The funding followed a $5.3 million seed round and will support an AI desktop assistant that listens to live conversations, reads screen context and supplies answers, notes and suggested follow-ups through an overlay designed to stay out of screen shares.
The investment is notable because Cluely began as a provocative “cheat on everything” product associated with hidden help in interviews and exams. Its current business pitch is broader—meeting assistance, sales coaching and enterprise workflows—but the “undetectable” feature still creates a sharp divide between private productivity support and undisclosed assistance where unaided performance is expected.
What Cluely raised, and what the valuation means
Cluely said a16z led its $15 million Series A announced on June 20, 2025. About two months earlier, the company announced a $5.3 million seed round co-led by Abstract Ventures and Susa Ventures. Adding those announced rounds produces $20.3 million in headline financing, although that is a simple sum rather than a separately reported total.
TechCrunch reported that two investors who were not involved in the Series A estimated a post-money valuation of about $120 million. a16z did not confirm that figure, so it should be treated as an outside estimate rather than an established company valuation: TechCrunch funding report.

What the product actually does
Cluely is primarily a computer-based meeting assistant, not an autonomous employee. It can process live meeting audio and transcription, use conversation and screen context, and provide real-time answers, suggested follow-ups, notes and next steps. The overlay is intended to remain absent from shared screens and recordings while the user sees it locally. Product material shows Cmd/Ctrl + Enter as a shortcut for assistance: Cluely homepage.
- It can support meetings, sales calls, interviews, brainstorming and related conversations.
- It does not need to join a call as a visible bot or additional participant.
- It does not currently take phone calls autonomously or perform arbitrary desktop actions such as clicking buttons or downloading files: Cluely limitations.
- Live outputs can be delayed, mis-transcribed, irrelevant or incorrect. Cluely’s own terms place responsibility for decisions made from those outputs on the customer: terms of service.
“Undetectable” is a narrow technical claim
Cluely’s language primarily concerns visibility to screen-sharing and meeting software. Its documentation describes an eye control in the command bar or Settings → Make Invisible. That is different from promising that use cannot be discovered.
What the feature is intended to hide
- The overlay is designed not to appear in shared screens or recordings.
- The assistant does not appear as a separate meeting participant.
What it does not hide
- The application still runs on the user’s device and may be exposed by local indicators, permissions, security tooling, process inspection or employer monitoring.
- Behavioral, identity, audio, camera, device and network checks can reveal assistance even when an overlay is absent.
- Cluely documents compatibility exceptions. As of its September 2025 note, invisibility did not work in some Windows 10 and Windows 11 Home configurations, on older Apple devices, in Microsoft Teams, or during full-screen sharing in Zoom and Google Meet: undetectability guide and Live Insights guide.
In practical terms, “undetectable” is a marketing and product-feature description for screen-share invisibility—not proof of universal, reliable or permissible cheating.

Why the funding was controversial
Founders Roy Lee and Neel Shanmugam developed Interview Coder, a tool intended to provide hidden assistance during technical interviews. Contemporary reporting said both were suspended from Columbia University in connection with that project: TechCrunch seed report. Later coverage also identifies Alex Chen as a co-founder; public descriptions of the founding team are not entirely uniform.
Cluely then built viral attention around the slogan “cheat on everything,” extending the idea to interviews, exams, sales calls and meetings. The central conflict is not simply that AI can answer questions. It is that the product can conceal assistance in settings deliberately designed to measure a person’s unaided knowledge, judgment or communication.
The same capability can have legitimate uses: a disclosed accessibility aid, live sales coaching, communication support or private note-taking. The deciding factors are the setting, consent and applicable rules—not the software’s ability to generate an answer.
Why a16z says it invested
a16z presents Cluely as an AI-powered desktop assistant for meetings, customer-support calls, brainstorming and collaborative work. Its investment announcement emphasizes live audio and screen context, discreet operation, rapid growth and the founders’ unconventional marketing strategy: a16z investment announcement.

