Type One Energy has raised $87 million in a convertible-note financing, taking its reported venture funding above $160 million. The company was separately reported to be seeking a $250 million Series B at a proposed $900 million pre-money valuation. That Series B had not been established as closed in the available reporting, so it should not be described as completed.
The company is developing stellarator-based magnetic-confinement fusion and proposes to deploy its first commercial system at the former Bull Run fossil-fuel site in Tennessee. The financing is a significant step, but it does not yet prove that a commercial fusion plant is financed, licensed, built or operating.
What Type One Energy actually raised
TechCrunch reported on January 14, 2026 that Type One raised $87 million through a convertible note. A note is a financing instrument that generally converts into equity when a later qualifying round occurs. The available report does not disclose the note’s conversion discount, valuation cap, interest rate, maturity date, seniority or complete investor list.
That distinction matters. The $87 million was not a priced Series A or Series B equity round. It was capital raised ahead of a potential future financing, and the eventual ownership and pricing could depend on terms that have not been made public.

Earlier funding and known investors
The same report said an earlier seed financing grew from $29 million in 2023 to $82.5 million in 2024. Investors identified in connection with that earlier financing included Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Doral Energy-Tech Ventures and TDK Ventures. That list should not be treated as a confirmed complete roster for the $87 million note.
What is the status of the $250 million Series B?
Type One was reportedly in the process of raising a $250 million Series B at a $900 million pre-money valuation. “Being raised” is different from a financing that has closed or been publicly documented through definitive terms.

Accordingly, Type One should not be called a “fusion unicorn” on the basis of this report. The Series B could be delayed, repriced, reduced or abandoned, and the note’s conversion economics may differ from the reported target terms.
What “Bill Gates-backed” means
Bill Gates’ connection is through Breakthrough Energy Ventures’ electricity portfolio. Type One says on its company history page that it connected with Breakthrough Energy Ventures in 2023. The available evidence supports describing Type One as backed by Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures, not saying that Gates personally led or directly funded the $87 million note.

Type One’s stellarator technology
Type One is developing stellarator-based magnetic-confinement fusion. A stellarator uses complex, twisted magnetic fields to confine extremely hot plasma. Tokamaks, the other major magnetic-confinement design, generally depend more heavily on plasma current and use a simpler toroidal geometry.
Why a stellarator is attractive
- Its magnetic configuration is intended to support steady-state operation rather than relying on periodic plasma-current pulses.
- Fusion could provide dispatchable, high-energy-density electricity without combustion emissions during operation.
- Compared with conventional fission, fusion is expected to create a smaller burden of long-lived radioactive waste, although neutron activation and radioactive materials would still exist.
What remains unresolved
- Controlling and sustaining plasma at power-plant conditions.
- Materials damage from high-energy neutrons.
- Breeding, handling and recycling tritium fuel.
- Heat extraction, component replacement and remote maintenance.
- Plant availability, capacity factor, capital cost and supply-chain scale.
- Licensing, construction and utility financing for a first-of-a-kind facility.
Steady-state design is a technical objective, not evidence that a commercial stellarator has already generated grid power.
The Bull Run and Infinity projects
The proposed deployment is at TVA’s former Bull Run Fossil Plant in Anderson County, Tennessee, near Oak Ridge. TVA says the coal plant was decommissioned in December 2023 and describes fusion development there as an evaluation and development effort (TVA’s fusion overview).
Infinity One
Infinity One is described as a prototype and engineering-verification platform that would also support workforce training. TVA says it is intended to test design characteristics such as efficiency, reliability, maintenance and affordability. Type One’s current technology materials say commissioning and startup are scheduled for 2029.

Infinity Two
Infinity Two is the proposed commercial plant. Type One’s current technology page describes a design using deuterium-tritium fuel, approximately 800 MW of fusion power and 400 MWe delivered to the grid. Earlier TVA and Type One announcements described the project as a 350-MW plant and discussed potential baseload service as early as the mid-2030s.
Why the capacity is listed as 350 MW in some places and 400 MWe in others
The public figures are not reconciled. Use 350 MW when referring to the earlier TVA and project announcements, and 400 MWe when referring to Type One’s later technical description. The change may reflect an evolved design basis, a distinction between gross and net output, or different planning stages, but the cited pages do not say which explanation applies. The company and TVA should clarify the difference before the figures are used for grid or investment comparisons.
What TVA has—and has not—committed to
In September 2025, TVA issued a Letter of Intent covering potential deployment of Type One’s technology at Bull Run once it is commercially ready. The announcement says final decisions and definitive agreements on funding, construction and electricity purchases remain subject to TVA board approval, regulatory review and other planning processes. It is therefore not a final construction order, power-purchase agreement or proof that the project is fully financed.
Type One later said it submitted an initial licensing application for the Bull Run project (company licensing update). That is a meaningful project-development step, but licensing, financing and construction still have to progress.

Type One’s business model
Rather than owning and operating every reactor, Type One has told investors it intends to supply key technology to utilities and other power providers. Those partners would build, own and operate plants. Type One’s website describes the company as the technology provider and original equipment manufacturer for TVA’s Infinity Two project.
This model can reduce the capital Type One must commit to each plant, while shifting major execution requirements to customers and partners:
- Utility procurement and board approvals.
- Project finance and lender acceptance of first-of-a-kind risk.
- Licensing, permitting and construction management.
- Manufacturing, supply-chain and installation capability.
- Performance guarantees, warranties and long-term service arrangements.
The commercial test is therefore broader than whether the company can demonstrate fusion physics. Utilities must be willing to finance, license, construct, maintain and operate the complete system at a competitive cost and acceptable availability.

Type One has described additional activity in 2026, including the Bull Run licensing application, a UK Infinity Fusion Consortium with Tokamak Energy and AECOM, and a later Barclays support role focused on finance and infrastructure. The announcements are documented by Type One in its UK consortium release and Barclays announcement. These developments indicate project and partnership momentum; they do not establish that the $250 million Series B closed.
