Twilio’s CEO change happened on January 8, 2024—not in 2026. Co-founder Jeff Lawson stepped down as chief executive, board member and board chair. Khozema Shipchandler, then Twilio’s president of Communications, became CEO and joined the board, while Jeff Epstein became chair. Twilio’s filing described Lawson’s board resignation as unrelated to any disagreement with the company.
What happened on January 8, 2024?
Twilio announced that Lawson would leave all three of his corporate roles: CEO, director and board chair. The company used “stepped down” and resignation language rather than saying he was fired. The transition was effective immediately. Twilio’s announcement and its Form 8-K identify Shipchandler as his successor and Epstein as the new board chair.
That distinction matters for readers encountering the headline now: the relevant CEO departure was in January 2024. Twilio’s 2026 investor materials and filings continued to identify Shipchandler as CEO, including a July 2026 insider filing.
Who succeeded Lawson?
Shipchandler was an internal successor, not an outside turnaround hire. Before becoming CEO, he was president of Twilio Communications and had held operating and finance leadership positions at the company. Twilio presented that experience as a reason he could improve execution while moving Communications toward profitable growth.

He joined the board when he became CEO. The internal succession offered continuity for customers and employees, but it also put responsibility for fixing Twilio’s existing growth and profitability problems on an executive already familiar with them.
Layoffs and restructuring preceded the change
The CEO transition followed a period of repeated workforce reductions rather than one isolated layoff announcement.

- Twilio was reporting operating losses or insufficient profitability.
- The share price had fallen by more than 80% over the two years discussed in The Information’s contemporaneous report.
- Investors questioned capital allocation and whether Twilio’s structure was producing enough value.
- Activist investors pressed for strategic and leadership changes.
Legion Partners and Anson Funds were part of that activist backdrop. The Information reported that Anson welcomed the leadership change but argued that additional action was needed to maximize shareholder value. Those are investor positions, not a board finding that Lawson caused Twilio’s difficulties or that misconduct had occurred.
Was Lawson forced out?
The available official documents do not say that Lawson was fired. They say he stepped down or resigned. Twilio’s filing also said his resignation from the board was not the result of a disagreement with the company. Activist demands and critical reporting explain the pressure surrounding the decision, but they do not prove that the board forced him out.

What did Twilio say the new leadership would accomplish?
Twilio framed the change as part of a push for profitable growth and stronger operating discipline. The company highlighted:
- more disciplined capital allocation;
- greater focus and execution;
- review of underperforming areas; and
- continued efforts to improve Communications while growing Segment, Flex and Engage.
These statements describe management’s mandate and expectations. They are not, by themselves, evidence that the transition caused later financial improvement.

What did the change mean for customers and employees?
Customers
An internal successor reduced the immediate risk of a product or service reset, but the two-business-unit structure and efficiency drive could change investment priorities, sales coverage or support resources. Customers evaluating Twilio should rely on current service commitments, support terms, compliance documentation and product roadmaps rather than infer reliability from the CEO story alone.
Employees
Employees had already experienced multiple reductions before the succession. A profitability-focused mandate can bring tighter budgets and portfolio reviews, while also providing a clearer rationale for concentrating resources on businesses with stronger growth prospects. The public record does not establish the effect on morale or specific teams.
Where did Twilio stand in 2026?
Twilio’s later filings continued to list Shipchandler as CEO, so the January 2024 transition should not be mistaken for a new CEO departure in 2026. Twilio reported the following for the first quarter of 2026:

Those figures are company-reported results in Twilio’s Q1 2026 release. They indicate stronger reported operating results than the loss-and-growth concerns surrounding the 2024 change, but they cannot isolate how much, if any, of that improvement was caused by the CEO succession. Shipchandler’s continuing CEO title is also shown in a 2026 SEC certification and July 2026 Form 4.
How investors should interpret the headline
- It is historical: the event occurred January 8, 2024.
- It was a succession, not a documented dismissal: Lawson resigned and an internal executive succeeded him.
- Layoffs were context, not proven cause: Twilio had announced reductions in September 2022 and approximately 17% cuts in February 2023.
- Activist pressure was real but attributed: Anson Funds and other investors sought further strategic action; those views should not be presented as objective findings.
- Later improvement does not prove causation: Q1 2026 revenue, operating income and free cash flow provide a subsequent performance snapshot, not proof that the leadership change alone created a turnaround.
Bottom line
Twilio’s founder and CEO Jeff Lawson departed on January 8, 2024, after repeated layoffs, a two-unit restructuring and sustained investor dissatisfaction over growth, losses, valuation and strategy. Khozema Shipchandler took over from inside the company and remained CEO in 2026. The evidence supports viewing the move as both a leadership succession and part of a broader strategic reset—not as proof that layoffs alone forced Lawson out or that one executive change independently produced Twilio’s later results.
