Naver Pay launched Naver Pay Wallet as a beta product in South Korea on August 30, 2024, with Chiliz Chain as its first blockchain partner. The launch was narrower than the phrase “Naver launches a crypto wallet” suggests: its initial job was to connect Naver users with sports and entertainment Web3 content, events and NFT-style “Art” collectibles. Naver described the wallet as non-custodial, but said fuller token-storage functionality would come with a later formal launch whose date was not specified.
What Naver actually launched
Naver Pay, Naver’s payments service, introduced Naver Pay Wallet in beta on August 30, 2024. The product was aimed at the South Korean market and was offered through the Naver Pay app.
Naver’s Korean announcement gave this launch-era path: open the Naver Pay app, choose All Menu, find the top widget area and select NPay Wallet. Users linked a Naver ID and created a separate wallet password. That path describes the 2024 app version; it should not be treated as a current navigation guarantee.
The beta emphasized blockchain-linked content rather than exchange-style crypto trading. Users could participate in sports and entertainment events, join related communities and collect digital items branded “Art.” Naver said token-wallet functionality would be provided with the formal opening, but did not give a formal-launch date. Naver’s launch announcement does not establish supported tokens, withdrawals, exchange connectivity, or availability outside South Korea.

Why the Chiliz partnership mattered
Naver Pay and Chiliz announced their strategic partnership on May 22, 2024, several months before the wallet beta. Their stated aim was to combine Naver Pay’s fintech distribution with Chiliz Chain’s sports and entertainment ecosystem, including possible fan tokens, exclusive ticketing and fan events for Korean sports fans. When the wallet launched, Chiliz was identified as its first major blockchain partner. Chiliz therefore supplied more than underlying blockchain infrastructure: it provided the initial route into fan communities, sports collectibles, events and loyalty-oriented Web3 applications. The partnership was not announced as an acquisition, joint venture or equity investment. Contemporary reporting specifically said Naver did not make a direct investment in Chiliz. TechCrunch reported the investment distinction.
Non-custodial does not mean risk-free
Naver described the wallet as non-custodial. In a conventional custodial exchange account, the platform holds the keys and records the customer’s balance. In a non-custodial wallet, the user is intended to control the credentials that authorize transactions and therefore bears more responsibility for security.

Naver described a Naver login plus a separate wallet password and highlighted a recovery experience different from many self-custody wallets. That does not justify saying Naver can automatically recover every private key, nor does it remove the need to protect credentials, verify transactions and avoid scams. The precise security architecture was not fully documented in the launch material.

What the label does—and does not—tell you
- It does not make the wallet an exchange or guarantee that assets can be bought and sold.
- It does not show that every Naver user had activated a wallet.
- It does not prove that every Chiliz ecosystem asset, including CHZ or individual fan tokens, was supported.
- It does not eliminate blockchain fees, transaction mistakes, phishing or market risk.
What users could do in the beta
Naver’s announcement supports these launch-era functions:
- Create a Naver Pay Wallet account in the Naver Pay app.
- Link a Naver ID and set a wallet-specific password.
- Collect and store “Art” digital collectibles.
- Participate in sports and entertainment events and related communities.
- Take part in Chiliz-linked launch activities.
The launch promotion ran from August 30 through September 29, 2024. Naver advertised a lottery for 24 two-person European Premier League VIP football travel packages and said additional events would select a total of 50 winners by the end of 2024. Non-winners could receive a Naver Pay points lottery opportunity worth up to 50,000 won. Those were dated launch promotions, not permanent wallet benefits.

Planned features were not confirmed launch features
Chiliz CEO Alexandre Dreyfus told TechCrunch that the project was expected to expand into decentralized-application integration, fan tokens, merchant loyalty programs and additional blockchains. Those statements describe a reported roadmap, not a verified feature list.
Naver’s own wording was more cautious: fuller token-storage functionality would arrive with a formal launch, whose timing was undecided. The available launch sources therefore cannot establish whether the wallet became a general-purpose multi-chain wallet, whether it added exchange functions or whether those roadmap items shipped.

The intended audience was existing Naver Pay users, Korean sports and entertainment fans, NFT-curious users and people who might find a mainstream app less intimidating than a standalone crypto wallet. Chiliz executives also described tech-savvy South Koreans interested in sports, entertainment and digital assets as the target audience.

TechCrunch cited more than 33 million Naver users and more than 97,000 online and offline Naver Pay merchants at the time of launch. These are launch-era potential reach figures, not the number of wallets created, active users or current merchants.

Why the experiment mattered
Naver’s distribution advantage
Embedding a wallet in a familiar payments app could reduce onboarding friction. Linking an existing Naver identity is simpler for some users than downloading a separate wallet, learning seed-phrase procedures and finding a compatible decentralized application.
Chiliz’s sports-fan strategy
Chiliz is built around sports and entertainment blockchain uses, including fan tokens and fan engagement. That gave Naver a concrete consumer proposition—collectibles, events and ticket-related experiences—rather than asking users to begin with speculative trading.

The adoption challenge
Large potential reach does not equal blockchain adoption. The important measures would be activated wallets, repeat event participation, collectible transfers, merchant use and sustained activity. None of those outcomes is established by the launch announcements.
What the launch did not mean
- It was not proof that Naver had become a cryptocurrency exchange.
- It did not show that 33 million people had wallets or immediate access to every feature.
- It did not establish that users automatically held CHZ or any fan token.
- It did not guarantee interoperability with outside wallets, applications or blockchains.
- It did not turn a promotional collectible into an investment product.
- It did not make the 2024 football-ticket promotion ongoing.
Current-status caution for readers in 2026
The documented evidence covers the 2024 beta and its planned roadmap. It does not verify whether Naver Pay Wallet is available today, which assets it supports, whether the formal launch occurred, what fees apply, or whether access remains limited to South Korea. Check the current Naver Pay app and official product notices before relying on any launch-era feature or signup path. For Chiliz background, consult the Chiliz 2025 white paper and Chiliz’s official site; these do not by themselves confirm Naver Wallet availability.
How to assess it before using it
- Confirm that NPay Wallet appears in the current Naver Pay app and that your location is eligible.
- Read which assets are actually supported; do not assume “Chiliz partner” means every Chiliz asset is available.
- Identify whether an item is an NFT, token, points balance or promotion, and whether transfers are allowed.
- Check transaction fees, withdrawal rules, recovery procedures and any applicable limits before depositing value.
- Treat fan tokens and other crypto-assets as risky and potentially volatile, not as ordinary Naver Pay points.
Bottom line
Naver Pay’s August 30, 2024 launch was a significant mainstream-distribution experiment: a South Korean, non-custodial beta wallet using Chiliz Chain to connect sports and entertainment fans with Web3 content. It was not evidence of a mature crypto exchange or a fully documented general-purpose wallet. The most accurate description is a content-led digital-asset pilot whose broader token, application, loyalty and multi-chain ambitions were still planned rather than proven.
