CoreWeave began with finance professionals mining Ethereum on consumer Nvidia GPUs. That experiment grew into a large GPU fleet, an open-source AI partnership and, eventually, a Nasdaq listing that raised $1.5 billion in gross proceeds. The origin story is real, but the IPO also exposed the cost of scaling AI infrastructure: heavy borrowing, large capital commitments and dependence on a small number of customers.
From a Manhattan pool table to CoreWeave
CoreWeave was founded by Michael Intrator, Brian Venturo and Brannin McBee. Intrator had founded Hudson Ridge Asset Management; Venturo was a Hudson Ridge portfolio manager; and McBee ran the data firm used by the hedge fund. Their background was finance, energy-market data and machine learning—not conventional cloud computing.
They started mining cryptocurrency to understand it as a commodity business: what equipment production required, how the economics worked and how a mining operation behaved at scale. The first setup reportedly occupied a pool table in their Manhattan office. The founders then moved GPUs into a closet, a grandfather’s garage in New Jersey and larger facilities as demand from friends and finance contacts encouraged them to buy more equipment.
According to the founders’ account, the operation eventually reached about 50,000 consumer Nvidia GPUs and was the world’s largest Ethereum miner for roughly two and a half years. Those figures are interview claims, not an independently audited historical industry ranking. The closet was one stage of the expansion, not the scale of the company that later went public. TechCrunch’s interview describes the progression.

What crypto mining taught the founders
Consumer graphics cards were not designed to run continuously in poorly ventilated warehouses. Keeping thousands of them productive required practical infrastructure work:
- detecting failing hardware and removing it from workloads;
- automating job placement and fleet monitoring;
- managing heat, power and environmental conditions;
- maximizing utilization of relatively inexpensive hardware; and
- operating outside the facilities and processes of a traditional hyperscale cloud.
That experience was useful when AI customers began seeking scarce GPU capacity. It was not, by itself, a complete AI cloud. Large-model training also requires high-speed interconnects, networking topology, storage, orchestration, scheduling and software optimization. The mining fleet gave CoreWeave operational experience and hardware knowledge; the company still had to build the systems needed for AI workloads.
EleutherAI turned spare capacity into an AI path
The pivot from Ethereum to AI developed through a mix of preparation, timing and luck. CoreWeave offered GPU access to EleutherAI, an open-source AI research group, while learning how model training worked. The relationship introduced the company to AI developers and startups and helped turn a mining operation into a potential commercial infrastructure provider.

Stability AI became an early customer after learning about CoreWeave through that open-source community. It was important validation, but it was not the sole cause of CoreWeave’s success. The company also needed newer hardware, financing, data-center capacity and customers willing to sign substantial commitments.
Capital and enterprise customers
The founders told TechCrunch that they pitched Magnetar investors over dinner and secured a reported $100 million investment. That amount should be understood as an attributed interview claim rather than a substitute for transaction documentation.
OpenAI reportedly learned about CoreWeave through its open-source work. Microsoft then learned about the company through its relationship with OpenAI and became its largest customer at that point. Large contracts helped CoreWeave justify buying more GPUs and financing additional facilities. OpenAI later signed a major direct agreement, changing the customer ranking. Neither Microsoft’s nor OpenAI’s historical position should be treated as a permanent statement about the customer mix.

What CoreWeave sells
CoreWeave sells access to GPU-enabled cloud infrastructure and related software services for training, inference, fine-tuning and other high-performance workloads. It is a specialized provider rather than a general-purpose cloud offering every enterprise service.
The specialization can be an advantage when a customer needs particular GPU configurations, dense clusters or dedicated capacity. It also creates exposure to GPU supply, electricity, cooling, networking, data-center construction and the rapid replacement cycle of AI hardware.

Why the debut was considered lukewarm
CoreWeave had reportedly hoped to raise more and command a higher valuation. It priced below its previously indicated range, reduced the share count, opened below the offer price and finished its first session at the offer price. TechCrunch reported an approximately $14 billion market capitalization at that close. That was an IPO-day valuation, not a current market-capitalization figure.

| Metric | IPO-era figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 revenue | $229 million | Reported in the S-1 |
| 2024 revenue | Approximately $1.9 billion | About 737% year-over-year growth |
| 2024 net loss | Approximately $863 million | Reported in the S-1 |
| Debt near the IPO | Approximately $7.6 billion | TechCrunch, citing the Financial Times; balances and maturities change |
| Reported March 2025 infrastructure | 32 data centers and about 250,000 GPUs | Company figures reported by TechCrunch, not current August 2026 statistics |
The revenue increase was extraordinary, but revenue is not profit or free cash flow. CoreWeave had to spend heavily on GPUs, facilities, power and networking before all contracted capacity could produce recognized revenue.
Management’s explanation was that customer contracts, including take-or-pay commitments, supported the GPU purchases financed with debt. The company’s filings describe infrastructure financed primarily through asset-level debt supported by such contracts, supplemented by corporate equity and debt. A contract can reduce utilization risk, but it does not eliminate counterparty risk, delays, renegotiation risk, credit risk or the obligation to service debt.

What investors should examine
Advantages
- Specialization: a focused GPU platform can respond to AI workloads faster than a broad cloud designed for many use cases.
- Operational head start: mining created experience with monitoring, automation and failure management for large GPU fleets.
- Open-source credibility: EleutherAI helped connect CoreWeave with AI builders.
- Committed demand: large customer contracts can support financing and capacity planning.
Risks
- Capital intensity: GPUs and data centers require large upfront investments.
- Debt exposure: leverage magnifies returns when demand is strong and losses when growth, pricing or utilization weaken.
- Customer concentration: a few very large customers can represent a substantial share of revenue.
- Technology cycles: new GPU generations can make older equipment less attractive before it is fully depreciated.
- Physical bottlenecks: power, cooling, sites and networking can constrain growth even when chips are available.
- Competition: AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, Oracle, other GPU clouds and customers’ own data centers compete for the same workloads.
For public-markets analysis, readers should use CoreWeave’s current filings at the company’s SEC-filings index and investor-relations site, rather than extrapolating 2025 figures into 2026.
What the origin story really proves
Crypto mining did not automatically create an AI cloud. It supplied a hardware base, operating discipline and an understanding of how to keep unreliable GPU fleets productive. EleutherAI supplied an education and a network of AI developers. Capital, scarce generative-AI capacity, enterprise contracts and aggressive borrowing transformed those ingredients into a public company.
That combination explains both sides of the IPO: CoreWeave had unusually rapid growth and strategically important customers, yet investors also had to price debt, losses, concentration and hardware-cycle risk. The closet is a compelling beginning, not a complete explanation of a $1.5 billion offering.
