Gold, silver and platinum fell together in 2026 because markets repriced interest rates, bond yields, the US dollar and crowded investor positions at the same time. Higher yields raise the opportunity cost of holding metals that pay no interest, a stronger dollar makes dollar-priced commodities more expensive for overseas buyers, and profit-taking amplified the move after exceptionally large rallies. War did not provide a simple offset because investors also treated the conflict as an inflation and interest-rate risk.
Why all three metals sold off together
The immediate driver was a macro and positioning unwind rather than one sudden collapse in physical demand. When traders expect higher policy rates or fewer rate cuts, government-bond yields and real yields tend to rise. Holding bullion then looks less attractive relative to interest-bearing assets. A firmer US dollar adds pressure because gold, silver and platinum are generally priced in dollars.
Momentum made the decline sharper. Trend-following funds, exchange-traded products, futures traders and other investors can reduce exposure together after a long rally. Profit-taking can therefore overwhelm supportive supply or demand statistics for weeks or months.
The World Gold Council groups gold’s major influences into four categories: economic expansion, risk and uncertainty, opportunity cost, and momentum. The same framework helps explain a cross-metal selloff, but each metal’s physical-demand mix determines how far and how long it falls.

- WALKING LIBERTY DESIGN: Inspired by the classic Walking Liberty half dollar, each round shows Liberty striding toward the sunrise with laurel and oak branches, and an eagle perched on a mountain crag on the reverse
- PURE .999 FINE COPPER: Each round is struck in 99.9% pure copper and weighs one avoirdupois ounce, about 28.35 grams; please note this is a standard avoirdupois ounce, which is lighter than the troy ounce used for silver and gold
- UNIFORM 39 MM SIZE: All 20 Walking Liberty rounds share the same 39 mm diameter and weight, so they stack evenly and fit standard 39 mm coin capsules and holders if you want to display individual pieces
- 20 ROUNDS IN A COIN TUBE: A full roll of 20 rounds, 20 ounces or 1.25 pounds of copper in total, ships in one stackable plastic coin tube that keeps the set together, protected and easy to count and store
- COLLECTIBLE GIFT IDEA: A thoughtful gift for coin collectors, copper stackers and fans of the Walking Liberty half dollar; also a weighty desk display piece; copper naturally tones over time, so handle rounds by the edges
What happened to each metal
Gold: a record rally met higher yields and heavy profit-taking
The World Gold Council reported a late-January 2026 high of US$5,405 per ounce, a June low of US$4,002 and a 7% year-to-date decline in its 1 July outlook. LBMA recorded a different benchmark high—$5,501.70 on 29 January—and a June close of $4,026.05. Those figures are not contradictory: benchmark timing and pricing conventions differ. On the LBMA series, the move from the January high to the June close was nearly 27%.
Gold also experienced more than 50% realised volatility during the first half of 2026, according to the World Gold Council. Its sensitivity to real yields, the dollar, central-bank activity and investment positioning made it the clearest expression of the macro reversal. Jewellery, technology and savings demand can benefit from economic expansion; geopolitical fear can increase hedging and diversification; falling yields or a weaker dollar reduce opportunity cost; and momentum can intensify both buying and selling.

Silver: monetary exposure plus industrial-cycle risk
LBMA reported silver down 21.47% in the second quarter of 2026, from $74.870 to $58.795. Silver can fall with gold when rates and the dollar move against precious metals, but it also behaves like an industrial input. Weaker growth expectations can therefore trigger selling from investors who would not sell gold for the same reason.
The Silver Institute still forecasts a sixth consecutive annual market deficit in 2026. It expects industrial fabrication to fall 2% to about 650 million ounces (Moz), largely because photovoltaic manufacturers are using less silver per unit and substituting other materials. Physical investment is forecast to rise 20% to 227 Moz. A deficit and stronger coin-and-bar demand can coexist with a falling price when financial flows and expectations dominate near-term trading.

