When the presentation resumed, internal Microsoft Teams messages about Walmart appeared on screen, reportedly revealing the retailer’s interest in Microsoft’s Entra Web and AI Gateway products, along with candid comments about Walmart’s existing MyAssistant system.
The episode was an accidental disclosure of selected business discussions—not proof of a Teams hack, a complete Walmart strategy leak, or a finalized contract.
What happened at Microsoft Build
The incident occurred during a Tuesday, May 20, 2025 session co-presented by Neta Haiby, Microsoft’s head of AI security, and Sarah Bird, the company’s head of responsible AI. Former Microsoft employees Hossam Nasr and Vaniya Agrawal, associated with the activist group No Azure for Apartheid, interrupted the event. The group was protesting Microsoft’s contracts and technology relationships with the Israeli government.
Contemporaneous reports say the stream was muted or the camera redirected during the disruption. As the presentation changed or resumed, a Microsoft Teams window was apparently shared accidentally. Reports indicate that both people in the room and viewers of the broadcast may have seen some messages, although the available accounts do not establish that the entire conversation was displayed or exactly how long it remained visible. Gizmodo, Windows Central and The Outpost’s summary of CNBC reporting described the exposure.

What the visible messages reportedly said
The messages concerned Walmart’s apparent evaluation or planned adoption of two Microsoft offerings:
- Microsoft Entra Web: discussed in coverage as an identity, access and security control for AI agents or web-enabled AI activity.
- AI Gateway: described as a governance, security and analytics layer through which generative-AI applications can be controlled and monitored.
One message reportedly said, “Walmart is ready to ROCK AND ROLL with Entra Web and AI Gateway.” Another quoted a Walmart AI engineer saying Microsoft was “WAY ahead of Google with AI security.” That comparison is an internal opinion attributed to a specific engineer, not an independent benchmark or public Walmart endorsement.
The messages also referred to Walmart’s internal MyAssistant as “overly powerful” and in need of guardrails. Reports described MyAssistant as using Walmart proprietary data, technology and large language models through Azure OpenAI Service. Its cited uses included summarizing long documents and creating marketing content for store associates. The Times of India and The Outpost reported those details.

What was—and was not—revealed about Walmart
The disclosure offers a narrow glimpse into Walmart’s AI planning and governance concerns. It does not establish that Walmart had signed a final contract, moved the products into production, abandoned Google, or approved a company-wide rollout. “Ready to rock and roll” signals momentum, but it is not a legal announcement or deployment record.
There is no reported evidence that the screen showed Walmart customer records, source code, personal information or the contents of a complete corporate roadmap. Nor does the “overly powerful” description prove that MyAssistant caused a security incident. It indicates an internal concern about permissions and controls.
Microsoft Entra’s current product family covers identity and access management for users, applications and other principals; Microsoft’s official overview is at Microsoft Entra. Azure’s AI services and Azure OpenAI Service documentation are available at Azure AI and Azure OpenAI Service. Product names and packaging can change, so the leaked wording should not be treated as a current product catalog or promise of availability.

Why an internal assistant needs guardrails
An enterprise assistant that can search proprietary information, summarize documents and generate content can be useful while still carrying material risk. The key question is not simply whether a model is accurate; it is what the assistant is allowed to read, create and do.
- Least privilege: grant only the data and tools needed for a specific role.
- Separate permissions: reading, summarizing, drafting and executing actions should not automatically confer the same authority.
- Data boundaries: restrict which repositories, customers, regions and classifications an agent can reach.
- Human approval: require review before external publication, purchases, policy changes or other consequential actions.
- Logging and monitoring: retain records of prompts, tool calls, outputs and access decisions, with carefully limited log access.
- Prompt and tool restrictions: block unsafe instructions, unapproved connectors and attempts to bypass policy.
An AI Gateway may centralize some of these controls, but it can also add configuration work, latency, cost and a new control-plane dependency. Logs and prompts may themselves contain sensitive information, so governance must cover the gateway as well as the model.

No Azure for Apartheid has criticized Microsoft’s commercial relationships with Israel and alleged that Microsoft cloud services could support Israeli military or government activity. Protesters reportedly accused Microsoft of “whitewashing” crimes in Palestine and disrupted more than one company event. Those are activists’ allegations and should not be presented as independently established facts.

Contemporaneous reporting said Microsoft stated that internal and external reviews had found no evidence that its products had harmed people in Gaza, while acknowledging that it cannot fully see how software is used on private servers or systems outside its cloud. Techmeme’s event archive records the breadth of coverage, while Gizmodo reported the company’s position and protest context.

The episode is best understood as an operational confidentiality failure, not evidence that Microsoft Teams was breached. A presenter or operator appears to have exposed a window containing internal chat while managing a disrupted live event. High-pressure conditions make that mistake more likely, particularly when one person is handling presentation controls, cameras and streaming.
Microsoft’s Teams guidance explains the mechanics of sharing content at this support page. Organizations can reduce exposure by:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBest Value
- Sharing a single presentation window instead of the full desktop.
- Using a separate, clean presentation device or account with no customer chat, email or CRM open.
- Disabling notifications, message previews and pop-ups before going live.
- Having a second operator control the stream and verify every scene or source.
- Rehearsing protest, interruption and emergency handoff procedures.
- Classifying customer discussions, redacting screenshots and restricting who may display them.
- Reviewing recordings promptly and preserving an incident timeline if confidential material appears.
These controls address accidental disclosure. They do not replace access management, contractual confidentiality terms or a response plan for an intentional insider release.
What remains unknown
- Whether Walmart had finalized an Entra Web or AI Gateway agreement or merely evaluated the products.
- How many seconds the messages were visible and whether a complete recording survives unedited.
- Exactly which lines were legible to the room and the online audience.
- Whether Microsoft notified Walmart or conducted a formal contractual review.
- Whether either company changed its presentation, screen-sharing or customer-confidentiality procedures.
- Whether “AI Gateway” was the final product name or later became part of another Microsoft offering.
Available reports do not establish a legal claim, financial penalty or other contractual consequence arising from the incident, and neither company’s detailed public response has been verified in those accounts.
Bottom line
A protest at Microsoft Build was followed by an apparent screen-sharing mistake that exposed a limited set of internal Teams messages about Walmart’s AI-security plans and its MyAssistant guardrail concerns. The disclosure was commercially meaningful because it showed how a major retailer was thinking about identity and AI governance, but it was not a complete strategy leak, a Teams vulnerability or proof that Walmart’s AI systems were unsafe.
