Apple did not ask the court to dismiss or stop the entire Google search antitrust case. In an emergency motion filed on February 3, 2025, Apple asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit to pause the remedies proceedings while it appealed a district-court decision denying Apple’s request to intervene. Apple said the proposed remedies could affect its Google search agreement and that it deserved a chance to present evidence before restrictions were finalized.
Why Apple was involved in Google’s antitrust case
The United States and state attorneys general sued Google under Section 2 of the Sherman Act. In August 2024, the district court found that Google unlawfully maintained monopolies in general search services and general search text advertising. The case then moved from liability to remedies: the court had to decide what changes would address the unlawful conduct.
Apple was not an original defendant and was not found liable for monopolization. It became important because Google paid for prominent default placement on devices and browsers, including Apple’s Safari browser. The district court’s findings treated browser distribution agreements as part of the conduct at issue. The court’s opinion describes Google’s search-distribution arrangements.
What Apple asked the court to do
Apple’s February 3 emergency motion sought a stay—meaning a temporary pause—of the remedies proceedings while its appeal was considered. Alternatively, Apple asked for expedited appellate treatment or other relief that would let it participate before a remedy affecting its agreement was finalized. The filing followed the district court’s January 27 denial of Apple’s motion for limited intervention. The D.C. Circuit docket identifies the request as a motion for a stay of proceedings or, alternatively, an expedited appeal: D.C. Circuit docket 25-5016.

Apple wanted an opportunity to submit evidence about:
- how its Google agreement operates;
- how users select search engines on Apple devices and in Safari;
- the commercial and technical effects of restricting default-search payments; and
- whether the government’s proposed restrictions would improve competition without causing disproportionate harm.
A stay would have paused the remedies process; it would not have erased Google’s liability finding or ended the underlying lawsuit. An appeal also does not automatically suspend a lower-court proceeding.
Why the Google–Apple agreement mattered
Google’s payments for default placement were a central target of the government’s proposed remedies. Contemporary reporting said Apple received more than $20 billion a year from Google, although the exact contractual amount is confidential and the figure should be understood as an attributed estimate, not an Apple-disclosed number. AP reporting discusses Apple’s financial interest and later remedies.

Apple’s concern was therefore practical as well as procedural. A restriction on payments or distribution agreements could reduce a major revenue stream, require changes to Safari’s default settings, and affect Apple’s control over the user experience. Apple argued that it had information and interests that the government and Google might not fully present.

Apple’s position was narrower: preserve or influence the treatment of its own search-distribution arrangement and obtain a formal voice before the court imposed rules that could reshape it.
What the Justice Department argued
The government opposed both the intervention effort and the requested pause. Its filings argued that Apple’s request came late, after Apple had known about the litigation and possible remedies, and that Google could adequately represent any overlapping interest in preserving the agreement. The government also warned that allowing the motion could delay relief after a finding that Google had unlawfully maintained a monopoly.

Why default search placement matters
A user can usually change a search engine manually, but antitrust analysis does not treat every available option as equally effective. A preselected default is presented at the moment of search and benefits from user inertia, convenience, and repeated exposure. That can give a search engine a large distribution advantage even when alternatives remain technically accessible.
The government’s proposed remedies therefore reached beyond the question of whether Google could continue operating. They addressed how Google secured default placement, how search data might be shared, how search results could be syndicated, and—at some stages—Google’s ownership or control of products such as Chrome. A potential ban or limitation on multibillion-dollar default-search payments to Apple and other distributors was only one part of a broader remedies debate. AP coverage summarizes the proposed restrictions.

What happened to Apple’s request
The intervention and stay requests did not produce the broad participation Apple sought. The D.C. Circuit’s March 21, 2025 opinion addressed Apple’s intervention effort and upheld the treatment of the request as untimely. The opinion records that Apple moved to intervene on December 23, 2024: D.C. Circuit opinion.
The appellate docket also records a March 12, 2025 order denying Apple’s request to schedule oral argument. That procedural history does not mean Apple “stopped” the case. It means Apple sought a pause while challenging its exclusion from fuller participation, and the remedies process continued.

What the filing meant for the Google–Apple deal
Apple’s unsuccessful intervention effort did not automatically terminate its search agreement with Google. Later remedies reporting said the court declined some of the government’s most aggressive structural proposals and did not immediately eliminate every default-search arrangement. The commercial relationship therefore remained significant while appeals and implementation issues continued.
Any eventual change to default placement could still affect Apple’s search-related revenue, Google’s distribution strategy, and the prominence of alternative search engines. It would not necessarily force users to abandon Google: Google could remain available as a selectable search engine even if it lost automatic default status.
What consumers should take from the dispute
- More choice is possible, not guaranteed. Changes to defaults could expose users to alternatives, but distribution alone does not ensure better quality or adoption.
- Google could remain usable. Losing a default position would not by itself remove Google from Safari or Apple devices.
- Apple’s economics could change. A restriction on payments could reduce a substantial, publicly reported revenue stream.
- The headline was shorthand. Apple sought to pause the remedies phase, not dismiss the liability case.
Bottom line
Apple’s 2025 filing was a defensive effort to protect its platform economics and secure a procedural voice in remedies that could affect Safari’s default-search arrangement. The D.C. Circuit did not give Apple the broader intervention it wanted, the remedies process went forward, and the case had reached final judgment and implementation proceedings by 2026. The filing was about who could participate in shaping the remedy—not about whether Google’s search case should disappear.
