The Lightning name will continue on a planned extended-range electric pickup, while Ford Energy is being built to supply large battery systems to utilities, data centers and industrial customers.
What Ford changed
Ford made the decision on December 11, 2025 to rationalize its electric-vehicle manufacturing capacity and product roadmap. Its December 15 announcement confirmed that production of the current-generation F-150 Lightning had concluded.
| Date | Change | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| December 11, 2025 | Ford approved a revised EV manufacturing and product plan | The plan included ending production of the current-generation Lightning. |
| December 15, 2025 | Ford announced the production shutdown | Employees were being redeployed to the Dearborn Truck Plant to support a third crew for gas and hybrid truck production after the Novelis fires. |
| May 11, 2026 | Ford formally introduced Ford Energy | The wholly owned subsidiary will develop U.S.-assembled battery-energy-storage systems for large commercial customers. |
Why Ford ended current F-150 Lightning production
Ford said the large-EV roadmap no longer offered a profitable path under changed market conditions. The company cited several connected pressures rather than a single technical problem with the pickup.
- EV adoption was lower than expected. Ford said industrywide electric-vehicle uptake had not reached the levels assumed in its earlier plans.
- Costs remained high. The expense of developing and manufacturing large electric vehicles made the business case harder to support.
- Pricing dynamics changed. Market pricing and incentives reduced the returns Ford expected from large battery-electric vehicles.
- Policy and regulatory conditions shifted. Ford’s SEC filing said market, policy and regulatory changes contributed to the decision.
- EV capacity was underused. Ford said some electric-vehicle manufacturing capacity was not being used at a level that justified keeping the original roadmap.
Ford President and CEO Jim Farley described the move as “a customer-driven shift to create a stronger, more resilient and more profitable Ford.” The company says it is redirecting capital toward Ford Pro, trucks and vans, hybrids, affordable EVs and battery storage.

Is the Ford F-150 Lightning discontinued?
The current-generation battery-electric Lightning is discontinued as a production vehicle: Ford ended its manufacturing in 2025. The Lightning name itself is not being retired.
The planned replacement is an EREV
Ford says the next-generation F-150 Lightning will be an extended-range electric vehicle, or EREV. Its wheels will still be driven entirely by electric motors, but a high-power generator will supply electricity when needed. Ford estimates more than 700 miles of range and says the truck will retain near-instant electric torque and towing capability.
Ford has not disclosed the next-generation truck’s launch date. It says the vehicle will be assembled at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center and that additional timing and product details will come later.

What is Ford Energy?
Ford Energy is a wholly owned Ford Motor Company subsidiary focused on U.S.-assembled battery-energy-storage systems, or BESS. Its stated customers are utilities, data centers and large industrial and commercial users in the United States. This is a business-to-business operation, not a consumer home-battery product announced for retail sale.

Ford plans to repurpose existing battery capacity in Glendale, Kentucky, to build systems of 5 megawatt-hours or more, along with lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) prismatic cells, modules and 20-foot direct-current container systems. Ford has said it expects to invest roughly $2 billion over two years.
The company plans to move the Kentucky battery plants to a Ford subsidiary after the BlueOval SK transaction closes, subject to required approvals. Ford Energy’s stated deployment target is at least 20 gigawatt-hours annually, with first customer deliveries planned for late 2027.

Ford Energy’s battery-storage products
The flagship product announced by Ford Energy is the DC block, a standardized 20-foot containerized system built around 512 amp-hour LFP prismatic cells. Ford lists two configurations:
| Configuration | Discharge duration listed by Ford | Common platform details |
|---|---|---|
| FE-250 | Two-hour system | 20-foot DC block, 512 Ah LFP prismatic cells, liquid cooling and battery-management system |
| FE-450 | Four-hour system | 20-foot DC block, 512 Ah LFP prismatic cells, liquid cooling and battery-management system |
Ford’s May 11, 2026 announcement does not state a separate exact megawatt-hour rating for each FE-250 or FE-450 configuration. The broader program is described as producing systems of 5 MWh or more.
Financial and operational consequences
Ford’s December 2025 release projected approximately $19.5 billion in special items, including about $5.5 billion of cash effects. Ford expected most of those cash payments in 2026 and the remainder in 2027.

People shopping for an electric pickup
A new current-generation Lightning will no longer be coming from Ford’s production line. The next Lightning is planned as an EREV rather than a purely battery-electric truck, so buyers who want a future Lightning will need to wait for Ford to publish launch details.
Current Lightning owners
The production announcement concerns manufacturing of the current generation. It does not state that the Lightning name or the existing vehicle platform is being withdrawn from service.

Ford employees
Ford said employees from the Lightning operation would be redeployed to the Dearborn Truck Plant, where a third crew would support gas and hybrid truck production after the Novelis fires.
Utilities and large power users
Ford Energy is aimed at grid-scale and behind-the-meter commercial applications, including data centers and industrial facilities. Its first customer deliveries are planned for late 2027, so the announcement establishes a future supply program rather than current retail availability.
Investors and household financial planners
The immediate financial story is a large restructuring and capacity reset: Ford expects billions of dollars in special items and cash effects while shifting investment toward trucks, hybrids, affordable EVs and storage. The long-term outcome depends on execution of the Kentucky transition, customer demand for the new storage systems and the eventual launch economics of the EREV Lightning.
What remains uncertain
- Ford has not announced a launch date, pricing or final specifications for the next-generation Lightning EREV.
- The Kentucky battery-plant transfer depends on closing the BlueOval SK transaction and obtaining required approvals.
- Ford’s 20 GWh annual deployment goal and late-2027 first-delivery date are plans, not completed deliveries.
- The announced storage configurations do not establish contract prices, customer names or a consumer purchasing channel.
Bottom line
Ford has ended the current all-electric F-150 Lightning because it no longer sees the original large-EV plan as profitable under present adoption, cost, pricing and policy conditions. It is keeping the Lightning name for a future generator-backed electric pickup while using its Kentucky battery capacity to build Ford Energy, a commercial storage business targeting utilities, data centers and industrial customers from late 2027.
