Short answer: Apple’s partnership with Google to use Gemini technology in next-generation Apple Intelligence and Siri is confirmed. Bloomberg’s earlier report that Apple would pay about $1 billion a year for a customized, roughly 1.2-trillion-parameter Gemini model remains an unconfirmed commercial detail. Apple has disclosed neither the final price nor the contract’s technical terms.
What Bloomberg reported in November 2025
On November 5, 2025, Bloomberg reported that Apple was nearing an agreement to pay Google approximately $1 billion annually for a customized Gemini-based model intended to support a major Siri upgrade. The report described a model of roughly 1.2 trillion parameters and said it would be adapted for Apple’s infrastructure and privacy requirements. Bloomberg’s report attributed those details to people familiar with the negotiations.
Those specifics should still be treated as reported, not as publicly confirmed contract terms. Apple and Google have not disclosed:
- The final annual price or total contract value.
- Contract length, minimum usage commitments, revenue sharing or cloud charges.
- Whether Apple receives model weights or Google operates inference infrastructure.
- Whether the 1.2-trillion-parameter description applies to the production system.
- Ownership of any Apple-specific model derivatives or training data.
Parameter count alone also does not establish quality, speed, cost or privacy. A large model can be unsuitable for latency-sensitive assistant tasks, while smaller specialized models may handle on-device work more efficiently.

What Apple and Google later confirmed
In January 2026, contemporaneous coverage reported a multiyear Apple-Google AI collaboration. Apple’s June 8 announcement provided the clearest primary-source description: Apple said its next-generation Apple Foundation Models were “custom-built in collaboration with Google and its Gemini models.” Those models support Siri AI and other Apple Intelligence features. Apple’s announcement did not confirm Bloomberg’s $1 billion figure.
Apple’s wording is significant. It presents the result as Apple Foundation Models built with Google and Gemini technology, not as the consumer Gemini chatbot replacing Siri. The exact division of engineering, hosting and operations remains undisclosed.
How Gemini technology fits into Siri AI
Siri AI is a product and system layer, not simply a Google app. Apple describes an architecture combining:

- On-device Apple models for suitable requests.
- Apple Foundation Models for more demanding tasks.
- Private Cloud Compute for larger workloads.
- Apple’s system orchestrator, Spotlight index, App Intents and permission controls.
- Gemini-derived or Gemini-collaboratively developed model technology.
Apple’s developer documentation says its model-agnostic framework can work with Apple models, Gemini, Claude and other providers that conform to Apple’s Language Model protocol. That suggests Apple is building a platform capable of changing or combining model providers rather than making Siri identical to Gemini. Apple’s Apple Intelligence developer guide describes that framework.

What the new Siri is designed to do
Apple introduced Siri AI on June 8, 2026. Its announced capabilities include:
- Understanding personal context across messages, email, photos and other permitted data.
- Answering questions about content currently visible on the screen.
- Providing conversational answers using broad world knowledge and web information.
- Taking actions across apps through App Intents.
- Offering a dedicated Siri AI app for revisiting conversations.
- Working with Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence.
Apple’s examples include finding a restaurant recommendation sent by a friend, locating a hotel confirmation number in an old email and surfacing photographs from a trip. These demonstrations do not mean every request is handled directly by Google Gemini; routing can involve local models, Apple’s orchestration and cloud processing.

Privacy and Private Cloud Compute
Apple says requests are processed on-device whenever possible and that more demanding work can use Private Cloud Compute. Apple also says data handled by Private Cloud Compute is not stored or made accessible to Apple, and that outside experts can inspect aspects of the system. Apple’s Private Cloud Compute security post explains the stated design.
These are Apple’s privacy claims, not proof that no information ever leaves a device or that Google has no role in the processing chain. The public record does not specify every operational boundary between Apple, Google and any infrastructure used for model execution. Siri’s personal-context features also depend on Apple’s local indexes, permissions and app integrations, so a model’s fluency cannot by itself guarantee accurate or safe results.

Apple entered the generative-AI assistant race later than rivals and struggled to deliver the Siri capabilities it had previewed. Working with Google can give Apple access to larger foundation-model technology, additional inference capacity and a faster route to a credible assistant while Apple continues developing its own models and controls the user experience.
The arrangement also lets Apple separate the model layer from the product layer. Apple can own the interface, device integration, permissions and privacy architecture while using external or jointly developed models where they outperform its internal systems.

Why Google would agree
For Google, Apple offers enormous distribution and a prominent real-world role for Gemini. A successful deployment could increase Gemini’s relevance against OpenAI and other providers and may create model-licensing or infrastructure revenue. It could also deepen an existing Apple-Google relationship, although the AI arrangement should not be confused with their separate default-search business.
Those are strategic incentives, not disclosed financial terms. Apple controls the customer relationship and could eventually substitute its own models or another provider.
Risks and unanswered questions
Risks for Apple
- Dependence: A rival may become important to a core operating-system feature.
- Privacy complexity: Apple must reconcile external model technology with its privacy promises.
- Reliability: Siri must retrieve the right message, email or photo and execute actions safely, not merely generate fluent text.
- Cost: If Bloomberg’s estimate is accurate, a $1 billion recurring payment would be material before infrastructure and inference costs.
- Lock-in and regulation: A long-term arrangement could make switching providers harder and invite antitrust scrutiny.
- User confusion: Apple’s branding may obscure which components are Apple-developed, Google-derived or jointly developed.
Risks for Google
- Apple could replace Gemini with internal models or another supplier.
- Google could incur substantial compute and support costs.
- Antitrust scrutiny could intensify because Google already has a major search relationship with Apple.
- Apple owns the user experience, so Google may gain limited brand visibility.
- A weak Siri launch could reflect badly on Gemini even where Apple controls orchestration and product design.
What the deal means for investors
Investors should separate confirmed product strategy from an unverified price estimate. Key questions include whether Siri AI improves device upgrades and services engagement, whether Google receives model or cloud revenue, and whether Apple’s reliance on Google signals a lasting weakness in foundation-model development.
Apple and Google’s public filings and announcements do not establish that the approximately $1 billion figure appears in Apple or Google filings, nor whether it is a fixed fee, an estimate or a broader cost projection. It should not be presented as booked revenue or expense.
