The notices covered 157 positions at Cisco’s Milpitas campus and 64 at its San Francisco site, with eliminations scheduled for October 13, 2025.
This is a report about the 2025 filings—not a new August 2026 announcement. The notices describe planned position eliminations; they do not independently establish that every separation occurred exactly as scheduled.
How many Cisco positions were covered?
The precise total was 221. “More than 200” in the headline is the sum of the two reported California WARN notices.
| Location | Positions covered | Scheduled date |
|---|---|---|
| Milpitas | 157 | October 13, 2025 |
| San Francisco | 64 | October 13, 2025 |
| Total | 221 | October 13, 2025 |

Which Cisco facilities were affected?
The reported filings identify Cisco’s Milpitas campus and San Francisco site. They do not identify Cisco’s San Jose headquarters, so this specific event should not be described as a San Jose layoff without separate documentation.

What California WARN filings establish
WARN notices provide advance information about covered planned job eliminations at a worksite. In this case, they support the 221-position count, the two locations and the scheduled date reported by CRN.
A filing is not a complete account of final employment outcomes. The available report does not establish severance terms, transfers, contractor participation or whether every planned separation occurred on October 13. It also does not reproduce filing identifiers or provide a department-by-department list.

What is known about the affected roles
CRN reported that the positions ranged from junior roles to vice-presidential titles. The report did not provide a complete list of job titles, departments or business units. It therefore does not support attributing the cuts specifically to engineering, sales, finance, human resources or a particular Cisco product group.
How AI fits into the context
The cuts were reported amid Cisco’s broader discussion of artificial intelligence and workforce productivity. CEO Chuck Robbins had said Cisco wanted existing engineers to become more productive with AI rather than eliminating jobs because of AI. CRN also reported that Cisco had cited AI among the reasons for an earlier reduction of about 7% of its workforce.

- Dual Gigabit Ethernet Ports: Features 2 RJ45 10/100/1000 LAN/WAN ports for high-speed network connectivity and flexible deployment options
- Enhanced High-Speed WAN Interface Card Slots: Equipped with 2 EHWIC slots for modular expansion and customization of network services
- Security Feature Set: Includes SEC feature set with embedded hardware encryption acceleration and advanced security services for comprehensive network protection
- Doublewide EWIC Slot: Provides 1 doublewide EWIC slot that occupies both standard EHWIC slots when used, offering flexibility for high-density interface requirements
- USB Connectivity: Includes 1 USB port for external storage, configuration management, and additional connectivity options
Those statements do not prove that AI caused these 221 Bay Area position eliminations. Cisco did not respond to CRN’s request for comment on the local filings, and no company explanation tying the specific notices to AI was reported.
Cisco’s financial backdrop
CRN reported the following fiscal fourth-quarter 2025 results:
Rank #4
- Enjoy the benefits of Wireless-N in your home--ideal for wireless Internet usage and home office productivity
- Connect your computers, wireless printers, smartphones, and other wireless devices at up to 300 Mbps of transfer speed
- Use four Fast Ethernet (10/100 Mbps) ports to directly connect wired devices
- Revenue of $14.63 billion, up 8% year over year.
- Non-GAAP earnings per share of 94 cents, up 14% year over year.
- Non-GAAP net income of $2.8 billion, up 12% year over year.
Growing revenue and earnings can coexist with targeted reductions in particular locations or functions. These figures provide context, not Cisco’s stated reason for the Bay Area filings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How large was the reduction relative to Cisco?
CRN cited approximately 90,400 Cisco employees worldwide at the end of fiscal 2024. Comparing 221 planned Bay Area position eliminations with that earlier global headcount produces roughly 0.24%, although the dates differ and the comparison is only approximate.

Other timing and company context
The Bay Area report followed Cisco’s fiscal fourth-quarter and full-year 2025 earnings announcement. CRN also reported that channel chief Rodney Clark was leaving and that Tim Coogan would lead the Global Partner Sales organization. That leadership transition was reported concurrently, but the available information does not show that it caused or was caused by the Bay Area layoffs.
What remains unconfirmed
- The full list of affected departments and individual job titles.
- Whether contractors were included in the 221 positions.
- Whether all scheduled reductions occurred exactly as filed.
- Cisco’s official explanation for the two notices.
- Whether separate notices covered any San Jose facility.
The clearest supported description is therefore: two California WARN filings reported in August 2025 covered 221 planned Cisco position eliminations in Milpitas and San Francisco, scheduled for October 13, 2025.
