The payment concerns a court-approved Canadian iPhone Power Management class-action settlement from 2024. An approved claimant may receive up to C$150 per eligible claim or device, but the final amount is not guaranteed. The ordinary claim deadline—September 2, 2024—has passed.
The latest accessible report, published May 8, 2026, said payments had not yet been issued while claim contestations were being reviewed. Because that update came from reporting rather than a newer official administrator notice, claimants should check the official settlement site for their individual status.
What the Canadian settlement actually is
The case is a Canadian class action involving Apple Inc. and Apple Canada Inc. The British Columbia Supreme Court approved the settlement on March 4, 2024. Under the approved terms, Apple agreed to fund between C$11,137,500 and C$14,427,500, subject to the settlement’s distribution rules and deductions.
The court-approved notice describes the settlement as a compromise of disputed claims. Apple did not admit liability, wrongdoing or fault. The allegations concerned software power-management features on older iPhones, degraded batteries, unexpected shutdowns and related performance problems. The short-form notice records those allegations and the settlement terms: official short-form settlement notice.

The separate California matter sometimes mentioned in coverage involved U.S. claims and is background, not the Canadian settlement: California Attorney General background.
Who was covered?
Ownership alone did not establish eligibility. A claimant also had to meet the model, software, timing, geographic and claims-procedure requirements in the settlement.

The defined class covered people domiciled in Canada, but Quebec residents were excluded from the class definition as of the relevant settlement date. The proceedings involved claims in British Columbia, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta. The model, software and geographic definitions appear in the official short-form notice.
How much will an approved claimant receive?
C$150 is a ceiling, not a promised cheque. The long-form notice says the amount paid to each approved claimant depends on the number of valid approved claims and the money remaining after settlement deductions. Relevant factors include:

- the total number of approved claims;
- class counsel fees;
- claims-administration expenses;
- other court-approved payments or deductions; and
- the settlement’s distribution protocol.
Accordingly, the available documents do not establish a final individual payment amount. The settlement fund range and maximum payment are set out in the official long-form notice.
Can someone still submit a new claim?
Under the ordinary process, no. The court-approved deadline was September 2, 2024. A person who never filed should not assume that pending payments mean the claims window has reopened. Only an explicit announcement from the administrator about an exceptional late-claim process would change that position.

How existing claimants can check their status
People who already submitted a claim should use the administrator’s official channels rather than third-party services:
- Open smartphoneperformancesettlement.ca.
- Use the claim-status chatbot, where available.
- Have the claim number and the affected device’s serial number ready.
- Check the email address used for the claim, physical mail and spam or junk folders.
- If clarification is needed, use only the administrator or class-counsel contact details published on the official website.
A May 8, 2026 report said the chatbot used a claim number and device serial number and that the administrator was still reviewing claim contestations: iPhone in Canada’s May 8, 2026 report. That report did not provide a final payment amount or confirmed completion date. The official website remains the appropriate place to verify an individual claim.

Why have payments taken so long?
The latest accessible update said claim contestations—disputes or challenges concerning claims—were still under review. That process can affect how many claims are ultimately approved and therefore how the available fund is divided. No final distribution amount was confirmed in that update.
Because status can change after a news report, a claimant should rely on a direct administrator notice or the official claim-status tool for a current decision. Do not treat an old article saying that payments were pending as proof that a payment is still pending today.
What the settlement does not mean
- It is not a new nationwide Apple payment. Canadian iPhone ownership today does not automatically create an entitlement.
- It is not a guaranteed C$150 refund. The cap applies only to an approved claim or device, and the actual distribution may be lower.
- It is not a finding that Apple was liable. The settlement resolves disputed allegations without an admission of wrongdoing.
- It is not a battery-replacement program. Apple’s current repair and battery-service options are separate from the class action. See Apple’s Canadian battery-service page.
- It is not the same as U.S. litigation. Reports about American settlements do not establish eligibility or payment terms in Canada.
Settlement releases and opting out
The court-approved notice says the settlement releases claims that were or could have been asserted in the proceedings, subject to the settlement terms, and that the settlement is the means of compensation for those claims. That language concerns the defined class and the released claims; it is not a general waiver of every unrelated complaint about an Apple product. Anyone with questions about an individual legal position should read the notice and obtain independent legal advice.
Protect yourself from payment scams
Pending class-action payments create opportunities for fraud. The administrator should not require a fee to “unlock” a settlement payment. Do not send your claim number, device serial number, banking details or identity documents to a social-media account, an unsolicited caller or a site that is not linked from the official settlement website.
- Use the official settlement website directly rather than a search-ad link.
- Do not pay a recovery service or middleman to file a late claim.
- Keep copies of claim confirmations and administrator correspondence.
- Remember that a serial number helps verify a device; it does not by itself guarantee approval or payment.
Bottom line for Canadian iPhone owners
This is a 2024-approved settlement whose ordinary claim deadline has already expired, not an August 2026 announcement that Apple is paying every Canadian customer. People with approved claims may receive less than C$150, and the latest accessible May 2026 report said distribution was still delayed by claim review. Existing claimants should check the official settlement website with their claim number and device serial number; people who never filed should not assume they can still join.
