Best browser-first option: Acer Chromebook Plus 516, after checking storage and Auto Update Expiration.
  • Best Windows value: Acer Aspire 16 AI only after verifying its exact SKU and specifications.
  • Best specifications per dollar: A recent refurbished ThinkPad, Latitude or EliteBook from a reputable seller.
  • Best for demanding work: Spend beyond the entry tier rather than accepting 4GB RAM or tiny storage.

For official buying pages, compare the MacBook Neo, MacBook Air, Lenovo laptops, HP laptops and Dell laptops by exact configuration rather than family name.