That creates two distinct theses:
- Product thesis: people will pay for real-time contextual help in high-stakes professional conversations.
- Distribution thesis: provocative marketing can attract users quickly, then be converted into a broader enterprise product.
Neither thesis validates the company’s controversial use cases or every public growth claim.
From “cheat on everything” to enterprise software
Cluely’s public positioning has moved toward meeting notes, sales enablement, call coaching, knowledge-base retrieval and integrations. Its enterprise documentation describes team controls, CRM connections, custom privacy settings, onboarding and analytics: Cluely enterprise documentation.
The “undetectability” feature remains central to the consumer-facing offer, so the pivot is better understood as an expansion than a complete break. The company appears to be trying to turn attention generated by controversy into recurring business software. That can be commercially rational, but enterprise buyers will care about consent, security review, retention and governance more than viral reach.

See the live page at Cluely pricing. Enterprise sales are custom. Cluely’s documentation says certain public-company contracts start at $2.5 million per year and references enterprise seats, but those are company-published claims—not independently audited bookings or revenue.
What Cluely’s financial claims can—and cannot—prove
In July 2025, TechCrunch reported founder Roy Lee’s claim that annual recurring revenue had reached $7 million. In March 2026, Lee admitted publicly misstating Cluely’s revenue figures in the prior year. The earlier ARR figure should therefore not be repeated as verified company performance: TechCrunch’s March 2026 report.
For investors and financial readers, the lesson is straightforward: a financing round, a founder-reported ARR number, a valuation estimate and a company-published contract threshold are different kinds of evidence. They should not be combined into a single measure of traction.

Cluely’s privacy policy says it does not sell user data or train on user data, while also explaining that it collects account, payment, device and usage information and processes information supplied through its features. It says users may request end-to-end encryption: privacy policy.

“Not used for training” does not mean “not processed,” “not stored” or “not accessible.” Before deployment, a buyer should establish:
- Whether every participant has notice or consent for transcription and assistance.
- Whether employer, client, school, professional or regulatory rules permit the tool.
- Whether confidential, health, legal, financial or trade-secret information enters the service.
- Retention, deletion, encryption and administrator-access terms.
- Whether an enterprise contract and data-processing agreement provide required controls.
- How automatic renewal works under the then-current terms.
Where Cluely fits—and where it does not
Potentially useful situations
- Sales representatives handling objections in real time.
- Workers who want notes and follow-up suggestions.
- Accessibility or communication support where disclosure and policy allow it.
- Enterprise teams able to define consent, retention and security rules.
High-risk or poor-fit situations
- Technical interviews, exams and certifications that prohibit outside assistance.
- Confidential meetings without an approved data-processing arrangement.
- Organizations requiring visible recording notices or banning undisclosed AI.
- Users seeking reliable autonomous workflow execution rather than suggestions.
- Setups requiring universal invisibility across unsupported devices or full-screen modes.
Alternatives for transparent meeting assistance
These products are not interchangeable with hidden live coaching, but they may better fit organizations that prioritize disclosure and governance.
| Category | Examples | Typical fit |
|---|---|---|
| Transcription and searchable notes | Otter.ai, Fireflies.ai | Meeting records, summaries and integrations |
| Lightweight note workflow | Granola | Post-meeting organization without covert live coaching |
| Sales recording and follow-up | Fathom | Recorded calls, summaries and sales workflows |
| Native collaboration-suite assistant | Zoom AI Companion, Microsoft Teams Copilot | Centralized administration inside an existing workplace stack |
Current prices for these alternatives are not stated here; consult each vendor’s official site.
Bottom line for buyers and investors
Cluely’s investable idea is real-time, context-aware assistance delivered through a desktop overlay. Its $15 million Series A shows substantial investor interest, while its founder history, hidden-assistance marketing and later revenue correction justify unusually careful diligence. The product can be useful when assistance is authorized and disclosed. In interviews, exams or confidential work where unaided performance is required, a screen-share-hidden overlay can create more legal, academic, employment and reputational risk than financial value.
