Bottom line: SAP’s Sapphire 2025 announcement did not launch a single SAP–Palantir product or make Palantir part of SAP. It outlined a strategy in which SAP supplies business-process data and context, while Palantir contributes an operational ontology, analytics, workflow and AI-application layer. The idea is strategically credible, but its value depends on data quality, integration depth, governance, commercial scope and measurable outcomes.
What SAP actually announced at Sapphire 2025
At its May 20, 2025 Sapphire event in Orlando, SAP presented Business AI as a connected strategy rather than a standalone chatbot. The announcement brought together:
- an expanded Joule assistant across SAP work and applications;
- Joule Agents for multi-step reasoning, orchestration and workflow execution;
- SAP Business Data Cloud as a governed data foundation;
- SAP Knowledge Graph to represent relationships among business objects and metadata;
- SAP AI Foundation on SAP Business Technology Platform; and
- partnerships involving Palantir, Perplexity, Cohere, Mistral AI, Not Diamond, WalkMe, Google Cloud, NVIDIA and others.
SAP said Business AI could produce productivity gains of up to 30%. That is a SAP-reported maximum, not an independently verified average. SAP also said it had delivered more than 230 AI scenarios and expected more than 400 by the end of 2025; the latter was a projection, not a confirmed final count. In a June 2025 follow-up, SAP said 34,000 customers were using SAP Business AI, using SAP’s own definition of “using.” (SAP announcement)
The Palantir announcement concerned joint customer cloud-migration and modernization programs. SAP said connectivity between Palantir and SAP Business Data Cloud would help create a harmonized enterprise data foundation. That wording describes an intended integration and customer motion, not proof of universal production availability, a merged product, quantified customer results or one standard SAP subscription.

What SAP means by an “AI flywheel”
“Flywheel” is an analytical description of SAP’s strategy, not the name of a product that customers buy. The loop can be represented as:
SAP applications → governed business data → Knowledge Graph and semantic context → Joule and Joule Agents → controlled workflow actions → more structured operational signals → more useful AI.
SAP’s premise is that finance, supply-chain, procurement, HR, customer and other application data become more valuable when governed and connected. Better context should improve agent recommendations and actions; greater workflow use should create additional structured signals; and visible value should encourage customers to consolidate more processes and data on SAP.
The flywheel works only if the underlying records, definitions, permissions and APIs are dependable. It is therefore an architecture and operating model, not a shortcut around master-data remediation or process redesign.

Where Palantir fits
The partnership is best understood as complementary. SAP remains the system of business applications and associated process context. Palantir Foundry and AIP provide an environment for operationalizing data, modeling entities and relationships, building AI applications and deploying workflows across heterogeneous systems. Palantir describes the relationship as combining SAP applications, data and embedded AI with its Ontology and AIP capabilities. (Palantir + SAP)
| Functional layer | SAP contribution | Palantir contribution |
|---|---|---|
| Business systems | ERP, finance, supply chain, HR, procurement, customer and other applications | Consumes and operationalizes data from SAP and other systems |
| Data foundation | Business Data Cloud, Datasphere, data products, semantic alignment and governance | Integration across heterogeneous data and an operational ontology |
| Business context | Knowledge Graph and application metadata | Ontology representing entities, relationships, actions and permissions |
| AI interaction | Joule and Joule Agents embedded in SAP workflows | AIP for building and deploying AI applications and operational workflows |
| Transformation | RISE with SAP and SAP Cloud ERP modernization | Migration, integration, analytics and operational deployment support |
| Governance | SAP identity, roles, application controls and data policies | Ontology-level permissions, auditability and deployment controls |
This is a functional comparison, not evidence that the platforms have identical or fully merged capabilities.
Why the partnership matters
Many enterprises have valuable ERP data but still struggle to turn it into decisions and actions. Information is spread across SAP applications, data warehouses, lakes, custom code, manufacturing systems, logistics platforms and frontline tools.
SAP’s advantage is its position inside authoritative business processes. Palantir’s proposition is to model data and make it operational across multiple environments. Together, the intended chain is shorter:
- extract or expose data;
- align its meaning across systems;
- represent entities, relationships and permissions;
- reason over current operational context;
- present a recommendation to a person or agent; and
- execute an approved action in a business workflow.
That is more consequential than adding another language model to an ERP interface. It also creates more integration, security, organizational and commercial complexity.
What each SAP component contributes
SAP Business Data Cloud
Business Data Cloud coordinates capabilities around SAP Datasphere, SAP Analytics Cloud, SAP BW/4HANA Private Cloud Edition, SAP Databricks and related data products. SAP’s entitlement documentation says core capacity is required and identifies optional products such as Cloud ERP Intelligence and People Intelligence. (SAP Business Data Cloud entitlements)
Its role in the flywheel is to provide governed, context-rich data for analytics, applications and AI. SAP’s 2025 Innovation Guide described integration with Palantir Foundry and AIP as a way to address data silos and create a trusted data foundation. (SAP Innovation Guide: Data Cloud)
Joule and Joule Agents
Joule is SAP’s AI copilot for conversational access to SAP and non-SAP business processes. SAP documentation says it can present consolidated information, guide users through tasks, reference enterprise documents and interoperate with other generative assistants. The service runs in SAP BTP Cloud Foundry, and SAP describes tenant data as isolated in its multitenant architecture. (SAP Joule service guide)

