Deal status: expired. Valve’s 20% promotion cut the US price of the 256GB LCD Steam Deck from $399 to $319.20, but the offer ran only from September 2025 through October 6, 2025. It is not a current August 2026 sale. The promotion applied to the LCD model, not Steam Deck OLED, and Valve has since phased the LCD version out of its main range.
For context, Valve’s May 2026 pricing update listed the 512GB OLED at $789 and the 1TB OLED at $949. Regional prices and availability can differ, so treat those figures as US pricing snapshots rather than universal prices.
What the 2025 promotion actually offered
The arithmetic was straightforward: $399 × 0.8 = $319.20. Valve sold the discounted unit directly through Steam, rather than issuing a third-party coupon. UK coverage reported a reduction from £349 to £279.20. The promotion was announced around September 22–23, 2025, ahead of the Steam Autumn Sale, and ended on October 6, 2025. See Valve’s promotion announcement and the contemporaneous Tom’s Hardware report.
The sale price was for the 256GB LCD Steam Deck only. It did not discount the OLED models, and the old $319.20 figure should not appear beside a current purchase button.

What came in the 256GB LCD package
- 256GB NVMe SSD
- 7-inch, 1280×800 optically bonded LCD touchscreen
- Refresh rate up to 60Hz
- 7nm AMD APU
- Wi-Fi 5
- 40Wh battery
- Valve-estimated 2–8 hours of gameplay, depending on the content and settings
- 45W power supply with a 1.5-meter cable
- Carrying case and Steam profile bundle
- High-speed microSD expansion
Those specifications come from Valve’s Steam Deck product comparison. A nominal 256GB does not mean all 256GB is available for games: SteamOS and system data use part of the drive, and large modern installations can consume the remainder quickly.

Valve details the OLED differences on its Steam Deck OLED page. Both generations use the same broad Zen 2/RDNA 2 platform, so OLED is not a wholesale jump to a much faster gaming machine. Its meaningful advantages are the brighter, higher-contrast screen, longer battery estimate, newer wireless standard, improved thermals and audio refinements, and larger storage options. Game performance is broadly similar, although results vary by title and settings.
Why $319.20 was compelling at the time
At that price, the LCD Deck was the least expensive official new Steam Deck and a complete handheld PC rather than a stripped-down console. SteamOS provided a console-like interface, suspend and resume, desktop mode, trackpads, gyro controls and access to a large Steam library. The package already included the charger and case, leaving the discount available for games, a microSD card or a dock.
It was particularly sensible for indie games, older releases, 2D titles, emulation and other software that does not need a high-refresh HDR panel. Tom’s Hardware also highlighted the fit for travel, university use and homes where a full gaming desk is impractical. Every model supports microSD storage, allowing a budget buyer to start with the internal drive and expand later.

The compromises a buyer had to accept
256GB fills quickly
Several large AAA games can consume most of the internal space. A reputable UHS-I microSD card is a practical capacity upgrade, but it does not improve processing performance or provide OLED image quality.
Battery life is workload-dependent
Valve’s 2–8-hour figure is an estimate, not a guaranteed runtime. Brightness, wireless use, frame-rate limits, resolution, game engine and performance settings all affect it.
New releases may need compromises
Demanding PC games can require a lower graphics preset, 1280×800 or lower internal rendering, an upscaler such as FSR, a 30fps cap and reduced texture quality. “Steam Deck Verified” and “Playable” labels are useful starting points, but neither promises perfect controls, launcher behavior, anti-cheat support or performance in every situation.
The LCD screen is the visible downgrade
The LCD panel is limited to 60Hz and lacks the OLED model’s HDR contrast and larger 7.4-inch image. If you play for long sessions, the display and battery differences can matter more than small frame-rate variations.

What changed after the sale
The discount occurred during the LCD model’s final period of availability, although Valve did not publicly state that it was a clearance promotion. Valve’s later news page lists the OLED range at $789 for 512GB and $949 for 1TB after a May 27, 2026 price increase. Check the current Steam Deck news and pricing page for regional stock and changes. Older comparison pages may still show historical LCD information; that does not make $319.20 a live offer.

Choose a used or refurbished LCD Deck when price dominates
An LCD unit can still be a good budget purchase if its condition, warranty and price are substantially better than a new OLED. Before paying, check:
- Battery health and charging behavior
- Stick or trackpad drift
- Screen damage or dead pixels
- USB-C charging and external-display output
- Fan noise and SSD health
- Whether the original charger and case are included
- Return rights, seller reputation and remaining warranty
Do not assume that a listing is new, officially supported or priced at the former sale figure. Refurbished stock and availability vary by country.
Choose OLED for a new Valve purchase
OLED is the safer choice when you value display quality, longer battery life, Wi-Fi 6E, more internal storage and direct Valve support. The 512GB model is the more practical baseline for users who install several games; the 1TB model reduces storage management further. Confirm the live regional price before checkout.

- Faster storage

Consider a Windows handheld for different priorities
A Windows handheld may be preferable if you need higher frame rates in demanding AAA games or native access to Xbox Game Pass, Epic, Battle.net and other launchers without SteamOS workarounds. The trade-off is a less console-like interface and potentially more configuration.
Budgeting beyond the sticker price
Include storage and accessories in the total cost. A microSD card can solve capacity pressure, while a dock is optional for connecting a monitor, television or peripherals; the Deck works handheld without one. Third-party USB-C hubs may cost less, but power delivery, ports, compatibility and firmware support differ. Steam users should also account for the cost of games, while people whose libraries are mainly on PlayStation, Xbox or non-Steam launchers may spend more time configuring desktop mode or compatibility layers.
Bottom-line decision
The $319.20 256GB LCD Steam Deck was an excellent entry-level value during its September–October 2025 promotion, especially for indie and older PC games. It is not a current deal. In August 2026, compare any used or refurbished LCD unit’s condition, warranty and total cost with Valve’s OLED models: OLED costs more, but delivers the better screen, battery estimate, wireless connectivity and storage choices.
