The rumor was real, but the laptop is no longer upcoming. Apple launched it as MacBook Neo on March 11, 2026. The reported green finish did not make Apple’s official launch lineup: the available colors are blush, indigo, silver and citrus. Apple announced a U.S. launch price of $599, while its U.S. Mac shopping page showed MacBook Neo from $699 when checked on August 18, 2026.
What the original color rumor actually said
A February 16, 2026 report said Apple had tested several finishes for a lower-cost MacBook: light yellow, light green, blue, pink, silver and dark gray. The report, which relayed information from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, also cautioned that Apple was unlikely to ship every tested option. In other words, these were development choices, not a confirmed retail palette. MacRumors’ report documents that distinction.
Earlier reporting had pointed to a narrower silver, blue, pink and yellow selection, so the expanded list was notable but still speculative. Earlier MacRumors coverage attributed that expectation to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
Which colors shipped?
Apple’s launch announcement names four MacBook Neo finishes:
#1 Best Overall
- AN AMAZING MAC AT A SURPRISING PRICE — With an incredibly portable and durable aluminum design, up to 16 hours of battery life,* and the A18 Pro chip, MacBook Neo is ready to go wherever school takes you.
- FOUR STUNNING COLORS. ONE DURABLE DESIGN — Choose from four beautiful colors — Silver, Blush, Citrus, or Indigo — each with a color-coordinated keyboard. And MacBook Neo is made with a durable recycled aluminum enclosure that helps it reach 60 percent recycled content by weight — the most ever in any Apple product.*
- FLY THROUGH EVERYDAY ASSIGNMENTS — Whether you’re cramming for finals, using Apple Intelligence* to summarize class notes, creating presentations, or even playing the latest Apple Arcade game,* MacBook Neo delivers the performance and AI capabilities you need to get things done.
- UP TO 16 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — MacBook Neo delivers all day battery life, so you can power through from early morning classes to late night study sessions without worrying about plugging in.
- A VIBRANT 13-INCH DISPLAY* — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display on MacBook Neo supports 1 billion colors, so photos and videos pop and text is crisp for easy reading.
- Blush (the pink family)
- Indigo (the blue family)
- Silver
- Citrus (the yellow family)
Apple did not announce a green or dark-gray MacBook Neo. Calling citrus “yellow” or indigo “blue” is reasonable shorthand, but Apple’s names are the precise labels to use when checking inventory. See Apple’s MacBook Neo announcement and availability notice.
MacBook Neo specifications
MacBook Neo is a macOS laptop built around an iPhone-derived A-series processor rather than an M-series Mac chip. Apple identifies the cited base configuration as follows:

| Specification | MacBook Neo |
|---|---|
| Chip | Apple A18 Pro |
| Processor graphics | Six-core CPU and five-core GPU |
| Memory | 8GB unified memory (cited base configuration) |
| Storage | 256GB SSD (cited configuration) |
| Display | 13-inch Liquid Retina |
| Camera | 1080p FaceTime HD |
| Ports | Two USB-C ports; Apple identifies the left as USB 3 and the right as USB 2 |
| Cooling | Fanless |
| Battery claim | Up to 16 hours, varying with use and configuration |
| Enclosure | Aluminum |
Two USB-C sockets are not automatically equivalent: Apple’s footnote distinguishes their USB speeds. Do not assume Thunderbolt support unless the technical specifications for the exact configuration say so. Apple’s performance comparisons are manufacturer tests on preproduction systems, not independent benchmarks.
Price and availability: launch price versus today’s listing
Apple’s March 11 availability announcement set the U.S. launch price at $599. Apple’s U.S. shopping page displayed MacBook Neo from $699 on August 18, 2026. Those figures describe different dates, and neither should be applied automatically to another country. Configuration, tax, promotions, education eligibility and inventory can change the amount you pay. Check the current MacBook Neo store page for your location before budgeting.

The earlier rumor’s expected range of roughly $599–$699 was therefore directionally close, but a launch-price article should not be mistaken for a permanent retail price.
What makes the low price possible?
The A18 Pro platform lets Apple offer a Mac below the price of its conventional M-series notebooks, while the fanless design and modest base memory and storage keep the hardware simple. That does not make Neo an M-series equivalent. An A18 Pro Mac can run macOS and everyday applications, but sustained professional workloads, graphics-heavy work and large development projects may benefit substantially from the greater headroom available in a MacBook Air.

Reporting positioned the product toward students, families, basic enterprise deployments and Chromebook competition. That is market reporting rather than a formal Apple segmentation statement. For buyers, the practical question is whether the base 8GB of memory and 256GB drive cover the entire ownership period.
MacBook Neo or MacBook Air?
| Choose MacBook Neo when… | Choose MacBook Air when… |
|---|---|
| Lowest new-Mac cost is the priority. | You need more sustained performance headroom. |
| Your work is mainly browsing, documents, email, video calls, streaming and school software. | You regularly edit video, build software, use large creative projects or run demanding multitasking sessions. |
| You value silent, fanless operation and colorful finishes. | You need more memory, storage or a longer performance margin. |
| Two USB-C ports meet your needs, possibly with a hub. | Your workflow requires greater port or external-display flexibility. |
Apple’s Mac shopping page listed MacBook Air from $1,299 when checked August 18, 2026, compared with the $699-from signal shown for Neo. A sale, education price or refurbished Air can narrow that difference, so compare the actual checkout totals rather than relying on launch prices.

Ways to reduce the total cost
Check trade-in value
Apple Trade In can provide an estimated credit for an eligible device, but the amount depends on model, condition, eligibility and region. Get a quote at Apple Trade In and treat it as an estimate, not a guaranteed discount.
Compare certified refurbished Macs
Apple Certified Refurbished Mac inventory changes frequently. A refurbished MacBook Air may provide more memory, storage or performance for a similar outlay, but the exact configuration and availability cannot be assumed.
Consider protection and financing separately
AppleCare+ for Mac adds cost, so compare its price with the laptop’s replacement value and your intended ownership period. Eligible U.S. Apple Card customers may see 0% APR monthly installments and 3% Daily Cash under the terms at Apple’s Apple Card installment page; financing is not a universal discount or a substitute for choosing the right configuration.
Questions to answer before checkout
- Will 256GB remain sufficient for the planned ownership period?
- Will 8GB handle the user’s applications and multitasking?
- How many external displays and peripherals are required?
- Is a hub acceptable with the two-port layout?
- Is a discounted or refurbished MacBook Air better value at the actual price available today?
- Is the desired color offered in your country and configuration?
- Are you comparing a current price, a launch price or an education promotion?
The Bottom Line
The colorful low-cost MacBook rumor was substantially right about Apple testing bright finishes, but it was wrong to imply that green was guaranteed. Apple released the product as MacBook Neo in blush, indigo, silver and citrus. At the current listed price, it is compelling for everyday users who want the cheapest new Mac; buyers with demanding workloads or long-term memory and storage needs should price a MacBook Air or refurbished alternative before committing.