Joule Agents are the action and orchestration layer. SAP positions them to coordinate multi-step workflows, reason across business context and involve humans. Examples cited by SAP include environmental health and safety and finance accruals. (SAP Business AI and partnerships)
SAP Knowledge Graph
The Knowledge Graph is intended to expose relationships among business objects and metadata. An agent can then understand, for example, how a service ticket relates to a product and a purchase order. This is different from retrieving passages from documents: enterprise AI also needs entities, hierarchies, dependencies and permissions.
What the flywheel requires to work
- Clean, governed master data and stable definitions for customers, products, suppliers, locations, assets and transactions.
- A semantic layer that relates SAP and non-SAP systems.
- Reliable propagation of identity and authorization.
- AI grounded in current operational data rather than disconnected document retrieval.
- Workflow APIs that support controlled action, not only text generation.
- Human approval for consequential decisions.
- Monitoring, audit trails and rollback mechanisms.
- Business measures such as close-cycle time, forecast accuracy, downtime, migration speed or working-capital performance.
SAP says Joule and Joule Agents can work across SAP and third-party systems, while the Knowledge Graph supplies business context. Palantir similarly presents its Ontology and AIP as mechanisms connecting data, decisions and actions. Those are capabilities to validate in a specific design, not guarantees that every deployment has them.
Announced, planned and generally available are different
Conference announcements routinely combine product direction with release plans. SAP said initial Knowledge Graph support for SAP Cloud ERP and SAP Business Data Cloud was expected to become generally available in the third quarter of 2025. Joule Studio’s skill-builder capability was planned for the third quarter, and its agent-builder capability for the fourth quarter. Availability still depends on product edition, tenant type, region, release and applicable service documentation. (SAP’s June 2025 update)

What changed by Sapphire 2026
In its May 12, 2026 Sapphire announcement, SAP described a broader “Autonomous Enterprise” strategy and said its Palantir partnership had deepened to include AI-supported data-migration tooling for customers moving toward SAP Cloud ERP. (SAP Sapphire 2026 announcement)
That is evidence of follow-through and productization after the 2025 announcement. It is not evidence that the entire flywheel is complete, that every SAP customer receives Palantir functionality, or that migration is automatic and risk-free. Migration still requires mapping, transformation, testing, decisions about historical data, customization analysis, process redesign and change management.

Palantir’s partnership page also says the collaboration will initially focus on aligning product and organizational capabilities for national-security missions. That qualification matters: SAP’s enterprise-commercial framing should not be read as proof that identical features, contracts or deployment models are available to ordinary commercial customers. Questions to put to both vendors
Data and architecture
- Which system is authoritative for each customer, product, supplier, asset and transaction?
- Does Business Data Cloud expose the required data without excessive duplication?
- What does the Palantir Ontology add beyond the existing semantic layer?
- Are common identifiers, real-time synchronization, bidirectional write-back, events, lineage and field-level authorization supported?
AI and workflow
- Is the use case retrieval, prediction, optimization or action execution?
- Where does the agent execute, and which actions require approval?
- Can a Joule agent invoke Palantir actions and receive structured results?
- Can Palantir workflows write safely back into SAP?
- How are model and prompt changes tested before production?
Security and accountability
- Can SAP and Palantir permissions be reconciled without privilege escalation?
- Where are prompts, embeddings, outputs and models processed?
- Are every recommendation and automated transaction logged?
- Who owns the ontology and the rollback process?
Commercial and organizational fit
- Is the company committed to SAP Cloud ERP, RISE with SAP or Business Data Cloud?
- Does it already have Palantir Foundry or AIP skills and contracts?
- Will two platforms reduce bottlenecks or add another strategic dependency?
- Are capabilities standard, optional, consumption-priced or services-led?
- Who supports the integration if the partnership or either roadmap changes?
Principal failure modes
The data-foundation bottleneck
Inconsistent master data, conflicting divisional definitions and undocumented custom SAP logic can stall the loop. AI does not remove governance work; it can make poor governance more visible and more expensive.
Integration is not interoperability
A connector or zero-copy pattern may expose records without creating shared business definitions. Demand evidence of identifiers, synchronization, write-back, event handling, authorization, lineage and production-support ownership.
“Agent” can mean several things
A vendor demo may show a conversational assistant, document retrieval, a rules-based workflow with an LLM interface, multi-agent orchestration or an autonomous system that changes records. Require the vendor to specify which category is being demonstrated.
Platform dependence
SAP’s tight process integration and Palantir’s cross-system flexibility may be valuable together, but the combination can deepen dependence on two large vendors rather than reduce it.
Commercial reality
SAP Business Data Cloud
This is most relevant to existing SAP customers seeking a governed SAP-centered foundation. SAP uses capacity- and consumption-oriented structures; core capacity is required, with optional entitlements. Current product information is available at SAP Business Data Cloud. Promotional Databricks rates cited in an April 2026 document ran only through April 30, 2026 and should not be treated as current prices.

Verdict
SAP’s Sapphire 2025 flywheel is a serious enterprise-architecture thesis: application context and governed data feed agents, while agent-enabled workflows generate more operational value. Palantir adds a credible ontology and operational-application layer for organizations whose important work crosses SAP and non-SAP systems.
