TeslaTakeover was a decentralized protest campaign launched in February 2025 outside Tesla dealerships. Most reported demonstrations were small, but organizers and media reports described a network spanning at least dozens of U.S. events and, by one organizer’s estimate, at least 100 cities. The campaign targeted Elon Musk’s political role, including his work with the Trump administration and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), and urged pressure on Tesla through protests, vehicle sales and stock divestment.
What were the TeslaTakeover protests?
TeslaTakeover was not a single centrally managed march or formally incorporated organization. Disinformation researcher and Boston University journalism professor Joan Donovan began promoting dealership demonstrations on Bluesky after seeing small protests in Maine. Filmmaker Alex Winter amplified the idea and encouraged people to create local events of their own.
The basic format was straightforward: protesters gathered outside Tesla locations, held signs or picketed, and used the company as a point of leverage against Musk. Donovan described public attention and criticism as ways citizens could challenge what she characterized as Musk’s conduct and lack of transparency.
Winter’s February 10, 2025 message summarized the campaign’s economic tactics: “Sell your Teslas, dump your stock, join the picket lines.” He argued that harming Tesla could weaken Musk and, in turn, reduce his political influence.

Why were people protesting at Tesla dealerships?
Opposition to Musk’s government role
The central grievance was Musk’s involvement in the Trump administration and DOGE. Protesters treated Tesla dealerships as visible locations where consumers, investors and local communities could express opposition to that role.
Consumer and investor pressure
Organizers promoted several forms of pressure rather than a single demand:

- Local demonstrations outside Tesla dealerships.
- Consumer boycotts or selling an existing Tesla.
- Selling Tesla shares or declining to buy the stock.
- Publicly separating Tesla ownership from support for Musk; Axios reported that some owners used “Anti Elon Tesla Club” bumper stickers for that purpose.
Winter said that “detaching Musk from Tesla” would be a meaningful blow against the administration and its priorities. That is a campaign argument, not evidence that the protests caused a measurable change in Tesla sales, valuation or Musk’s influence.
How many TeslaTakeover protests were there?

| Figure | What it measures | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 42 events | U.S. protest events listed or planned | TechCrunch reported this figure on February 14, 2025; it was not an independently verified attendance count. |
| At least 100 cities | Geographic reach | Axios attributed this estimate to Alex Winter; it does not establish how many people attended each event. |
| Hundreds of RSVPs | People indicating interest in listed events | Reported by TechCrunch; RSVPs are not the same as attendance. |
Reported locations included Austin, Portland, Seattle, Kansas City, Mesa, New York and communities in California, Florida and Texas. The pattern is consistent: many local actions, generally modest in size, connected by shared messaging rather than a central membership roll.
Were TeslaTakeover and TeslaTakedown different movements?
The reporting from February 2025 shows overlapping terminology, not two clearly separate organizations. “TeslaTakeover” described the protest effort in early promotional posts, while Axios reported that the movement was also called #TeslaTakedown. The names were used for substantially similar tactics and goals.

| Comparison point | TeslaTakeover / TeslaTakedown in reported coverage |
|---|---|
| Name and hashtag | Both names appeared in coverage; #TeslaTakedown was used as an alternate label. |
| Organizing channels | Bluesky promotion, social-media amplification and locally created events. |
| Stated tactics | Dealership protests, consumer pressure and selling Tesla stock. |
| Geographic reach | Dozens of reported U.S. events, with an organizer estimate of activity in at least 100 cities. |
| How counts should be read | Event and city figures were reports or organizer estimates, not audited totals. |
It is therefore more accurate to treat the terms as overlapping labels for a decentralized campaign than to describe them as two independent nationwide organizations.

TechCrunch, citing an April 2024 regulatory filing, reported that nearly 60% of Musk’s Tesla shares were being used as loan collateral at that time. The detail helps explain why organizers discussed Tesla’s stock and corporate value as potential pressure points. It does not show that the protests changed the share price, forced sales of collateral or achieved a financial objective.

Did the protests work?
The available reporting does not establish a causal effect on Tesla sales, Tesla’s share price or Musk’s government role. It also does not provide a reliable aggregate attendance figure or verify the campaign’s status after February 2025.
What can be said with confidence is narrower: the campaign turned dealership locations into recurring sites of political protest, generated at least 42 listed U.S. events by February 14, and was described by its principal amplifier as reaching at least 100 cities. Those measures describe reach, not success.
Quick Recap
What to keep in mind when interpreting coverage
- Do not equate RSVPs with attendance. An online sign-up records intent, not turnout.
- Separate events from cities. Several events may occur in one city, while a city estimate may include activity that was not independently documented.
- Distinguish organizer claims from verified counts. The 100-city figure came from Winter; the 42-event figure was reported by TechCrunch from event listings.
- Avoid assuming all Tesla owners took a side. Some owners publicly distanced themselves from Musk, while the sources do not measure the views of Tesla owners as a whole.
- Do not infer financial impact without data. The reports do not prove that protests caused changes in Tesla demand, revenue or market value.
