What Are Crypto Derivatives? Types, Features, and Where to Trade

Crypto derivatives are financial contracts whose value follows a cryptocurrency or crypto price index. The main types are dated futures, options, and perpetual contracts. They can provide long or short price exposure without buying the coin itself, but margin and leverage can make losses develop quickly.

The right product depends on whether you need a defined expiration, a contractual right rather than an obligation, or an instrument with no ordinary expiry. Venue rules, jurisdiction, collateral, and liquidation procedures matter as much as the product name.

What a crypto derivative actually gives you

A derivative references an underlying cryptocurrency or an index rather than transferring ownership of that asset. Your position is governed by a contract that specifies how exposure is created, margined, and settled.

  • Long exposure: you benefit if the contract’s reference price rises, subject to the contract’s settlement and margin rules.
  • Short exposure: you benefit if the reference price falls, without borrowing or selling the coin in a spot market.
  • No automatic coin custody: some products, including CME’s cryptocurrency futures, are designed to provide price exposure without holding the underlying coin or keeping it in a wallet.

Futures and options generally trade through registered exchanges and intermediaries, according to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). A venue’s regulatory status does not make every product available to every customer or eliminate trading risk.

The three main types of crypto derivatives

Dated futures

A futures contract is a standardized agreement creating a long or short obligation under stated terms. It has a defined contract period or expiration and settles according to the exchange’s rules. Contract specifications determine the underlying reference, size, tick value, margin, final settlement, and other obligations.

CME describes its cryptocurrency futures as a way to trade price movements in either direction without owning the coin. The exchange publishes contract specifications and margin information for each product, so the practical exposure is product-specific rather than a single standard for all crypto futures.

Options

An option gives the purchaser a right under specified terms, rather than describing the buyer as having the same obligation as a futures participant. The CFTC defines a commodity futures option this way: "A commodity futures option gives the purchaser the right to buy or sell a particular futures contract at a future date for a particular price."

The contract states the relevant futures contract or asset, the date, and the price at which the right applies. The seller’s obligations and the option’s settlement method are also defined by the contract. At CME, some cryptocurrency options terminate into the underlying futures contract and use benchmarks such as the CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate or Ether-Dollar Reference Rate.

Perpetual contracts

Perpetual contracts have no fixed expiration date. The CFTC describes crypto asset perpetual contracts as derivative contracts designed to maintain price parity with the spot price of the underlying asset they reference.

Because there is no ordinary expiry to pull the contract toward spot, each venue must use its own alignment design. Funding payments or other mechanisms may be involved, but the amount, timing, index, and triggers vary by venue. Read the current product documentation instead of assuming that one platform’s perpetual rules apply elsewhere.

Features that determine your real exposure

Margin, leverage, and liquidation

Margin is collateral posted for a position. Leverage lets a relatively small margin deposit control a larger notional exposure. That magnifies the effect of a price move in both directions: losses can accelerate, and a position can be liquidated when the account no longer meets the venue’s margin requirements.

Before trading, identify the initial and maintenance margin, how the venue values collateral, what events trigger liquidation, and whether the venue can close positions in stages or all at once. The headline leverage setting is not a substitute for reading those rules.

Settlement and benchmarks

Settlement determines how gains, losses, and expiration are calculated. A contract may settle in cash, into another derivative, or under another method specified in its terms. Benchmark selection also matters: CME documentation identifies the CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate and Ether-Dollar Reference Rate for relevant products.

Never assume that the last traded price on one spot exchange is the settlement price. Use the benchmark and settlement procedure stated in the exact contract specification.

Hedging versus speculation

Futures and options can help a holder protect against virtual-currency price volatility. For example, a holder may use a short derivative position to offset some downside in an existing exposure. The same instruments can also be used to speculate on a price move without owning the coin.

The CFTC warns that speculation in virtual-currency futures and options should be considered a high-risk transaction. A hedge can reduce one risk while introducing margin calls, basis differences, settlement uncertainty, and counterparty or operational exposure.

Where can you trade crypto derivatives?

Availability depends on the customer’s location, the product, account eligibility, and current rules. The following comparison identifies what the venues’ published descriptions establish and what must be checked before opening a position.

