Samsung’s launch announcement advertised up to $900 in eligible instant trade-in credit, but that was a launch-period promotion. Current quotes depend on the phone purchased, the exact trade-in model and condition, and the promotion shown at checkout. Samsung’s launch information is available at Samsung Newsroom; current deal coverage has reported lower live maximums for some models, including up to $720 for an S26 Ultra trade-in offer (Android Central).
What “up to $900” actually means
The headline is a ceiling, not a guaranteed payment for every Galaxy. Separate the components before comparing offers:

- Trade-in value: the base amount assigned to your old device.
- Promotional credit: extra value available only under a particular sale, plan or activation.
- Instant credit: applied at checkout or against the purchase price, usually the clearest form of savings.
- Bill credits: monthly reductions applied to a carrier installment account.
- Store credit or an eCertificate: useful only if you would actually shop with that seller; it is not cash.
The maximum generally requires a particular Galaxy model, storage version, condition, destination phone and promotion. A launch maximum should not be treated as the current Samsung quote.
How the S26, S26+ and S26 Ultra prices change the math
Samsung announced U.S. launch starting prices of $899.99 for the Galaxy S26, $1,099.99 for the S26+ and $1,299.99 for the S26 Ultra. These are launch prices, not a promise of today’s checkout price (Samsung Newsroom).

Storage upgrades, sales tax, activation or connection charges and accessories can remain payable even when an advertisement calls the phone “free.”
Samsung unlocked trade-in
Why it is usually the cleanest upgrade
- The phone is sold for independent use rather than being tied to a bill-credit schedule.
- Your existing carrier and plan do not need to change solely to obtain the discount.
- The quoted instant credit is easier to compare with a private-sale price.
- It suits prepaid, MVNO and multi-carrier users.
What to check
Samsung’s quote is condition- and model-specific, and inspection can reduce or invalidate an estimate. Promotions may not stack with other Samsung, carrier or retailer promotions unless the terms expressly allow it (Samsung’s preorder terms). Re-enter the exact storage variant and condition in the live calculator immediately before ordering; do not infer an individual value from the $900 launch maximum.

Carrier offers: larger credits with larger obligations
T-Mobile
T-Mobile currently advertises an S26 “On Us” pathway with an eligible trade-in on an Experience More plan, an S26+ offer under specified upgrade conditions and up to $1,100 off any Galaxy S26 with qualifying new-line and plan conditions. Benefits are delivered through up to 36 monthly bill credits; taxes and a $35 device connection charge may apply, and paying off early can end future credits (T-Mobile’s Galaxy offers). Confirm whether the displayed offer is for an existing-line upgrade, a new line, a switcher or a specific trade-in.
AT&T
The current Best Buy-posted AT&T terms show up to $1,100 in bill credits on the S26 Ultra and S26+ with qualifying plans and trade-ins, up to $900 on certain legacy Starter combinations and up to $500 on AT&T Value 2.0. The offer uses a 36-month installment plan. Credits can take up to three bills to begin, the trade-in must be completed within 30 days, and canceling service or lowering the plan can stop or reduce credits. Tax is based on full retail price and a $35 activation or upgrade fee may apply. The trade-in device generally cannot remain on an existing installment plan (Best Buy/AT&T offer terms).
Verizon and Best Buy activation
Best Buy advertises up to $900 on the S26 series with an eligible old or damaged phone and qualifying Verizon activation or upgrade on selected MyPlan options. The amount depends on the chosen device, plan and activation route; the eligible list includes numerous Galaxy S, Z and FE models (Best Buy’s Verizon offer). Buying unlocked from Best Buy is a different transaction: the retailer may provide a straight discount or store reward, while Verizon handles neither the financing nor the trade-in unless you activate through Verizon.
Which Galaxy phones are strongest trade-ins?
Exact values change, so use these as prioritization rather than promises:

- Recent Galaxy S Ultra models are most likely to reach the top tier.
- Recent S+ models and Galaxy Z Fold or Z Flip devices can qualify for substantial credits, depending on the promotion.
- Galaxy S25-series phones generally deserve a direct quote before trading.
- Older S-series devices may qualify at lower tiers.
- Galaxy A-series phones may receive smaller credits or merely satisfy a minimum-value threshold.
- Damaged phones can be unusually valuable under a carrier’s named “any condition” offer, but that language does not apply to every model or plan.
Do not assume a cracked or nonworking phone qualifies simply because an advertisement says “any condition.” Check the named model list, storage requirement and plan tier.
Calculate the real cost, not the advertised credit
Use this worksheet for every seller:
Effective upgrade cost = phone price + taxes and fees + activation or upgrade charges + extra plan cost during the promotion − trade-in credit − promotional bill credits − gift cards or store credit you will actually use.
For a carrier comparison, calculate:
Net carrier advantage = carrier promotional credits − Samsung’s direct credit − additional plan cost caused by the promotion − expected switching or payoff cost.
Enter the current checkout price, the live trade-in quote, the monthly installment and credit period, the difference between the required plan and your current plan, and every stated fee. A “free” phone can still cost more if it requires a pricier plan for 36 months.

When selling privately or keeping the phone wins
Sell privately
Compare the guaranteed Samsung or carrier amount with completed sale prices on a reputable marketplace, subtracting fees, shipping and your time. A recent, excellent-condition Ultra can bring more privately than an instant trade-in, especially when you want an unlocked S26.
Keep it as a backup
Keeping a paid-off Galaxy avoids shipping and inspection risk and gives you a spare for travel, repairs or a second line. This can beat a small trade-in credit.
Choose a carrier promotion
It can be rational when the qualifying plan is already in your budget, you will remain for the full credit term and the incremental subsidy clearly exceeds Samsung’s unlocked quote.
Trade-in checklist
- Back up photos, messages, authenticator data and other files.
- Remove the physical SIM and transfer or remove the eSIM.
- Remove Samsung and Google accounts and disable device-protection features so Factory Reset Protection cannot block the recipient.
- Record the IMEI and serial number.
- Photograph the powered-on phone and every side, including damage.
- Factory-reset the device only after confirming the backup.
- Package it exactly as instructed and keep the shipping receipt and tracking number.
- Save the quote, promotion code, order number and photos until every credit posts.
Common problems and recovery
The value changes at checkout
Likely causes include a storage mismatch, wrong model, condition downgrade, carrier eligibility issue or expired promotion. Save the original quote, re-enter the exact details and compare the final terms before shipping.

Credits do not appear
Keep tracking evidence, confirm receipt and acceptance, then check the first three bills. Contact the seller or carrier with the order number and promotion code. Do not cancel or downgrade the line while a dispute is open; AT&T specifically allows up to three bills for credits to begin.
You want to leave early
Promotional credits generally stop and the remaining installment balance may become due. Calculate that exit cost before accepting the offer.
Bottom line
Galaxy-to-Galaxy is the right place to start, but “up to $900” is not a universal cash trade-in value. Samsung direct is usually best for an unlocked, flexible upgrade. T-Mobile, AT&T or Verizon can be worth more when you already want the qualifying plan and will keep it through the full credit period. If your Galaxy is recent and clean, price a private sale before surrendering it.