Platinum: investment outflows changed the annual balance
Platinum has a more diverse physical market than gold, with important automotive, jewellery and industrial uses. The World Platinum Investment Council’s second-quarter 2026 update changed the full-year balance to a forecast 265,000-ounce (265 koz) surplus, driven mainly by investment outflows during the first half.
WPIC forecasts 2026 automotive demand down 4% and jewellery demand down 15%, partly offset by 5% industrial-demand growth. It projects above-ground stocks equal to only 3.4 months of global demand. That low stock cover limits the meaning of a one-year surplus: a modest surplus can refill inventories from a very depleted base, but it does not guarantee an immediate price recovery.

Why war did not protect precious metals
Conflict often supports gold, yet the 2026 Iran War also introduced a potential inflation shock. LBMA’s 2026 analysis says markets needed time to interpret that effect. If investors believe conflict will keep energy prices and inflation high, they may price fewer rate cuts or additional tightening. Yields and the dollar can then rise, increasing the opportunity cost of holding metals.
Geopolitical risk therefore was only one input. The World Gold Council attributes first-half gold performance to the interaction of geopolitical risk, investor positioning, profit-taking, risk sentiment, foreign exchange and momentum. A safe-haven bid can be overwhelmed when the same event raises expected inflation and interest rates.

How a deficit or low inventory can coexist with falling prices
Physical balances describe how much metal is produced and consumed over a period. Prices, especially in futures and exchange-traded markets, also reflect financing costs, currency moves, leverage, expectations and the willingness of investors to hold positions. Those financial variables can move faster than mine supply, recycling, fabrication or coin demand.
- Silver: a sixth straight forecast deficit does not prevent a selloff while industrial users thrift and leveraged investors liquidate.
- Platinum: a forecast 265 koz surplus can pressure prices even though projected stocks cover only 3.4 months of demand.
- Gold: central-bank purchases, jewellery demand and recycling may support longer-term liquidity without stopping a short-term positioning unwind.
What to compare when judging the next move
| Factor | Gold | Silver | Platinum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary macro exposure | Real and nominal yields, the dollar, central-bank behavior and investment flows | Gold-like monetary exposure plus sensitivity to industrial-growth expectations | Rates and positioning, with larger effects from automotive, jewellery and industrial cycles |
| 2026 demand evidence | World Gold Council reported a 7% year-to-date decline in its 1 July outlook after the first-half swing | Industrial fabrication forecast at about 650 Moz, down 2%; physical investment forecast at 227 Moz, up 20% | Automotive demand forecast down 4%, jewellery down 15%, industrial demand up 5% |
| Supply or inventory signal | Recycling and central-bank channels influence the balance; no single inventory figure establishes price direction | Sixth consecutive annual deficit forecast for 2026 | 265 koz surplus forecast, but only 3.4 months of above-ground stock cover |
| Documented 2026 move | LBMA: $5,501.70 on 29 January to $4,026.05 June close | LBMA: $74.870 to $58.795 in Q2, a 21.47% decline | WPIC’s cited update provides a balance forecast rather than a comparable period price change |
Use consistent benchmarks when comparing prices. LBMA morning and afternoon fixes, spot quotations, futures contracts and local-market prices are not interchangeable. Record the date, benchmark, currency and geography for every figure.
Should you buy bullion after the fall?
A lower quoted price is not, by itself, evidence that a metal has reached a bottom. Before buying physical bullion, define the role it plays in your finances and account for costs that are absent from headline spot prices.
- Choose the exposure: gold is the most direct monetary and safe-haven holding; silver adds industrial-cycle risk; platinum adds automotive, jewellery and industrial exposure.
- Check the quote: compare the dealer’s premium with the relevant spot or LBMA benchmark and note whether the price is per troy ounce, gram or local unit.
- Budget for friction: include dealer premiums, sales or value-added taxes where applicable, shipping, insurance, storage and any resale spread.
- Verify authenticity and liquidity: use established dealers, documented weights and fineness, and a realistic plan for selling or storing the metal.
- Avoid treating forecasts as targets: the Silver Institute and WPIC figures are forecasts, not guarantees, and macro conditions can change before physical balances do.
The practical question is not simply whether prices are “cheap.” It is whether the holding’s volatility, costs and demand drivers fit your time horizon and risk capacity.