Comparison point CME Group Coinbase Derivatives
Jurisdiction and regulator Cryptocurrency futures and options are listed on a U.S.-registered designated contract market and derivatives clearing organization regulated by the CFTC, according to CME. Coinbase describes a crypto-focused futures exchange. Its U.S. perpetual-style futures are described as intended to track spot prices, provide leverage, and remain compliant with CFTC requirements. Confirm the current registration, product authorization, and your jurisdiction.
Products Dated cryptocurrency futures and options; the cited CME materials do not establish perpetual contracts. Multiple asset classes and contract sizes, including U.S. perpetual-style futures. The available lineup changes by jurisdiction and eligibility.
Contract size and settlement Contract-specific specifications; some options terminate into the underlying futures contract and use stated CME CF reference rates. Not stated as one universal schedule; check the exact contract’s size, index, settlement, and expiration or perpetual terms.
Margin, leverage, and liquidation CME publishes margin estimates and contract specifications, but requirements and liquidation consequences are product-specific. Leverage is part of the described perpetual-style offering; current margin, maintenance, and liquidation rules must be confirmed for the individual contract.
Liquidity and spreads Not stated as a single comparable figure; compare the particular contract’s order book and trading hours. Not stated as a single comparable figure; inspect current depth and spread for the product and session you plan to trade.
Fees Not stated as one all-in figure; review exchange, clearing, brokerage, and other applicable charges. Not stated as one all-in figure; review the current fee schedule for your account and product.
Collateral and custody The futures model can provide exposure without owning the coin or storing it in a wallet. Confirm acceptable collateral and account protections. Confirm collateral types, custody arrangements, segregation, and withdrawal or transfer procedures for your jurisdiction.
Trading hours and maintenance CME publishes trading schedules, including maintenance windows, in its FAQ and product documentation. Check the current schedule, maintenance windows, and any interruption procedures for the specific product.
Customer eligibility Access depends on the intermediary, account type, jurisdiction, and product requirements. Availability is subject to current eligibility and jurisdiction; a product shown on the platform may not be available to every customer.

How to evaluate a venue before placing a trade

  1. Verify access first. Check the venue’s registration or regulatory status, the product’s authorization, your location, and the account category required.
  2. Read the contract specification. Record the underlying reference, contract size, expiration or perpetual design, settlement benchmark, trading hours, and maintenance windows.
  3. Map the margin path. Calculate the notional exposure created by your proposed collateral. Identify maintenance thresholds, liquidation triggers, collateral valuation, and what happens during a fast market.
  4. Price the trade beyond the headline fee. Compare the stated commission or fee with the bid-ask spread, market depth, funding or other alignment charges where applicable, and any clearing or brokerage costs.
  5. Check operational and legal protections. Review collateral custody, dispute procedures, outage handling, and customer agreements. The CFTC advises directing legal questions to an attorney.

Are crypto derivatives risky?

Yes. The principal risks are structural, not limited to an incorrect price forecast:

  • Leverage risk: a small move against a margined position can consume available collateral quickly.
  • Liquidation risk: breaching margin requirements can cause the venue to close the position under its procedures.
  • Contract risk: expiration, benchmark, settlement, and perpetual-alignment rules differ across products.
  • Venue risk: scams, outages, weak controls, or unclear dispute processes can affect access to funds or positions.
  • Regulatory and geographic risk: protections and eligibility depend on the exact product and customer location.

Regulation is useful information, but it is not a blanket safety rating. Confirm the status of the specific venue and contract, and do not infer that a regulated product has the same protections as a bank deposit or a spot asset held in your own wallet.

Which derivative type may fit your objective?

Choose dated futures when you need a defined contract period

Dated futures provide standardized long or short exposure with a stated expiration and settlement process. They may suit a hedge or directional view tied to a particular time window, provided you can meet margin requirements through settlement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose options when the contractual right matters

Options are built around a right to buy or sell under specified terms rather than the same obligation structure as futures. Their value depends on the stated price, date, underlying contract, and settlement rules, so read those terms before treating an option as a simple substitute for spot exposure.

Choose perpetual-style products only after understanding the alignment rules

Perpetuals remove the ordinary expiration date, but they replace it with venue-specific mechanisms intended to keep the contract near spot. Confirm how those mechanisms are calculated and charged before comparing a perpetual with a dated future.
